Have you tried using the ipr render and had spots on it without raytraceing? That is how I have done in my 3 years. That way it usually turns out good okay

yes, i have tried that, and no doubt, you get a good look, but it doesnt look anything like this. this has to be raytrace, or, HDRI or something...i just wonder, how do i duplicate it in maya?

just use a gray lambert material with an area light and tweak the shadow parameters a little for softer shadows.
You will get similar results

That can't have raytrace I know it because you would see the light stream in the backround against the black normally. I have made some models on maya and made them look similar with that method i will get some tomorrow i have most of my work at school

A really quick and easy way of getting a render to look like that, is by using the GI Joe plugin from Pixho.
It fakes GI by creating a lot of lights
Very good plugin, and easy to use.
get it:thumbsup:

Mental Ray perhaps... maybe the shader and adjusted lighting parameters including shadows

this looks alot like Brazil's (3ds max renderer) Skylight feature. I figured Mental Ray's final gathering features could produce effects like this (using a key light as well of course). Worth a stab anyways :)

OK, these images were done using Mental Ray with Final Gather. I've attached some examples.

Only thing...it's got some "radiosity" thing going on..so, it's not a fair comparison to the image you've attached, which was done using Brazil I believe as a straight Global Illum. No reflected lights in it.

To install GI Joe, go to the Pixho site.
In there there's a page showing how to install it.
Basically, just copy the script and the 'lights' file into your Maya scripts folder.
Copy the icon into icons folder.
Once that's done, open Maya, open the Script Editor, and go File - Source Script.
Go to the scripts folder, and select the GI Joe mel script.
Then go again in the Script Editor, File - Open.
Again select the GI Joe script.
It should load it into the bottom window of the script editor.
Highlight the whole script in the window, and press Enter.
That should load GI Joe.
Now to drag the script onto your shelf:
Once you excecute the script, in the top window of the Editor this should appear : 'GI_Joe;'
Highlight that and middle mouse drag in onto you shelf.
Then just select the right icon from the Shelf Editor to make it look nice.
When you excecute the script, a window should appear asking you how many lights you want.

When you see that, you know your set.

Hope this helps.

I would recommend looking at the doc on the actual site.

Yeah just use Final Gathering in Mental Ray, it'd take about 2 minutes to set up.
