I'm a fan of Greg Bear's books so I'm kinda excited about this challenge. I read this a few years ago and don't remember all the details. But I have a vivid image of the party traveling down the "tube". I'm going to do a shot focussed on the craft riding the central line and passing between two very different environments.

So I made a sketch of what I want the tube rider to look like. It's described as a jet engine like cylinger. The VTOL can dock with it. I grabbed some pics of a V22 Osprey for reference for the VTOL. There is going to be an observation deck and control room below the cylinder.

Started massing out the VTOL. It's a bit plain right now. I still want to keep it believable, pretty close to the osprey, but a little teched up and a little bigger. It's fun working on this kind of modern military type aircraft.

Just trying to block in how much of the image the tuberider/VTOL will take up. I want to focus on the people standing on the observation deck, but also draw the viwers eye down the tube.

Next I think I'll switch to doing some of the surface of the tube and add a light. It looks to boring right. Thanks for the feedback guys :)

Lookin cool, nice start. I like the concept work's coloring. Are you planning on bringing that over to 3d version?

Now I have the sections of the tube massed out. The ship is leaving a very industrial area and heading into a mountainous area with lakes, grass and clouds but I want to show the clean break from one area to another and to also show that the areas are constucts and not natural. I'm not sure how I'll model out the final area. The trees and such will be so small i won't need lots of detail. Getting the sense of space and atmosphere and lighting right is going to be a real challenge. But I'm starting to get excited about this. It'll get better :)

I like where you are headed with this but maybe you could scale out the tube more. It looks to me like your tunnel is smaller here than I had imagined. After all, this tunnel has multiple cities and forests and mountains that it is wide enough in diameter to contain. Your tunnel could look more "vast."

Wow!! Thats fantastic. It totally reminds me of the part in the book where they are riding the energy beam down the length of the tube. Your contrast in colors is really beautiful....the grey futurism of the city in the foreground against the luch greens of the mountainous landscape beyond. I looks like it would be great fun to walk around in that world. Although when reading the book I always saw a picture in my mind of there being 2 or 3 moons looming in the horizon. possibly even a giant sun. Looks like you might be the one to beat in this one.

Good Luck!!

This is very close to what I saw in my eye when I wrote EON--definitely a Boeing-Bell type design.
