View Full Version : A script for rendering backwards?

Does anyone know of a script that could render the frames from the end frame to the begining? After a quick search ive found nothing.

This would be real nice for rendering on 2 different computers.

also, would this affect things like motion blur?

I don't understand why you would want to do this. The only way would be to change the render globals with the script, then set off a batch render for each frame - pretty slow. It wouldn't affect motion blur.

Just out of interest, have you tried setting the start frame to 100 and the end frame to 1?

If you want to render on two different computers, just set the "render by" to 2, or check render-every-other-frame or whatever it is in Maya.

Lots of times Id be rendering on 2 different computers of differing speeds. So im not sure how much faster one is than the other.

To me, it sounds easiest to have one start at the end of the shot, and one at the begining... and ill just stop it when it starts to overlap.

Any other suggestions for rendering on multiple computers? You guys make up a simple render log to keep track?

how about network rendering software like muster ? it will distribute the rendering in a way that all machines will have something to do all the time.

otherwise, just look how much faster the one machine is and calculate in advance which frames to be rendered on this machine and which on the other. simple math.

Doogie it's a dumb thing to do, but I do it all the time!

To render frames 1 to 100 backwards from the command line....

render -s 100 -e 1 -b -1 scenefile.mb

to have the best load balancing rendering on 2īs like mentioned by playme is really the best idea - and you dont have to manually stop one of the renderings and monitor them all the time.
if you have just 2 computers for rendering anyway i suggest downloading muster from virtial vertex (www.vvertex.com) as mentioned from svenip, since it is free for 2 render clients (at least was so in the past).. then you can do that from an interface and dont have to type all in the command line

cheers

Thanks all. I didn't realise muster was free for 2 clients =), but it's a lil different situation at school.

I would normally render in 2s but i dont always have the same speed machine. I wish the math really worked but during one test i did a 800Mhz tbird took 58secs and a 2Ghz P4 took 32secs. It doesnt seem to divide evenly w/ numbers all the time.

Thanks again for all your diverse suggestions. Ill probably end up using a combination when it comes to rendering out the rest at the end of my project.
