For slow render times:
Add a small rectangular area light (3 x 2 cm or so) slightly above and slightly to the side of the camera. Left or right side doesn't really matter. The flash cube is not located at the same place on all cameras. On most compact digital cameras, it's to the right of the lens (when looking through the lens, that is). If you want to simulate an external flash, make the area light bigger and position it more directly above the camera.
Oh, and you might want to make the light a child of the camera, so that when you move the camera, the light moves with it.
Make the light's color neutral, and give it an inverse square falloff.
For fast render times:
Replace the area light with a point light.
For really fast render times:
Turn off shadows for the point light.
