Here are some tests I've done:

I used Max and GI plug-ins, and Maya and Mental Ray Final Gather.

Can u tell which is which?

and Mental Ray with Final Gather and reflection.

Answer: 1. Max+VRay 2. Max+Brazil 3. Max+finalRender 4. Maya+Mental Ray

COOhoooooooolllllll :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

Nice renders boyjjjjjjjjj :D

how long did it took to render those images ?

and ofcourse the million dollar question.... what were your settings for Maya- mental ray ;)

I've been asking myself that question too actually......if Maya could imitate or stand out above Max's GI renders ... and you proved it could ... with no crap or mumbo jumbo.

P.S. i checked ur site and uhm....... you are good dude :)
you should do more with ur site , but i guess with your reference you have other things you can show off with :D

thats a cool comparison, thanks ed. Very nice model too btw. Interestingly, I like the max+vray render the best, but the MR one looks good too...

so how long did it take to render in each of the various setups??..which was the fastest...i'm guessing maya & mental ray

Mental Ray is a much better render.. It has also bean in developing for many many years.. The Max renders are pretty new.

Nice one.

Maybe you could throw in a standard maya render just for fun?

Here's a back view...the reason I'm posting this pix is to show how Mental Ray picks up subtle light and shadow even in the dark areas. The back side.

I'll post info regarding the time it took to render the images, and the settings for Mental Ray.

Thanks everyone for the interest.

OK, with regular Maya renderer. I still think with time and patience...one can get some rewarding results.

Please don't mind the odd stretching in the running image. I
still have to paint the weights correctly.

All in all, after using other apps I like Maya the best, and with
Mental Ray...it's complete - in my humble opinion. :scream:

Hi there,

I've been trying to render a really simple scene using Final Gather.
No lights in the scene at all, just a pale dome enclosing the sky above the object.

The results are reasonably close to what I want except for one major problem - I don't seem to get any shadows at all!?

I've tried using ray traced and depth map but they just never seem to appear. Also tried placing a lightsource to the side of the object and this lit it correctly, but still no shadows cast over rest of object or the ground.

Do you have any pointers such as settings I may have missed or could try tweaking. Ideally your settings for light and mental ray sued in these great images.

Thanks in advance,

Oli

These are my settings....I would say the key thing that peeps forget is the environment setting in Camera Attribute. Make sure
you play with value/setting of color as it will determine the "GI"ness of your render. I found this out through random tests.

I've added some color tint to the light...which isn't necessary for GI look...keep it white light and the environment setting will take care of it.

Hope this helps, holmes.

REALLY? I thought that the background color didn't make any difference to the lighting output of your final renders. Since it really doesn't exist when you save it as a .tga it gets an alpha.

Hmm.. ya learn something new everyday.

Well it only makes a difference to GI renders, not for normal rendering.

Thankyou very much for the settings.....i'll try them out later on

P.S. now that we have a shader sticky, why don't we have a lighting/rendering sticky :D posting settings for optimal results haha

so, rendertime? Will you post it? Id like to see a fullblown comparision between the renderers, such a test will be hard to make, but I think you would be able to make it pretty fair.

Some really nice renders.

Times would be interesting.

Camera angles etc aside, its also interesting how the different render interpretations of shaddows (even for small variations) implies different scales for the same model. - Just like lighting in the real world eh?

Might have to do my own 3d lighting in depth study with a focus on implied scale - when I find time - and if Ed doesn't beat me to it.

Great work Ed.

there is nothing like optimal settings (if there were they would have hard-coded them anyway) - all depends on scene scale, smallest visible detail, ...

to continue the dicussion from the mental-ray vs. prman thread this is the exact reason for the various settings you can/have to adjust to get an optimal result for the scene at hand

i double what beaker said - the make art button is a scary illusion

e.g. - leaving the max radius for FG at 0 means mental-ray tries to automatically adapt it's algorithm - in my experience this never really works - you have to tune it so you don't get any splotches or a washed out image

a sticky mental-ray thread is a good idea anyway - sharing insights and experiences will definitely serve everyone

Yeah, absolutely stunndman.

OK, I've been working on my portfolio...scanning and printing...and haven't had the time to do the time thing. I can barely remember which was the fastest and the slowest. I think the renders u see...both final Render and Vray were faster than Brazil and Mental Ray. But, I'll do exact timing in the coming weeks.
