Hi, I'm looking for an LCD tablet but someone suggested the possibility of drawing on a tablet laptop, so I'm keeping my options open.

I'd like
- more than 1024x768 resolution
- faster than a P4 2GHz
- good enough lpi, response time and pressure sensitivity that you can use them for illustration
- max $1800, might consider more if none are available that will do artist work.

Specs are hard to come by, especially about the tablet/pen function.

But more than that: I value a positive impression from working artists such as yourselves more than a spec number.

I will use it for inking up scanned sketches, stylizing digital illustrations, retouching photos. Expressive lines are a must and should "trace" well.

Has some of you artists bought one and are putting it to good use? :)

I'd say the wacom cintique would be a more useful tool, as it's made with artists in mind. Not to mention you will have a lot more screen real estate.
If you will actually use the mobility of a tablet PC (and be honest with yourself here), then i'd say it's worth springing for. There are a few users here who use tablet pc's and like them , hopefully we'll here from them soon in this thread.

It's mostly a look around if there are tablet laptops that get used for 'proper' art work. The reason is that Cintiqs are hard to come by here or on eBay. I don't really need the mobility for presenting work for customers or anything, but I'm noticing a bit of indoors fatigue. So I try to minimize the time necessary to sit still and getting "the screen tan". :P

I already use an ooold laptop to do my writing work outside of my work room, and idea work is also done in another room with a cup of coffee or tea.

So freedom is not bad, but it must cut it when it comes to art.

bardakos dropped me a PM about the Portege. Apparently it works great for Illustrator and ZBrush, and he recommends a RAM upgrade for things to run smoothly. Pen position reading works fine with no jitter near edges, although pressure sensitivity is not as good as the Intuos 3.

TBH, watching the promo for another one, the TC1100, really turned me off. It looked like they were using a 1/4" marker pen and what they wrote looked like sht.

Anybody use Painter or Art Rage on a tablet laptop with success?

You dissin’ my TC! Meet me at the park after school!

¾ eh…you talking about line thickness? My TC can go wayy finer than that, plus it has pressure sensitive by Wacom. What’s this demo you saw? I don’t mind checking it.

I just love my TC, even my friend who use cintique at work is looking for a TC. What’s cool about TC is that the keyboard is removable (slate), making it super flat…feels better on your wrist. The other type of tablets (convertible) is too thick, but of course you can get used to it. I just upgraded my HD to 7200 and installed Vista and it ran faster than when I ran XP. Plus Vista has a whole bunch of new Tablet options that made my Tablet experience more enjoyable.

A couple of issues with tablet are fast processor and good video card doesn’t seem to come hand in hand, slate has no internal disk drive, and the lack of easy access buttons for hotkeys while in pen mode. I’m seriously looking at Logitech NuLOOQ for my hotkeys problem.

I use Alais sketchBook for my drawing needs...It has very nice lines.

I’m sold on tablet and if my TC dies, I will first cry and get another Tablet. I would go for another TC, but HP stop making them.

I don't care about thin-ness or keyboard. The only thing a care about is drawing expressive lines in f.ex. Illustrator, Painter, or Art Rage.

Can't seem to snipe the youtube address but here's the ebay ad where I saw it (admin please remove the link if this is a violation of some rule):

Program they're using is called Journal. Its for note taking and converting your handwriting into editable text...I think all Tablet cames with the program.

TC wouldn't work for you cuz its only has 10.4 inch screen. I use it like a digital drawing pad that I carry with me everyday...And have additional function of doing light Maya and all them Internet stuff. Any heavier would be too much for me. Thickness issue: is like placing a drawing pad on a table: screen and keyboard (convertible: keyboard can't be removed) is like drawing on an encyclopedia and just the screen (slate) is like drawing on a magazine. Again it's self preference.

So even a Core Duo TC4400 with 12.1" screen (still 1024x768) would be a bad option for proper illustration in f.ex. Illustrator or Painter? Just for sketching?

It should work as long as you don't decide later get into 3D (heavy) work. At a profesional level, I would think you would need at least a 14 or even a 17 size monitor.

I just ordered a Tecra M7 from Toshiba

It has a 14" screen 1440x900 screen 1 gig ram (still room for another stick)
DEDICATED graphics card (this is part of the customizable tablet)---Normally I wouldn't buy from Toshiba but this is the only tablet PC I could find with a dedicated graphics card...

2D apps perform fine under this tablet PC
3D apps do to!
