Mirsky sinking at the hatch

Hi this is my first time in a CG challenge.
I am very new to the society but since this July I have learned so much and gotten greatly inspired.
My goal is to finish this challenge, to learn on the way and to make friends! I have not decided wether to do a 3D or 2D yet... maybe a combination.

Haven't read the book... just got it yesterday but I am an extreeeemly slow reader so I don't think I'll be able to read the whole thing.

Well, it's truely nice to be a part of this society and this challenge

Interesting ~ Terrific concept art!

Hey, you did it already.:)
This is one of the scenes i was planning to do myself (hm, thinking it over we will hear this statement quite often in this challenge i guess hehe)
You did quite a good job already. Wasnīt he more struggling because the hatch didnīt work proper and he was ordered to fix that?
Anyway, good concept.

Looks cold man, real cold and lonely down there.
Good stuff, keep it up. :applause:

nwiz25: Thanks. It's from the second chapter of the book. the guy is in a training pool.

yanbing: Thanks...

artvandeley: hehe, did it already! :D I wanted to "patent" an early thought. Yet I am sure many people are gonna be making different versions of the same scenes in the book. That's one of the limitations in this particular challange. And you are right that he was order to hang in there and open the hatch. After he's opened it he grabs onto the rim and the divers or other trainees pull him up.
I changed it around abit to make it more dramatic (besides the challange is "inspired" by the book). So here he has opened the hatch but didn't hook up so he began to sink. It may even be a flash-thought he got in his mind when he realised how there was noone there to carry him up to the surface if he began to drown. BAM! PANIC! "General I'm drowning!!!"
I'm still playing around with this... who knows. I may not even do this in the end.

Squishme: That how I have pictured the tank.... black! cold.... I am glad you like it.

I know what you mean about staking out the claim of an idea. I did that myself with my first concept and felt bad afterwards after learning that quite a few people seemed to go for this very scene as well and i had the feeling to keep them away from that in a way.

Of course i know thatīs totally bullshit and this time it will be even more fun because of this limitation. And youīre right, this challenge is supposed to be "inspired" by the book so thereīs no need to be too picky about some facts written in the book.
I just mentioned the hatch because i havenīt read the book either , just the inspirational part here on CG, and wasnt sure if this is part of a bigger story in the book or not.
Of course you have every right to change whatever you want.

Good luck and have fun:)

Just playing around to see what I might do... a portrait of Major Mirsky.
"Mirsky, from Kiev, could as easily have been German as Russian."

flatline01
10-13-2006, 04:27 PM
for the portrait, i think the shoulders are turned a bit too much. and as a presumed military man, the hair cut seems a bit longish. Proportions are good, value is good. contrast can probably be pushed a little. the light source is ok, again needs to be pushed a little bit. as a portrait, i think it can keep going, but as concept piece, it shows a good sense of charecter and mood.

overall, pretty good.

for the scene, the lighting is really good, and i feel the desperation on the upper half of the body. the legs seem a bit dangly, and not as dynamic as the rest of the figure. the hatches are nice, and the perspective is good. the blue values work well, and i like the red-purple highlights.

keep going on both!

I had some time so I made a version of the first chamber. I haven't read past the second chapter when Patricia arrives so I don't know alot of details.

flatline01: You are right about the hair cut and the skin tone.... I am new at digital painting and painting in general so I haven't gotten the hang of colours and skin shades yet. as for the hatch scene I had noticed the feet as well. Actualy there is no clear line of action in the figure which doesn't give it any dynamic. Your comments are appreciated. thanks

Ok I'm trying to get the stone structure right. Is this how it is? Does anyone have any Idea. by reading the first few chapters I feel this is what it looks like only I am not sure wether the chamber get larger in circumference in the center of the "potato shaped" stone.

Just added some clouds to show the scale of the chamber. I am having trouble with the lighting though. In order for the tube to produce decent daylight it has to be VERY bright... burns up the Chamber cap. Any suggestions?

Wow! I didn't expect a comment from the President of CGSociety! hehe. Thanks for visiting and do visit again! ;) It was very hard for me to make the model in real size... Max seems to not like working with kilometers. So I worked with mm. 1mm = 1m. It made it easier to work with the lighting and stuff. I just don't know how I'm gonna handle it comming down to the details since a human is about 1,7 mm. Anyway glad you dropped by.

Gonzalo Golpe: Thanx for the comments. yeah the angle is pretty dull. I am working on a new angle... probably one from down low near the complex looking up toward the towerring Cap.

Your last rendition looks great, just love it.I'm using a cad program for modeling all my non organic stuff and also are using mm .I also want to show a lot of the 3rd chamber and it is going to be a big job.

Enjoy!

Conkrys
10-19-2006, 11:43 AM
Sonic-X: Thanks for visiting. It's pretty hard to tackle given the huges sizes the book gives. Good luck to you on the 3rd chamber... I was thinking of that this morning. The first chamber doesn't have anything that is that interesting and reading about the 3rd in the book gave me some ideas. Well we still got time to go keep on modeling!

"Here the Stone architects had allowed themselves complete freedom. Treating the chamber as a giant valley, they had strung cables from cap to cap and hung buildings from them in graceful curves."

GonzaloGolpe: thanks for dropping in. I am still in the process of trying things out so I don't know which direction I might take in the end. I will probably stick to the 1st chamber as you suggested and play around with the angle and stuff. I can't take credits for the clouds they are pics.

beelow: thanks, and good luck to you too!

Ok I have decided to stick to the first chamber and make a 3d rendering of Lanier and Patricia starting out with the jeep to explore the Stone on her first day in it. Patricia is standing out of the sunroof with her back turned and looking up-back towards the plasma tube, in awe of the size of the chamber.

Gee tha man himself! Thanks alot for commenting mr. Bear, I am glad you like it. It is a very ealry concept sketch... just trying to get my ideas down. It is funny how you mentioned a futuristic Hummer because that is just what I was planning on doing. I am working on it with sketches and stuff... but I don't want to go toooo much into the future. thanks again and please visit again... your comments will be greatly appreciated.

Siurebit: Thanks man. When you visit again please give me some input! ;)

Really great perspective, Conkrys! Nice camera angle on the giant wall, it really looks fantastic! I'm not certain whether the elevator base and the vehicle in the foreground really match the camera angle of the cap yet, but I know you're still working at it. Up angles can be sucha pain! :)
Anyhow, good luck with it!

Hey Constantinos,

some very nice sketches I've discovered in this thread, I really like the last one most, so I'm glad to see you choose this to bring it further:) ! Already a very nice feeling for the scale of the chamber and a lot of potential with the characters in the foreground:thumbsup: . Great composition, can't wait to see the start of your modeling!

Walrus: Mike thanks for visiting. Keeping a perspective is one of my many weak points... but this is just a concept. I am planing to do it in 3D so I don't think the perspective will be off then .

Sabrina: I am happy you like the sketches. Once I start posting wireframes I would appreciate your comments and advice! I the meanwhile I am hoping to post an analysis of the jeep today. Hope I can cramp it in between all the work that is due tomorrow.
Bring it on!!!

This is the concept of the Jeep. I made all views of it in Illustrator to have a percise blueprint. It resembles to a great extent the HumVee of our days.... but I will use the a materials to give it a more futuric look, but not to much. Besides the book supposedly speaks of the time we are living now.
