View Full Version : cell render (i know, i know...)
rich novak 02-04-2003, 07:59 AM ok, this has probably been covered a billion times here, but i can't make sense out of all the threads on the subject...
looking to buy r8. big feature i need is a cell renderer. i don't want it to look like a 3d object with lines drawn on the parimeter... i need it to look like a real cartoon.
what's the best way to accomplish this in c4d? and more importantly, are there images to back it up?
i really appreciate all your help, folks. i'm trying to convince myself to start off with a package and stay with it for life. cinema might be the one.

I don't like to plug myself but... I put together a small bunch of presets called Sketch Cell (http://www.xenodesigns.com/forums/viewthread.php?tid=16) (finaly managed to get it so people could download it) that gives a more drawn look to something instead of just the standard outline. It's still quite outline like & far from perfect but it does give a more drawn look.
But an much better thing to look at is Kaiskai's shades of cell which inspired sketch cell. Unfortunatly without C4D it's hard to see how and what you can actualy do with it but the example pictures give you an idea and it's quite easy to tweak it to your liking.
Sorry but I can't give a link to it because I've no idea where it's hosted (it may still be somewhere on the bhodiNUT Forums (http://forum.bhodinut.com/) but they probably wont be up for very much longer :( )
Anyway, it is possible to give a more cartoony look to things but it takes some tweaking of materials to get the right effect and in some cases you don't even need to use the cell renderer to do it.
[Edit]
Try here (http://forum.bhodinut.com/viewtopic.php?t=331) for a look at it :)

I've seen the celrendering in 3dsmax and I must say...it really rocks..but it doesn't matter, I will stay in Cinema..hopefully someone will come with something similar someday:thumbsup:
I remember reading somewhere that kaiskai was working on a second version on the shades of cell..but I'm not sure. I'll keep hoping anyway..

Well.......just try the demo. The link is on their site :)
(I still don't know why this plugin would be better than just editing your render in PS though)
Maybe someone might be able to explain why this plugin is so nice (the results look great though)

the filters are animatable....hence you don't need to frame by frame it in photoshop...

Hi
I just saw your postings (not often answering to english postings, because my english is not so good).
Why we wrote pleasantville:
I often had renderings and did my videoposts in Photoshop or Paintshop, Frame to frame to frame..... No I am able to use the ACF-Files which I made (you can do more own of them by yourself, 45 I prepared for you at this moment) in Photoshop not only to render only one object in this touch without flickering - no, I am able to change between different Filters in one animation or from object to object. I am able to create my own edgemode or to use quant for another different comicstile. With masks I can project effects and textures to each object. I can mix effect in timeline or fade them out. I can blur single Objects and change the blur in timeline very soften from object to object.
I hope that our users get much inspiration to create their animations rendertouch/stile very individual with this tool ;o))
Full Version is coming on Monday, english tutorial comes tomorrow ( and it is not witten by me ;o)))
have fun and good ideas! Do-it!
