View Full Version : Character : Cartoon Boy
Pentagramma 02-04-2003, 12:47 PM Hi,
This is one of the characters I´m making for a Janssen-Cilag video I´m working on right now. :wip:
It´s made using Maya sub-Ds, and the hair is Paint FX. It´s at very early stages, so critics are very welcome! :)

hey i like, don't have any real crits at the moment because as you say it's in the very early stages.
But i had created something like this and i was finished....i would be happy :)
i guess that means i like it.
don't know how the eyes will animate though, but i guess you have that all figured out
looking forward to updates

;) Nice! Good start.
The smile looks a little strange to me.
But I love your lighting: simple but great!

Very nice character, where's the body? ;). Is this SSS on his ear or just lightning?

Cute but I think you could smooth the chin.
Great work !

Thanks for the comments! I´m working on the little guy tonight, and will update real soon. :)
rollmops: I´m glad you liked the light! What you don´t like about the smile? The folds on the sides of the mouth? The lips themselves? All crits are welcome, I really want to make this character right... ;)
azazel: I´m using a translucence painted texture on the ears (plus a shader network with a few extra things) , and I believe it´ll be more noticeable when it´s ready. Also, I´m working on the body, and there´ll be an update with it ASAP.
Joebount: Thanks for the input , I´ll correct that!!
Kamul: Thanks a lot! I´m also glad you noticed the eyes - I´m using a shader network to simulate depth on them , but I´m on the testing stage right now (how deep they should be, how glossy, etc).

I like everything but the lack of eyelids....I would add eyelids and then it would be perfect....my 2 cents...

About the smile:
Smiling like him must be painfull after a while:D .
>"The folds on the sides of the mouth?"
Yes. Not natural enough I can't explain much more ( my english is too poor ).
Anyway it's just a personnal impression; so keep on working the way you feel it!

Hmmm @the smile i like it it looks somehow like mikey mouse
^_°i think it suits the modell really well espacially if it should express something comic lilke

Thanks everybody for the feedback - I´m working a lot on this, and there´ll be a major update in a few hours.
proton: I confess I was inclined to go on the regular way, and doing separated eyelids. But after your input, I´m creating working , skinned eyelids. I hope it works, and I´ll post an image soon. ;)
rollmops: I agree with you that the smile is so large right now. Sadly, I´m working with a pre-sketched design (in that one, the character is already smiling as a madman...) , so I´ll have to do a neutral pose later on (and that´s of course not the easy way to go). Hope you like that one! ;)
Kamul : Thanks a lot!

I think Seamless eyelids are the way to go....Let me know if you have any questions...I think this is turning out to be a great character model!

What can be said, the model's excellent :)
There is something I noticed with the hair though. At the forehead where it first comes out, it looks like the hair is too well . . . defined is the word I think. Perhaps the place where it is extruded should be blurred some?
BTW: Are you going to use the same effect you used for the hair on the eyebrows?
Pentagramma
02-06-2003, 12:34 PM
proton: Great help, thanks! I´ll study that carefully... :)
Temporal: You´re completely right. The base of the hair is too thin right now, I´ll work on that, too.
I´m still modelling the seamless eyelids - more work that I could believe, but it´ll be worthwhile. In the meantime, I´m sending an image of one of the sets. The textures aren´t ready yet (the granite is one of the worst...).

Hi there,
I have finally modeled the new eyelids. They´re working trough blendshape, and I haven´t added any extra movement on the face (like eyebrows), yet.
As usual, any comments are welcome! :wip:

This is the old model, before I started working on the eyelids. What do you guys think? Are the eyelids on the post above an improvement?
The model isn´t ready , of course, but any crits are welcome!:)
Temporal
02-07-2003, 12:22 PM
Yes, they are an improvement, but only slightly. When the eyes are open, they're barely visible. Perhaps you shouldn't make the sink for the eyeholes so deep? That might fix that
Kamul
02-07-2003, 12:50 PM
of course they are when the eyes are complete open it might seem unimpiortant bu u can make him seem more alive if u let him twinkle^^

Hi guys! Thanks for the comments.
I have been working on the eyes/eyelids area . Also, I did a face cleanup on the little guy (correcting weird polys, and rebuilding the muscle lines - specially the corners of the mouth)... Lots more to do ... :wip: :wip: :wip:

Hey looking really good,
i thought for a minute there he looked a bit stoned in the previous pic :) but now with all the expressions he is really coming to life.
dunno what he is doing on the bottom left though, maybe a bit of an elvis impression, a hu hu.....
great stuff though....

The second expression is verry good....keep up the good work

i think your facial expressions are excellent but i'm not keen on the eye brows. i think you could get a lot more character out of them. i'm not really sure how, maybe make them a bit thinner and pull them closer together so that they are incorporated more into the brow line when he raises or lowers the brow. excellent work tho:thumbsup:

Thanks guys!
TheFreak: I´m glad you liked the expressions - tonight I´ll work more on that (specially the forehead area). About the Elvis face - maybe I have been listening too much to the Lilo & Stitch soundtrack! :airguitar
Edouard: Thanks a lot! I´ll make more of those... :)
shoey: Totally agree! The eyebrows are really too small, and too apart . I´ll work on those.
Back to work... :wip:

Thanks for the feedback, guys - it´s helping me a lot!
squeeze: Thanks , man! I´m trying to reach a cartoon-quality at the poses and what the face can do, but the textures and the hair will be more lifelike (I hope!).
shoey: Thanks for the sugestion! I´ll make them a little more smooth. Also, I´ll make separated controls for the sides of each eyebrow - to achieve something like a S shape on them, in some of the poses.

An update...
The hair is Maya PaintFX, and there are no textures right now (I´ll do them next). Any crits/ sugestions? :wip:

good style, like the design... nice rendering (good SSS on the ears) but, I think the eyes shouldn't have those shadows or reflections on them, make them more abnoxiously white, like a real cartoon's eyes (just all white, no shading) because even cartoon eyes are all white even in the dark! :D
(last pic didnt show up) :hmm:
Pentagramma
02-18-2003, 01:20 PM
Gremlin: Thanks! No SSS on the character, just GI Joe (and there´ll be translucence painted textures, too).
I´m trying a mix between the cartoon look, and a realistic one - so, for example the eyes are more detailed (to help with the emotions), but the proportions are strange. ;)

if I may : I don't like his shoes...but it's hard to tell from this point of view...
but above all, I think his eyes are very very stretched...shouldn't they be much more round...even circular ?!?
and I don't like his trousers color (but that's personnal)
but it's very cool...his little hand is perfect and his hairs great !!!
pentagramma here's a present for you :

you have to watch it during 10 minuts !!!

Very nice Pentagramma :)
If you'd put that expression on his face before, I'd have said that it didn't really fit in the with the personailty of the character, but with the rest of the body complete I think it does.
There's very little to say a against it. The pose and everything is great, the hands are perfect like baby said.
The only thing I want to know is if you're going to use the same method you used on the hair to touch up the eyebrows. That's the only thing throwing me, everything thing else is excellent, like a more realistic Jimmy Neutron :D
I think his eyebrows could be much more lighter...it gives him a "taugh" look...
Pentagramma

baby: Thanks for the comments ! I`m working with an already approved design - the little fella eyes are really oval-shaped like that (even if I too would make them rounder if I could...), and his clothes colors are those (I would have loved to give him an aloha t-shirt, but it´s me!;) ). Anyway, hope you like the new expresions...
BTW, thanks for the link! Now I know how those japanese epileptic boys felt!
Temporal: Thanks! Glad you liked it... you´re not the first person to compare him with Jimmy Neutron. Maybe it´s that weird camera angle, that makes his head look almost as big as his body! :)
About the eyebrows, I´m not sure what to do with them. Maybe, some bump?
