I have some Finalcut high def Footage that I need to bring over to an xp system. I have tried renaming the extention so it has a .mov (because that's what it is) But I can't find the codec for windows. I belive that it's the HDV codec that I am looking for.

Does anyone know where I can get this for cheap or free?
(Ps. I also have sony vegas 7 but the tech support at sony is just as useless as Mac's)

Don't know. Can't you just export your mov as a file sequence from the MAC?

I could but then that would tie up that system and we have people working around the clock and really can't afford to tie up another system. Plus we have 200 + shots. So we'd really like to keep it as simple as possible.
Has anyone run across this problem before?

Well, I would rather spend a few extra minutes to export as sequence then not delivering the job but I do agree with you about the workflow and the pain involved. You can try to use QuickTime PRO to do that for you from another mac that is not bein used case you have some.

Few questions:

What codec are you using in these mov files?
Try control+i or command+i in QuickTime to indentify it

Are they using Apple proprietary codecs, like Apple Intermediate Codec?

Is this HDV or HD captured with Decklink or something similar to it?

The codec is an apple Hdv 1080p 24 that it was captured in and that's what we are using to edit in until we get to the mastering phase. Now in windows I have Quicktime pro. But it shows the video as white and when I play it the sound comes through but no video.

where does the footage originate from? if it's from tape it's just a mather of exporting an EDL and recapturing the it on your PC system

I'm not about to re-capture again Pluss the deck was returned. (Blue ray decks are expensive.)
I think that would be more hassle then re-exporting out all the footage to a diffrent format.

There has to be a quicktime codec that can support an mov that has hdv compression for the pc.
If there is anyone out there who has the codec please msg me or reply to this thread.
All I need is it's name.

But I have been comming in at night when we have a free workstation and Slowly exporting all the footage. It's my failsafe.
But if you have the codec or it's name please drop me a line.

You're probably using Apple Intermediate Codec which I'm afraid that does not have a Windows version, thank Apple for that. But you can still use other QuickTime codecs that are common ground in both plataforms like Motion JPEG, Animation, etc. But I'm afraid that time would be a issue too.

Try to open this .mov you exported from FCP with QuickTime and hit ctrl+i or command+i for the Mac to get the codec name. Then search it at Apple's web site to see if there is a PC version of it for download (which I doubt since Apple tend to force everything on the Mac realm)

I only use QuickTime for offlines and they mostly come from an Avid system, so I never had problems opening them since you can easily find Avid codecs for both plataforms. All online stuff is done using either exr, dpx, cin or tiff file sequences to avoid compatibilities problems trhough the pipeline.

But take a look at Flip4Mac (http://www.flip4mac.com/wmv.htm), it may help you out eve tho you'll have to spend a few extra bucks.

Good luck!

That's what I was afraid of. In some things Mac has a very closed mind when it comes to sharing.
If only linux had an equivalent product to finalcut and 3ds max. (blender is close but still not quite there) (and yes I have sceen elephants dream by the project orange team).
Then I'd recomend that we switch everything over to linux.

That's where all the answers are..... I truly belive that Linux ( and the GNU licence) can save the world of computing as we know it. No more greed, money and costly software and as for all those piracy law sutes they would slowly dissapear.... Ahhhh Utopia.

Well enough dreaming and back to work and re-exporting frames.

Thanks everyone For your help.
