Haha I was all excited because I thought it was an interview of Tim Johnson, co-director of Antz and this spring's Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas. Too bad, but still interesting! :D

What is sad is the current state of CG in Utah...big ups to Tim J and his recognition, but the games industry in Mo-mo land is taking a HUGE hit for the worst...

Kodiak = gone
Acclaim SLC = gone
Avalanche = trimmed down
Beyond Games = trimmed and rumours of gone
Saffire = ???

seems like broadcast and Waterford are the only in-house gigs down there...

...can someone in Utah update this list?

hey bent,

you're right, the current state of the cg industry here in Utah is not too strong.

In terms of games companies (as far as I know, and I definitely don't know everything):

Kodiak - gone

Acclaim SLC - gone

Avalanche - very trimmed down

Beyond Games - those rumors of being gone are still just rumors, so far

Saffire - they are still supposed to be around, but they are just a skeleton crew, and funding has been difficult to find, so many of their artists are now gone (at least that's all through the grapevine)

Wahoo Games - a relatively new startup, some of my classmates from BYU work here (last I heard). Their website is still up so I can only assume they are still in business. www.wahoo.com

Glyphx - another place where some of my old classmates work. As far as I know they are very alive and kicking. www.glyphx.com

Microsoft Games - these guys could be considered the gaming powerhouse in the SLC area, they're doing fine, but not hiring (as far as I know) www.xbox.com

Incognito Studios - recently bought by Sony. I can only assume they are doing fine, but they don't have a website yet.

Viewpoint Digital - where I currently work. We aren't doing games (not every company on this list is involved with games specifically, but they are involved in the local cg industry in one way or another). We aren't doing too bad, we really are based out of New York now (wasn't always the case, until Metacreations bought us 2 1/2 years ago). www.viewpointdigital.com

Digital Illumination - a small vfx house in Provo that is doing ok, a good friend of mine started that company - Greg Hart. www.digitalillumination.net

Daz3d - they are doing very well, they are an arm of Zygote that split of within the past 2 years. They were the Poser division of Zygote, now they are their own company focusing on providing content for the world of Poser users. www.daz3d.com

Zygote - last I heard, struggling to find a lot of work. www.zygote.com

Powder - this is an interesting little project here. Recently Zygote, Digital Illumination, and a number of smaller operations (individuals or just really small companies) joined forces with an alum of Digital Domain who now lives in Park City - Robert Small. They have agreed to collaborate and pool their resources to make contact with and attempt to bring work from the big productions of the west coast to the powdery mountains of Utah. Their website is www.powderfx.com. It will be interesting to see if their plans come to fruition - I really hope they do. They are certainly capable of great things, and it can only really help out the local community - big up to Mike Gee if he's here.

And hopefully this will be a boon to the local industry as well. BYU has had their official BFA in Animation program up and running for the past 2 years. Because its still quite young, it is a growing program, but still quite good. I am a part-time instructor teaching the intro to Maya class at BYU, and I've seen what some of the seniors in the animation program are doing, and its pretty impressive. Hopefully they won't all go to California after they graduate, but stay and nurture our local industry. www.et.byu.edu/animation/ this website (last I saw) is full of bugs, but it still may give some insight into what the program involves and what the students will be taught.

Anyways, bent, I hope this satisfies your curiosity about the cg industry in Utah. And I'm sure I missed a number of companies, but I just rattled off the few I could think of off the top of my head. See ya!!

I never mentioned MS or Incog, cause I know they are doing very well...I have quite a few friends at either studio...fellow survivors of Kodiak. :)

It is good to hear about Powder. Thier credits make the studio look promising.

And like you I am wondering if Incognito will EVER have a website. :)

Viewpoint was always a given when talking about Utah CG.

A far as the other small effects houses there..I couldnt see myself working there, as I am not a strong proponent of the LDS faith, or faith in general...though some of my best buddies are Morman. :) It seems that a majority of the content is for a faith based client or faith themed in those smaller studios and at Waterford.

I miss Utah at times...and the people there...I wish them the best.

Lets hope the CG in Utah picks back up, or the games industry there at least. :)

Thanks for your reply sithwarlord.

my pleasure bent,

I never miss a chance to shoot the crap with my fellow "displaced canucks". Yes I too call Canada home, Calgary to be exact. Anyways, be good. Talk at ya later.

Wow, no idea there were this many mormons in the bunch. Was pretty excited when I read this interview a while ago. Glad to hear BYU's CG program is going so well, hoping to migrate there to study after my mission.

funny thing about my last post, I was saying that my company Viewpoint was doing ok.

Well, I was wrong. Just this morning I lost my job, as with the rest of the guys in our Utah office. Our New York exec's decided it was time to shut the Utah office's doors for good, to save the company some money. Yeah, that sux pretty bad. Oh well, when life throws you lemons, you just gotta bone up and make lemonade I guess.

thanks bent,

I see an opening on your site for character animators, although i do have experience in this area, i'm more specialized in the realm of character rigging. If there were openings for riggers that would be great. Thanks for the head's up though, i'll definitely be looking into that one.
