Here is a little render I did to experiment with Maya's powerful fur plug in. There was some touch up work done in photoshop, adding the little spiky things on the spiders legs, other than that all modeling was done in wings. Rendered with mental ray.

SPIDER ... one of my favorite creatures :D
looks so nice ... I just didn't like the black fur in it's leg ... but maybe i'm wrong :shrug:

Agreed. In doing research, I was able to get a hold of a actual wolf spider from the city's natural history museum (it was dead of course). They actually do have crazy thick black hairs sticking off there bodies, that act like nettles. They really are creepy looking up close....

It must be very hard to finish a work like this :) Even studying on it with my eyes is a hard thing to keep on :)
