After a stroll along all the Stone Rooms, I’ve received the green badge and I’ve been admitted to the breath-taking Seventh Room, with the Patricia Vasquez Team.
As a long time science fiction cover artist and Greg Bear’s fan, I couldn’t avert this mission! The environments where to unleash our creativity look like amazing…
...really happy to be here! :)

“Patricia sits down at a futuristic desktop inside the Third Chamber’s Library trying to unveil the mysteries of the Stone”.
My intention is to create an Art Movie Poster. In my opinion this could be realized in two different ways: if during the artistic path I come up with a striking idea – and we have quite a lot of time here – the final image could an impact momentum able to justify an aggressive single concept. On the other way, the beauty and complexity of the novel open so many environments and perspectives that we could end with a panoramic collage of characters/landscapes composed all around a strong lettering and main subject, just as it happens in the movie industry – see Star Wars and Co. My initial sketches and Concept Art will begin so to ‘narrate the story’, trying to touch strings of sense of wonder. Maybe some of them will become part of the mosaic showcased in the Poster, maybe not.
Yet I am not alone in the enterprise. I wish to work with the community as a Team. The mutual interaction will push me towards the ultimate solution.

Searching for a concept as a concept for a movie poster - splendid idea and this way we will hopefully see a lot of your beautiful paintings:) - I already like your vision of Patricia very well:thumbsup: !
I'm curious to discover more of your ideas...

Oh my, something else than the usual scifi cliche sceneries. This one definitely stands out from the masses.. Really nice interpretation of a character, has loads of personality going on in the picture.
Won't say anything about the suit until there's more than basic shapes drawn in - now it reminds me of Tron :)

Howdy, Maurizio! Good to see you in the Challenge too! I like the fact that you're focusing on the people (well, person) and not just the landscape. She's looking quite lovely so far, and I really like what you're starting to do with the surface fo the "desk" also. Can't wait to see more...!

Nwiz25: Isn’t it a commonplace that human beings convey in a meaningful glance the mysteries of the Universe? Thanks a lot for your comments and see you along the ride! I’ll work to stay on the right track! :)
MarkSnoswell: great to receive your feedback! I’m tasting several ideas coming down the pipeline directly from the left hemisphere of my brain – but I’m already feeling in love with the Patricia’s expression. It would be a great thing to pierce the library wall behind and let the light of the 7th Chamber enlighten the background in all its majesty. My internal cogs have registered the input... I’m moving in that direction, too…
Popol: Thanks! The marathon has begun!
daWinky: Time isn’t our enemy. Everything is still possible… if my clients will not to find me in the desert island where I’m hiding - studying incredible landscapes for this wonderful competition, I’ll drop new EON snapshots very soon!
spikey and OKMER: thanks, friends! I hadn’t thought about Tron for a long time! Yes, it seems so, but the effect is involuntary. The suit is dark and I sketched the outline with a light brush in order to identify the perimeters of the body. They will vanish as soon as I’ll be attacking the fabric! Thanks again for your words.
Nekomouse, anskrit, adib: thanks, you have recharged my batteries!
Walrus: welcome aboard my Chamber! I’ll stick almost certainly with the Patricia/desk concept, at least in the Foreground zone of the Poster. I look forward to your c&c.

Since the project is going to become an Art Movie Poster, I’ve been thinking how to include the lettering inside the illustration. You know, I’m going to pierce the wall behind Patricia to explore the seventh Chamber and I have to find a way to write down the title of the movie shaping it as a graphical element of the background. Three big monolithic letters…they could be high as a starship, massive as a mountain and occupy roughly the central part of the image.
“E O N”
EON is a highly photogenic word. The ‘O’ in the middle could be everything: an explosion, a planet, the ‘Stone’ asteroid itself. At first, I had thought to it as a human eye with a circular panoramic view of Chamber 7 replacing the iris. Then the best output becomes the simpler.
Here we have three progressive versions of the title. The first two could be the logo on the visit card of the producer, couldn’t they? In the third hypothesis the ‘O’ letter is the end wall of the 7th Chamber, whereas the plasma tube departs towards the Corridor.

A concept Art of the initial part of the 7th Chamber realized with Photoshop. If you are wondering what those lakes are and why a starship is flying upon the landscape, here are the replies:
- The territory should be barer and desolate (right, Greg?), but a similar imagine watched out of the novel contest wouldn’t be comprehensible without recognizable elements, and you could think: “What am I watching here? A new kind of washing machine?” I added clouds and lakes and a flying object to give a sense of immense space and terrains…hmmm…really hard to show a desert terraformed cylinder 50 km large…
- For the fussy ones, the starship is real and comes from Axis City, a million of kilometers down the Corridor. It was created reassembling and copying random parts of an F14 jet.

Real good. You closed the world here. I see the details will give a breathtaking view of the hugeness, otherwise it would look quite claustrophobic. Nice job!
See you!

Anatomista: thanks a lot for your comment! Yes, I think that here the field of vision could be a bit extended around the borders and the geographic details painted with more accuracy - roads, hills, rocks, copses, and so on. I'm just heating up the brushes here! Still in a phase of advanced sketches and experimentation... :)
I began as usual with a simple sketch, but my mind was focused on the Logo. ...probably at the end I'll turn the 7th Chamber 45 degrees around for a more perspective effect... even the impact of the "EON" letters, changed maybe in solid metal, should be stronger...
TheFirstAngel: Thanks! I'm taking off!

I've added a little white frame all around the picture slightly modifying position and consistence of the lettering. This is an example to show how it's possible to vary the balance of the image with just minor changements...

I like the watercolor look you're going for Manzieri. Nice expression on her as well. Perhaps you can seperate her from the background a little more. I'm not sure but maybe the ships placement is strange. Maybe if you reduced the contrast slightly on the ship and send it farther into the background therby keeping Patricia as the focus in the image. Keep up the cool work.
Manzieri
12-27-2006, 09:32 PM
nwiz25: the lettering issue should have been solved. What do you think? :)
RaresHalmagean: Yes! Your observation is correct and I've already tried several new positions for the ship. Reducing her size and plunging it in the atmosphere, it strenghtens the image as a whole. A quick watercolored background helps me always to see the final work in front of my eyes. Naturally when I keep filling the illustration with details, part of this effect vanishes... Thanks again for your great comments!

Coming to terms with the Patricia Jumpsuit. I let the lines on the sketch guide my instinct. The casual freehand signs become the trace for scales, metal textures, cogs, crampled leather. In this case the sketch itself is the reference for the drawings. While I put down details, everything is fruit of pure fantasy and the only attention concerns the overall harmony between the various components of the illustration...between light and shadow...

Glad to stay still running in the Bonus Temporal Zone.
I’m adding details in the backgroung before polishing
the overall composition. Still unsure about these points:
- to add or not to add fluorescent buttons/control panels
on the black desktop in front of Patricia?
- I’ve moved the starship to a less predominant position.
What about her size and place. Is it OK?
- I’ve not yet decided the quantity and weight of the lower type.
It’s better to leave just one line or erase it completely?
Canceling it will diminish the Movie Poster aroma?

Hi, Maurizio, good to see you're still finding a little time for the Challenge amongst your other work. Two things I thought might be helpful to point out:
Patricia's front arm looks inhumanly long, as though her elbow would almost hit hir hip if she were standing up straight. It could also be that her clavicle is thrust forewards, but there's no indication of that through the rest of the torso. It maybe something worth checking out, or at least double-checking against the photo-reference you used.
Also, it feels a though the spaceship might not quite be in the right perspective compared ot the rest of the piece. Or maybe it that it's listing over to the right side so that makes it look a bit off.
Anyhow, just some thoughts. Time's getting tight so who knows if you'll get a chance to do all the polishing that you need to, but good luck with it! :)

There's a wonderful poise to your Patricia, Maurizio - she looks....well, real is the best word I can think of. I would lose the 'cute' text (filmed in Thistledown etc) though, I think it takes away from your image, to be honest. Fantastic work otherwise.

Making trasure of all the preciuos community suggestions, I'm in for the final rush. In this sketch I've listed all the illustration points needing a choice or some revision:
- weight of the text
- character anatomy
- background
- position and size of the starship

OZ: Yes, it's a romantic approach... I agree!
PMD: thanks for your suggestion. I'm going to erase or minimize all the types, even as graphic elements mixed to the background. Thinking about it, I cannot pretend to add jokes or supposed writing on the canvas. This should be the task of the movie production house!
walrus: Yes, I DID use a photo reference, but it was all about the glance of a woman in an old fashion magazine and her hand under the chin. The face has got an obvious resemblance to my reference but all the rest is fruit of my mind. I'm going to fix her outline hoping not to morph my lady in an alien! Probably I'll post the photo reference just before the end of the Contest...:arteest:

I'm completing and polishing the canvas. I don't think I'll add anymore on the desk in front of Patricia. The EON title will be more evident on the black surface.
- Added a simple, central lower title
- Corrected the 'elongated arms' effect of the character
- Corrected reflections on the desk

Still running around the clock.
- Corrected tonality of the desk.
- Added details on the background.

looking good so far, maybe let the ellbows and the tableplate overcut slightly more to make the arms more obvious be on the desk.
bout the water, its a bit too blue i think since color of water usually is cause by reflection form this range, either give the environment more blue so its interacting with it or desaturate the blue slightly :) maybe smove out the boaders a bit, the edges are very hard. maybe show a bit of ground where its less deep. (islands, beachline)
maybe ingrease colorvariation where the landscape is nearer to the point of view, so you get a fall off towads the depht, hazewise desaturation in distance works well , maybe recuce war tones towards the distance so you have a nice colorfalloff to cyan/blueish/coldgrey and get for little work just a nice additional depht :)
hope those points help :) keep up the great work, rock on :)

- corrected overlapping of the elbows on the desk
- added details on the right side
- improved chromatic value of the river.
Not yet done. I mean to add details on the left side and maybe work a little bit still on the right.

Looking quite nice there Manzieri. Nice texture variation between patricia and the table. The background could use some more love I think. Maybe give us some more to look at in the landscape and clouds.

- canceled the white frame
- added some general details and shadows
- painted left side of the illustration
- added some clouds
Going to optimizing clouds, improving upper part and closing with the final retouches

- softened and improved Patricia's hairdressing
- increased the details on the far wall chamber
- added more haze on the landscape
No ship in this romantic snapshot. The novel will be represented by a landscape and a glance. Mankind longing for dreams and knowledge.
Last pass of details everywhere before delivering the Final Image.

DWquiff: Thanks a lot for your words. I tried something original and luckily all the lines in this drawing seem to be glad about their position... This week was hard between a flash flu, exacting clients and a million of other things...but I wasn't able to leave Patricia alone!
Away to drawing table...!:wip:

An illustration inspired to the EON novel by Greg Bear.
“The story of mankind can be read in the Patricia’s eyes. Earth is no more an option. In her future there are only the Stone and its marvels…and the greed to explore the unknown, yet…what about the structure of the Seventh Chamber? It defies human logic! A mix of sadness and sense-of-wonder lie in her heart...”
