Hi guys..im in...
This is the chamber, without the caps. I tried it with the caps, it looks too short. Maybe for this one, i try it without the cap.
U can see blue ticks on the lower left, which is the human scale compared to the 50km diameter of the chamber.
This has been done in a 3d package so it is the actual scale.
U can see the dividing seams on the chamber which has a distance of 30km between them.
Thanks!

Another shot at the concept. Im trying to catch the sense of scale in the chambers.
Here is the animated gif...i LOVE sharing the way i work with others. :)
http://img256.imageshack.us/img256/4866/02mb5.gif
The image should be self-explainatory, but i'll explain it anyway.
This is a view looking up to the cap of the chamber (Which chamber im not sure). Just to portray the sense of scale into it. Ive read somewhere, where the cap and the chamber wall met, sometimes there is an arc for those u wants to travel from chamber to chamber via land. And there is also the plasma tube, running through an opening on the cap. And some elevator tubes running on the cap, the angle is slightly slanted to cancel the spinning of the Stone.
Also there is VOTL flying to and fro between chambers near the plasme too.

Again, playing with scale and textures, the chamber cap might have that arc in a different location and ive read that the wall cap is 'near vertical, meaning the cap is thinner at the center than the perimeter. dam-like construction.

This is the chamber cap section. The connection between the transfer level and the rotating dock is unresolved.
Or i think, the rotating dock stops rotating and snaps to the elevator opening
to receive cargo. And the rotates again to
any approaching OTV.

Probably the view from the plasma tube looking down to the chamber floor. the dots at the center of the screen is the human scale. clouds casting shadows on the floor. Diameter of the dock is 100m. We are looking 25km down.

Here is a simple animation of the chamber mechanics.
http://nazirull.cgsociety.org/gallery/422323/ (http://nazirull.cgsociety.org/gallery/422323/)
This hopefully shows that the orientation or slant of the elevator shaft wont affect or cancel out any forces acting on it, coz the Stone revolve at around 7min, while it takes 10min tto get from the floor to the dock near the axis. That means while youre in that elevator going up to the dock, the Stone is going to make a little more than one revolution.

Im stopping at chapter six to reflect on what ive read so far, so much can be told on a composition. :)
Trail of dust left by the truck with Lanier and Patricia on it...moving passing control towers and fencing towards the twenty meter wide arch tunnel opening to chamber two, alexandria.
Each chamber has been blasted out, leaving many iron, nickle exposed, with widmanstatten pattern showing.
The floor of chamber one is sandy and dusty with patches of green, as they climd up from the valley to reach the tunnel.
The glow from the plasma tube is ever presence.
The dust takes time to settle as there is little wind in chamber one.

As you've used color to describe distance, I would like to see some glow from the plasma tube to give a 'destination' for the truck.
I think many of us are struggling with the scale of the chambers, whether as entrants or just readers. Your posts with the GoogleEarth images to get the sense of scale is a stroke of genius. Thanks for that!

“Humans built the Stone, Patricia. People from Earth.”
She stared at him, then tried to grin.
“Built it twelve hundred years ago. At least, it’s about twelve hundred years old.”
“Oh,” she said. ”Pull the other one.”
“No, I’m serious.”
This is the moment Lanier break the news to Patricia. The beginning of a mind-boggling puzzle for her...

How about rotating the tube right, to about 1 o'clock, or 2 o'clock? The whole picture has a right lean to it, quite nice, like a clockwise spiral. Except the light tube violates that. Otherwise, really great sketch!

I think cloud is my friend....i think its a useful tool to depict height. Im struggling to depict it without the help of clouds.
We automatically get the idea of height when cloud is inserted so im using it.
It can give a great and nice glow effects to the cloud by the plasma tube....like a linear, constructed lightning across the sky.

Nazirull - I can't believe I haven't posted in your thread yet. It's not that I haven't been watching it: I'm finding the work that your doing, the scale studies and the use of real photos to try to accurately portray the real dimensions in the Stone incredibly fascinating and inspiring. It's all been great work, and this latest cloud study is no exception.
to echoe what nwiz posted, I don't think the plasma tube should be that intense and hard-edged. Or more to the point, I don't think Greg Bear thinks so. In adib's thread he made one of his rare posts and commented "Tubelight might also be larger and more diffuse." I don't know about the larger in your case - adib's had been tighter, like a laser - but you may want to consider the more diffuse. After all, we know it's diffuse enough that you can fly a VTOL right upthrough and into it and not get blinded! :)
Anyhow, still looking forward to more of yuor posts. Keep exploring!

Just a random sketch...im a bit inspired by MarkyG's piece...thats what i had in mind all along (rrrrriiiiiiteee......).
Im trying to take the Stone as a character instead of a dead abandoned thing...and i want to dwell more into the political side of stuff.
Since i think the core (rite...ure talking with having finished only half of the book) of the story is the Death and how the nations are eager to get hold of the secrets....

This is inspired again by MarkyG's sketch. Curves dominated the place...I played around with the perpsective...u can see two horizons and a curve spanning above the viewer....and the plasma tube running across the vista...at the far back, the opposite side of the chamber...revealing the scale of the land...
Im stuck halfway thru the book..i might stop hereand develop wuteva i know about the story.

Tadaaa! No prize for guessing correctly which chamber is this!
With some help using MAX, i get the 25km radius and 30km length of thistledown chamber....the curves are of course from the book... overlayed some google aerials on the mesh to show scale...and overlayed zdepth too...
This one is pretty much faithful to Greg Bear's vision i think....need to have something in the foreground....hmmm...
Definitely some emotional conflict of interest between the expedition party.....Lanier, Takahashi, Patricia, Kimskaya....things like that...
Dunno yet how to do that....will see!

Well, it certainly makes a striking composition. 'Though to look across he chamber, given the gravity pull towards the sides, any people you put in there will have to be looking straight up: I fear that if you put Patricia there, we'll be looking right up her nostrils! :) But it may not need the people - it is a pretty impressive view on its own!

I have just posted my first previs for Thistledown (has not made it on the post yet) and without taking a look at what you have done already. This is great stuff. Many of the ideas you had struck me the same way! I even used some google maps to look for a good texture to rouph out the feel I was looking for! I guess great minds think alike :)
I'm very impressed by you ideas so far. I agree with the feeling you get with the Caps being placed in the chamber making the place chamber feel small. I've been struggling with that myself. I'm hoping to find an angle that works well to give an idea of how large the chambers are compaired to human scale.
Good luck and I look forward to seeing what how this progresses

Thanks mate! I think the book itself brings us all to one idea about a subject already. But then it still allows some unknown elements which means space for the imagination.
In this case, e.g. the curve of how the buildings are being hung on the cables....can be parallel or perpendicular to the caps....and of course the form of the buildings, architecture and stuff.

This is another one on Thistledown. I tried to put most of the elements mentioned in the inspiration section into a nice architectural composition.
I think as an advance city, Thistledown is a little more organized. And because of the presence of centrifugal force, its logical for the planning to be nicely patterned and laid.
I thought of the arches that spans up to 10 km to be close to the cap floor, and make up maybe for circulation around the city. There are few of these arranged in an axis from cap to cap.
These arches is connected vertically to the buildings that is hung from the cables. I think it is logical for the buildings to take up the shape of the cables, although the actual diameter of the real cable inside can be much2 smaller and consists of many.
At each end of the arches, a structure rose up to the very limit of the chambers atmosphere and in a shape of a golf tee...this is perhaps possible due to the rotation of the stone.
The peak of this structure can also be landing pads for crafts traveling along the plasma tube.
The foreground 'cable' u see is the middle one of three cables....it is situated in an axis.
The lower city is laid under the arches....all the plazas and beautiful pieces of architecture....
The actual feel of it might not be this dark as the dominant material is white, processed Stone material. This might add bright illumination around the chamber. As the book describes. Adding to the sleek feel of it is its interaction with metallic elements....
I hope i can pull this one of.
The composition might be the one for me.
Comments please!!

Inspired by Greg's clips in the Inspiration section, depth of atmosphere of beelow and MarkyG....
Im not really optimistic about this view, the soft shadow cast is not visible, and the chamber floor needs to be shown.
The cables are the buildings itself. Some will appear hung from it though, to be faithful to the book.
Thanks.

OK moving on...
Ive selected a wider shot of the whole thing. Upper left corner still empty, in case i wanna add anything later... I ve added a structure somewhere at the midground, of Nader Plaza. It won an architectural award in the Eon universe. So i thought it would be grand in scale.
The arches serves as circulation between the slopes...and as a support for the highways...the highways also get suspension from the cables when theres no long span arches.
There are lots of spaces to play with hanging building so stay tuned!

I realised that to show scale, usually the zoom is small....so u have a perception of size. I use 3d to generate the perspective....this chamber of mine has faithful size according to the book.
Its 25km radius and 30km length of the chamber floor.
The temple like structure is Naders Plaza.
The twin tower is a relative scale between Eon universe and ours. Something that i can relate to.
Cheers guys.

... it seems a little bit empty, by lacking human presence (and touch). After all, the asteroid is what Earth became, not some alien structure. Anyhow, if this is a beginning I like it a lot. It offers a great view, good studied angles and a lot of opportunities of defining and detailing the landscape. Good luck and see more of what you do really soon!

I would imagine that the buildings hung along the cables would be having the golf-tee shape as well.
I drew some patterns on the arched structure to add to the 'grace' Greg described on the book...i know its a chap way to do it but i try not to do it too much since i kinna like that idea. I can use it abit as the white stone and metal interaction.
Thanks

I like it! Having the golf-teebuildings up there by the cables makes them look like they are hanging, which in turn reminds me of the hanging chandelier buildings described in the book, also. The 2 towers on the right - i know they're just in there for scale, but what about turnign them into one golf tee building (and then sprinkling a few more around the lower city?) Anyhow, time to start refining it all, no?
Good luck!

A more refined lineart...i can say that im kinna happy with the composition.
Thanks Mike for the advice. I think your idea is great...i need some intermediate scale building somewhere in the midground as a link between big and small.
Yep...as u guys have guessed it....thats Takahashi and Patricia out from the truck from at some egde of the service road.
I know it looks kinna too high for a service road but i think the chamber is huge enough to fit more variety of structures than my composition can show.
Besides, Thistledown is where the architect has 'complete freedom'.

I’m very interested in how organic your hanging buildings are starting to look. I never pictured them like this, but it does add a different level. Makes me think of brain cells with nerve extension. Perhaps they did connect in this way, giving the buildings and residents better abilities to communicate. That has been one of the areas I’ve been struggling with, how would the people who live in the hanging buildings get around the chamber. If you figure the amount of volume available, a lot of people could easily have lived there, and as such would have needed to move around. I’ve not come up with a good answer yet.
Anyway, good job. Looking forward to more.

EdTheRenderman - Im intrigued by ur comment about it being organic. It is actually not intended to be that organic as in brain nerve cells though. Im trying to capture the the gracefulness that greg has said in his novel. Im struggling to come up with a unique if not different type of architecture to show this 'grace'.
Walrus earlier had mentioned that this hung building is similar to the ones in the second chamber, where the chamber is full with huge 4 kilometer high upsidedown chandeliers.
Its gonna be interesting to play around with this one.

An alternate composition. Im thinking to add some human element. Takahashi and Patricia will be on the foreground and Thistledown will be on the mid and back.
I hope to achieve a contrast of civilization, the difference between the foreground, the human element and the alien thistledown element.
I think as the guys in the society is flamboyant enough to wear skirts and shoeless, i think the architecture should go side by side.
Im to read back about the Geshen and the Naderites and how are they socially.

Looking good, Nazirull! I like the final layout that you've decided upon, and the nice warm/cool contrast between the blue environment and the falling troopers. I think the tee-shaped building on the right is a good idea, but the main body of it feels a bit out of perspective from the rest of the peice, like it's leaning a bit too much to the left.

Mike, Remko - Thanks for pointing out the leaning golf tee....I have changed the composition i think. Im putting it too, somewhere at upper left or upper right.

An update on the counterbalance. It doesnt only act as counterbalance to the building but as a foundation on which the building is erected.
I looks like a crane because (i made this one up) the cable provides the most efficient way to transport building material to the construction site.
Perhaps there is a construction dock at the chamber cap where the frame and all preliminaries is planned and built, then transported to the location via the cable. Like a ship dock.
Then on, the crane becomes a part of the building itself as the building is built.
This can make processed Stone material possible to be used for the building project and transported to the site.
I have to be careful not to put too much lights as Thistledown is not populated. Perhaps the military has occupy some areas and so there are lights on these location.
Thanks Slav for dropping by!

An update...i just thought that I'll be eternally flipping until the last day of submission.
Yeap....i think the building flow starts from the cable level...The cable (Again, i made this up) acts as an affective circulation tube, which has been there since the erection of the cables itself.
Its suitable for those who desire an alternative apart of the Plasma Tube.
There will be openings on the cables that will allow transporter to exit and land on the Arrival Level. Then decent down towards more exclusive areas.
There are Balconies for those who like some tubelights tan.
I have change the curvature of the building coz the previous one blocks too much of the view. With this new one, I think i have more opportunity to show more of the chamber floor. I think its more graceful too.
I hope to achieve better 'grace' in form , if i get what Greg means accurately.
Thanks!

Populating the chamber with hung buildings and some tee shape towers.
The thistledown flower shaped building i had earlier looks too gimicky so i think i skip that...
Adjusted the camera to have some grand balcony foreground to show scale.

Looking good! I really like your work on those color tests.
Compositionally, I really like the 3rd post back (#94) more than the more recent two. The landscape view really lets you take in more of the... well, landscape! It also shows off the curving perspective in the background better. In the most recent post, perhaps the camera depth is a bit too skewed: we're simultaneously looking up at the more rectilinear buildings and looking down at those circular buildings all in a very short space. For me, it makes the round buildings look titled towards the camera.
(If you do go with #94, though, you could still consider doing some tweaking with the layout. You've got the balcony 1/3 (or so) from the left side of the page. It might help balance the image more to have the large central hanging building closer to 1/3 of the way from the right side of the page... Anyhow, just an idea.)
Good luck with your composition. Hurry, though: You have less than 3 weeks to nail the composition and finish and submit the entire piece! (No pressure, though! :) )

Thanks for the commment, mike. I do wanted to leave that building 1/3 the the right. But I feel like showing more of the chamber floor and its stuff. Its not showing much at the viewport now though. Im planning to add it in PS. I agree though with the circles being strange...I admit that i was just randomly copying the thing around. Have to check that.
The human scale on the right is probably someone floating like what Takahashi and Patricia did in Olmy's apartment. I assume that they have use that somewhere else.
The balcony on the left is gonna be populated with Thistledowners and hopefully will bring the eye to the right towards the chamber floor (hopefully there will be something there).
Its kinna strange. I think its has come to me, men wearing kilt-like skirt, thistledown as a name (indeed is a britannia flower if im not mistaken?) and golf-tee shaped buildings, flamboyancy in colors and form (althought not so evident in my piece),
kinna have me thinking St.Andrews, where golf came from.....ok im sure it is just me.

crankbot - Thanks mate....i worked my a@@e off to get that angle...other people mightve done waaay better..
Leotril - Thanks man! Yup...the measurement is spot on as in the book. Not so creative of me i guess. Well the render time doesnt vary much. I set the units up at meters so the figure s wont be so overwhelming so i just do a cylinder of 25000m radius and 30000 deep. Other things like chamfering a line to show a single storey window, i just punch in the value of 1.75m which will give you a 3.5m band - generic single storey height.
Ive finished rendering the base...at 4000 pixel wide...it took me 14 hours....well faster pc can do it faster of course...its not the scene that cause that, i kept everypoly to a minimal as i can go. Its just my slow pc.
Thats the reason im doing the finishing in photoshop..the old fashion way...LOL

I use the Z depth pass and use it as a mask in PS on the curve, hue, and contrast layer.
I want to give it depth by the play of brightness, color and contrast so i hope it'll give enough depth and a feel of the scale.
The base also is set up in a midtonish color so its easy for me to use more saturated colors on other things like shiny metals and glowing things.
Thistledowners also rather flamboyant in terms of colors like lime green fabrics
and stainless steel teardrop seatings...i assume this is also applied on other things as well.
So i hope midtonish base will make these things pop out a bit..(how many times am i gonna say that?? duh)
Thanks!

Hey Nazirull, looking really good. I absolutely love the comp. Great depth to it. A suggestion would be to increase the depth in the image by fogging the far top right structures even more. At the moment the curving buildings in the background feel like they're all at the same depth. IE the bottom disc on the right has a similar amount of fog as the top right ones do. If you separate them out a bit it would help give it more depth. I'm only talking about a little bit. Just enough for depth separation. Whatchya think?
Cheers!

Some updates on colors and environmentals...I found that putting everything blue makes the piece looks flat and boring...adding RED will give some drama into it. LOL...(yeah i know its a cheap trick but hey im a noobie, please mind me)
Tried out the processed Stone material, which according to the book has a distinct pattern into it, called widmeinster or something, look it up at Google and found some royalty-free ones and paste it on.
The scene where Takahashi had a tour aournd Thistledown with Patricia reminded me to the barcode-like 'signboard' where u can just read them by pointing a laser pointer-like device.
I overlayed the viewport screenie over the render to give some quick perspective guide. If you look hard at the bottom, you can see rectangles showing 1.8m tall human scale.
Thanks!

Hi Nazirull, really like your compo there!
I like a bit less the red you've put in it.
Maybe some more darker colors couls be cool.In this way the light coming from above/upper right would get some more sense and your foreground will come out better I think.
Just suggestions ofcourse mate!
All the love and luck for you and all the ones you love in 2007!

Most significantly is the added foreground. I knew i had to put it soon or later.
The red sonja hsa gone...thanks OKMER for pointing that out fer me. :)

thats a fine piece, nazirull. the perspective is grand, the colours are spot on, and i love the light contrast for where the character is standing, just right!!...should be a real stunner when done. can't wait!!
best of luck, have a great start to 2007

Looking good, Nazirull! I think it looks better now that you've taken out all of the pink. The character on the right it really nicely sihouetted by the background. Not sure what (s)he's standing on, but the composition certainly adds focus to that area.
But speaking of focus, one thing that you may want to consider are the wheres and whys of where you're putting your msot saturated colors. With such an unsaturated palette throughout the entire piece, the eye can naturally get drawn to the contrasting areas of greatest saturation. In this case, I think they eye may automatically be lead to the flags on the left and the bar-code-traffic-signal in the center. This is great if that's exactly the areas that you want your viewer to be focusing on. But if not, you could consider desaturating these areas and concentrating the most intense colors on where you do want a viewer to look... maybe the new character you've added? Or the people falling from the sky from your earlier concept?
Anyhow, just a thought. Good luck with it, and have a Happy New Year!

hmmm, i like the clouds much! you do get a sense of vertigo. the colour however has taken a rapid decline since you showed us the character placement. That was near perfect, with the odd tonal value out...This light blue i do not think is working... it has lost that grand sense of scale that was achieved in the previous version
sorry mate, prolly not what you wished to hear.

The background is very solid and original.
I like also a lot the missiles streaks and the paratroopers coming down on the right, but I'm not totally convinced about the missiles on the left.
Maybe the character - Patricia, I guess, if you decide to confirm her presence - should confront the incoming disaster and stay completely isolated from smoke or fire. Imho it would give more balance to the image, that it's already beautiful without the addition of further elements in the scene...
Just my two cents. :)

Very cool! I've been away for a while and lost track of what was going on with your work!
I take it that you were contacted by Ballistic also sense you mentioned Expose 5. Are you worried about sending something to be published without getting full releases? When I read the Challenge instructions, I vertage about publishing for commerical use which worries me. I've sent an email to CGSociety to try to get a feel for this, but have not heard back yet. What is your take?
Again, great work!

Ed - Thanks for dropping by again n again! :)
Im not too worried abt that stuff....from what i understand the art belongs to me, as long as i attach together with its description, 'inspired by greg bear's Eon', I would come out ok......or would i?
Here is another take on the paratroopers....trying to clean out stuff...post-challenge thing..

I like the more defined Paratroopers in the foreground. Really helps the viewer understand what is happening, even if they haven't read the book!
Yah, you may want to take a look a the "Instructions" again. At the very bottom there is a statement that reads, "As a derivate work you can not use your work in any commercial manner without gaining written permission from Greg Bear." I worry about this clause even with everything else that is said about us owning the work. I don't have a problem asking for the permission, I just want to make sure that all bases are covered.
BTW - I'm still waiting for a response back from CGSociety on this. Would you have an Idea on how to send the questions to? I just sent it to their general question email.

Yeah i know that clause...i dont have prob asking permisssions....although i know that i own the work....its strange i know.
im gonna check that thread again later...
Thanks for dropping by...i hope i can show u more detail soon!
EDIT: Well, ive read the entire FAQ thread, most enquiries about the copyright thing went unanswered. I guess im just stuck. 50% of my art is mine and another 50% is Greg bear's. Even if the art doesnt give a closes hint of it being insipred by Eon, we entered the 'Eon challenge' and by entering mean we agreed to all the terms.
Like u said Ed, the first paragraph of the clause says one thing, and the next paragraph says the total opposite. That explains the participant figures in the challenge this time.
Its useless now. Just learn an important lesson.
Now how can i contact Greg?
Thaldir
02-13-2007, 07:59 AM
I wouldn't worry about submitting for Exposè.
We are allowed to use the Eon pieces for personal promotion, and *that* is what Exposè does.
BTW Ballistic Media has the rights of first print for the challenges' entries so giving them (through Ballistic Publishing) the right to accept or decline will 'free' the piece for other submissions, IMHO (similar publications, Spectrum or so).
Given that Ballistic was born from the CGSociety and the two cooperate closely I really can't see Ballistic proposing us to do something against the rules.
