Hi!
I don't know what softwaree you are using, but you can use a surface deformation.
Be careful to have your letters with many subdivions and a clean geometry, or they will deform badly.

I'm a 3dsmax user, so I would
Create a sphere,
Create the Lettering using the Text tool in Max
Create an extrude on the splines of text and cap them
Line up the letter(s) on the sphere and voila
If any deformation needs to be done to the text to make it contour to the sphere's shape, add a FFD modifier to it, bend and align.

Hey there,
I got it. Using the SurfDeform modifier Monica mentioned above. Here is a list of instructions:
1. Create a sphere, then convert it to NURBS.
2. Create your text, then convert the text to an Editable Spline.
3. Under the segment sub-object of the editable spline, choose the 'refine' tool, from the right hand bar.
4. Go through your text, using this tool, and add many vertices along the edges where there are none, as well as other places that look a bit sparse.
5. When you're happy with the number of vertices, close the sub-object level and apply a 'SurfDeform' modifier to the editable spline. Click choose object, and select the NURBS sphere. You will probably need to rotate the text to get it where you want it. Also you can tweak the settings of the SurfDeform modifier to get some interesting results as well. When you're happy with the position, convert the editable spline into an editable poly.
6. Most probably, some of the faces will be facing the wrong way, and you won't be able to see them. Go into the polygon sub-object level, select the faces the are facing the wrong way, then choose 'flip' from the options in the right bar.
7. Select all the faces, and choose the 'extrude' option from the bar on the right. Make sure you choose the small square to the right of it to get the dialogue box. Make sure that 'by group' is checked. Adjust your extrude amount, and you're done.
8. Just align your text to sphere how you like.
I hope that makes sense.
Cheers :D
