Hi,

those birds are a little too big. That one on the roof is huge.. Scale them down a little bit.

all the best

Childplay exactky right...

Birds :) Bit large... You've got to keep them small... And one thing, you may review the background...

childplay and nitrocom,

Thanks for pointing the size of the birds out. I reduced the size and now am trying to change the image here. Patience.

I agree the birds are something great ...you need to improve a little the textures ...I like the idea but it tries to improve those details

Yes, it needs better compositing x10! :)

Thank you all for the comments in spite of their all being negative.

Other than the size of the birds and the halo around one of the r. side trees I really don't have a clue what the problem is that you are having with the compositing. I would appreciate any further comments to be more specific so they might be of use to me.

Also, I have corrected the above 2 problems but have no idea how to update the image. Whatever I try seems not to work.

Any suggestions?

I think you're on the right path, but it still needs a lot of work.

The house :
Windows don't open? Are they all picture windows? Make some double-hung, or sliders.
Gutters! Gotta have gutters!
A chimney would be nice, don't want your people to freeze!

The environment :
Discard the Photoshop trees and use Maya trees, at least. If you have it, might as well go all the way! Paint Effects to Polys work well in many cases, if lit properly. The photo trees will never look proper, since their lighting is totally different and their LOD (level of detail) really contrasts with the almost cartoon-like Maya render.

If you are using a new version of Maya, perhaps tweak mental ray a bit to create a softer, more realistic look. Final Gather works wonders, even by itself!

The birds, aside from being too large, seem to be Photoshopped in. They appear to have drop-shadows, as opposed to being actual geometry in Maya? I suggest either bringing the birds into Maya as objects or modeling some quick birds yourself! Small birds don't need a great level of detail, and shouldn't take you too long...

But don't let me discourage you! I'm just being critical, because there's a lot of progress to be made...

Jared,

thank you for the thorough response. It gave me a lot to think about. Unfortunately, although I have already made changes in the image I am not allowed to update images in the members gallery.

I must admit that I am not as bothered by a lot of the elements that have been critiqued as others, with a more purist philosophy are. My intent is not strict realism. In my method I would like to learn how to effectively mix all these different tools at my disposal with the primary intention not of strictly accurate precision in depiction but instead,in evoking a visual compliment to a written work that works for me, no matter how far it, like the written work, strays from the "real".

I'm not saying that I am currently successful in doing so or that this is an excuse for doing bad work but only that this is what I'm aiming for in these experiments. Just as some artists pay very little attention to the way things "really are", often for the purpose of disturbing the norm I think that somewhere in all of this I will eventually learn how to create evocative work that satisfies the creative as well as the perverse aspects of what I am trying to achieve.

Patience.

PS By the way, the reference photo of the actual house had no gutters or chimney visable which is why I didn't add them.

Thanks again,

Robert
