I was watching the Gnomon digital sets DVD by Eric Hanson and he showed off this really nice displacement map that made a plane look like one of those tall European houses you see in the old cities.

Does anyone know how that was made or how to make stuff like that?

One way is to use a program like z-brush that lets you interactively paint displacement.

Another way would be to model the facade of the house, then assign a surface shader with a black to white ramp projected from the side, so that the closer parts are shaded brighter and the parts farther back are shaded darker, render in an orthagonal view, and use what you render as the displacement map.
