Little idea using a fisheye lens look.... This is the part when Patricia is shown chamber 7. She climbs up the ladder on the truck to see if she can see the end.

Ok i am thinking on focusing on a vehicle in Eon. Many artists seems to be going landscape or charater design. The vehicle which is described in Chamber 1. Looking like a large Snowcat with 6 rubber tyres, steel banded instead of tread, spoked wheels. Rugged looking and electric powered. This is my first draft.

This is my second and third draft, The design i am going for is a component vehicle, lightweight being assembled from cargo containers bought from earths orbital spacestations. I want the look of a Joint NATO-Eurospace and NASA funded and built. Seeing they control all activities on the stone.

Hehe. Looks like this scene is popular with a lot of us CGTalkers. :D

I really like the design for the vehicle. Very NASA inspired. If you are planning on concentrating on the vehicle, perhaps you should move into the 3D Scene category. There's around four of us, including myself, that also have vehicles in our scenes.

Looking forward to see how this turns out. Again, really cool design!

Thanks for checking out my thread.

In response to your question regarding the vehicle's ability to spin:

I don't have the book anymore. I grabbed it from the library and it had to be returned. Sorry. However, I do remember that the book wasn't very specific as to how the spinning worked. It only mentioned that the vehicle was capable of spinning around it's center axis. So, my design isn't the only option. You can always have the vehicle turn at both the front and rear...you know, front and rear steering. This way it would still be able to spin around a full 360 degrees. I hope this helps. :)

As far as I can see, your current design can remain the same and still retain this ability.

Hi there again, Cheers for the response. That helps alot, I am going to go with the all wheel steering which would make for a tight 180 degree turn...sweet :-)

Ok .. I found out that this vehicle can do do a 180 on its axis. So this is the revision on my initial concept. I based it on the Mars rover. The middle set of wheels track slightly set in to the front and back wheels. Also is the main drive axles. The outer wheels have seperate electric motors to help in uneven terrain and can turn 360 degrees if needed. I am very happy with the idea now :-)

I like your truck a lot. It looks interesting and efficient and I can totally believe it coming out of a space venture. Like Jedi-Juice I'm glad you chose to do the truck in 3D. This illustration category has a few entries using 3D as just another tool for generating elements of the scene. Excellent choice of scene to illustrate too. No crits from me. I'm looking forward to seeing you take this to the next stage

Thanx Terro, I have left the cab a little plain i know....i will be adding alot more detail when i do my over-draw. I have made the concepts simple and modular.....because the vehicle is bought to the stone by shuttle. So i imagined it would be assembled on arrival and would be made of lightweight materials ( Materials include aluminum, plastics, magnesium, carbon fiber, and metal matrix composites. ) The vehicle is also electric powered....might run on water ??Hydrogen??

I like the layout and the colors you have working here so far, Mark. Are you going to do the characters in 3D too?
The one thing I'd bring up is that the chamber itself doesn't quite look large enough yet. It's 50km in diameter, which is really, really large! Bear describes looking out over entire cities and it looks like they're on a flat plane until you look out and see the walls crawling upwards. Here it looks like the 20 yards around you at most is on a flat plane. You may want to keep expanding your cylinder and see how it looks. Good luck!

Hi Mark,

great to see a scene around your vehicle now and your effort of making it bigger was very effective, it's coming along really impressive:thumbsup: ! Looking forward to see the next steps!

It's really doing my head in and I love it! The foreground ground texture extending into the distance is especially beautiful and the truck fits in superbly into the scene. You're capturing the scale of the corridor too - something which is easier said than done. The only thing I might recommend is the vanishing point being hidden behind some haze - because the corridor goes on forever the vanishing point would not be visible as a clear dot. But hey I know this is still a WIP. Brilliant update.

Oh my god!
You managed to get an WOW out of me! My Friend heard it from another room and came to see if I am going craze talking to myself. And here is another WOW from him!

Are you considering putting something on the extreme closeup, like a plant, or somebodies shoulder? Just to maximize the impact of the perspective.

Great work Mark!

hey buddy! Looks awesome, I love the way u painted that tube. My only concern would be that the format of the image is a bit stiff... I would widen it for a better action feeling that the blaze is also giving it. keep up the good work!

@LightSovereign, daWinky, mdavid, musi, Terro

Thanx so much for you kind words, i am greatful for your response. I will be looking at vanishing points and foreground elements. I hope might next update will be soon :)

@NinjaA55N

Thanx dude, I might have to get u to explain more. I was unaware the scene I am portraying has action...lol. Which part has the blaze? :) or do you mean the plasma tube?

Cheers

huh, sorry man :) I meant the tube ofcors (that shiny blue line). And I didnt think action as motion action... but diagonal lines and the depth of the image make it very dynamic. Thats what I had in mind. Sorry once again for not expressing myself more clearly.

Hi Mark,

The background had an amazing update man!..the inside surface of the cylinder starts to look interesting!
Im just not sure what are those two posts in the ground and why it shapes exactly the same as the one on top of the vehicle?..just asking :)..Cheers:thumbsup:..

Hello all, This should stop the confusion of the pillor placeholders for my Characters. Patricia seeing the 7th chamber for the first time on the roof of the truck. Wu and Chang are watching her reaction. Lanier would still be in the truck at this moment. :-)

Cool. I like how you portrayed the beam, quite glaring. And the characters are nicely drawn. I think the composition would be a little more interesting with one of the characters closer to the foreground. And you probably already thought of this, but the clouds could use some touching up. They're looking a little like bath bubbles.

This is spot on how I pictured this scene when I read the book.
Cool vehicle aswell.

Hi Mark, really, really cool.

One thing I'd crit is the bounce light under the vehicle. I'd darken areas down a bit to ground it to the surface. Mainly around the bottom half of the wheels and undercarriage.

Fantastic image!

Wow, that is looking really good. I think that vehicle is great! I do agree that it would be cool to pull one or more of the figures closer into the foreground.

Keep it up!

Hi Mark, whooo really great feeling indeed, just like Ninja, a bit claustrophobic feeling.
Great!
Love the truck also!
Maybe opening up a bit the canvs to the right to bring in some rocks or other elements in the foreground could be cool.
I wish you all the luck and a very cerry mishmas!!!

Yea looks better with the guy pulled forward. And I like that you thickened the atmosphere a little. But now you seem to have some unused space to the right. I'm guessing now you could either crop, move the guy to the right, or add someone or something in that space.

i especially like the characters and the truck, but i think you can [push the back ground a bit futher. :)

ChuckWadey
12-22-2006, 10:10 PM
I'd try add some more land gradually sloping up on the left side of the truck - just because the curviture seems a little abrupt right now, almost like a 90 degree wall.

Otherwise quite awseome.

Have you thought about making the format a little wider? 16x9 will give you more "epicness!"

Keep going man.

Hi there and I have plenty to do still on the background...i keep pushing and pulling.

Hallo!

Like where you're going with this :).
If I may make a small suggestion, I don't really see the curve the chamber is supposed to have on the left side (our left), there it reads more like a vertical wall to me...

musi
12-23-2006, 09:32 AM
Hej Mark,

Yep, that's what I was talking about - your characters on closeup add a big deal to your composition! Great work!

I agree with Thaldir - just noticed that too. It also looks like a flat ground plane covered with a laying cylinder. May be add a tiny bit of curvature to the ground plane? I am not sure it's gona work, but I wish to see how it will look with it...

Hi guys and Gals,

Thanx for all ur comments, I am finally on the last stage. I just need to clean up my outlines and clean a few areas up. I see a few of you want more curve, thats how i started out and was suggested to get rid of the obvious curve. The desciption if i remember correctly.....is the land looks flat and the landscape looks as if to creep up like walls. This makes the chamber look huge.

Cheers to all

Ok this is my final image based on the moment that Patrica first sees Chamber 7 and climbs the vehicle to see how far the chamber stretches. I have done my piece in concept form and not as a photrealistic image. I designed the vehicle based on the description in the book and made changes to it's steering configuration which was suggested by another challenger...thankyou. Progams i used was mainly Photoshop but I did do a 3d render of the vehicle in 3D max. Thanx for all the support from my fellow CGTalk members.

Not so bad, too much work though, thanks, and you?
Congrats to you finishing the challenge. It was tough as usual, though there're not so many serious entries as in the past, afaik. Somehow I can't get the thought out of my mind that your devotion to the challenge has decreased and that you were more playing around and trying new things. Well that may disapoint long time observers like me but I always thought and still think that that's what this is all about :scream: and I'm always very glad to see new aproaches from artists I know. You've done well and I wish you good luck with the judges and hope that there'll be a next time and that I'll support and rival you more :) It's really a shame that I discovered your entry so late...
