Tim-Gibson 10-13-2006, 07:17 AM Still very much a WIP, I'm just trying to learn how to paint, rather than sketch, in photoshop. Hell, I don't think I've ever done a painting that wasn't just a coloured in sketch...

Here's a close up of the rhino:

And a sketch of the lil' tyke:

Criticism and comments greatly appreciated :)

Thanks nachoyague, I'm going to have another pass at it tonight, does anyone have any other thoughts?
I'm thinking about putting an icy lake in the middle ground.

Something about the rhino in this composition leads my eye off of the page. I think it may be the color. If it were white/gray like the rest it might work better. I think you should add a flag in the empty middle space (perhaps as the focal point).
I look forward to updates. :)

Cheers LDiehl, I've split the difference :)

Any hints for painting water folks?

Sometimess you can find the most interesting things at YouTube.com. I went to see if they had anything on painting water...and this (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-2508985594511439222) came up from the Darrell Crow Studios. Maybe there are some techniques here you can try digitally.
Nice work.

Thanks for that Cris, I'll check it out after work and give it another pass. My water's a bit bland at the moment.
I'm probably going to remove the swas on the tower as well, now that I have the flag...

Update:

The buildings are now out of scale - I'll get onto that soon. The perspective in this image has never been what I intended, so I'm just giving it all a little shake up...
It could end up being quite a radical turning point.
Any ideas?

The painting itself is very nice. In fact, I don't know what I could say to help you improve it (Probably nothing =P). But I can't help wondering what is that rhino doing there? I mean, that's supposed to be at some part of Europe... maybe the Alps, or Eastern Europe, or even Russia... but there's no rhinos in any of those places... maybe it scaped from a near zoo? ... hehe So... (and I don't pretend to sound pedant here, I'm just curious) is there any reason for it to be a rhino and not an Ox or a Bison, or some other cold weather animal? I ask because it could be meant as a symbolic or even surrealist picture... and that would be just fine.
Again, it's a very cool piece, I really dig your snowscape. =)

Yeah, a rhino would have a little trouble in snow. No doubt about that.
The reasoning/backstory is still being ironed out in my head, but basically I'm doing a series of painting that are 'post human.' We managed to wipe ourselves out in the 40's leaving nature to reclaim the planet. The animals in each piece (located around the world) will all be mythical/unusual. For instance this rhino is my take on Durer's print here (http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Tim_Gibson/design_rhino1.jpg)
Another painting may have a Pegasus in a derelict British theatre for instance.
Thanks for the interest :)
