I am having some trouble with some stickers I have placed on a bike. I am trying to make the space that surrounds the sticker transparent. In order to do this I know you have to make the surrounding area black but all that happens is the bit that I want to be transparrent is now black. I am saving my textures in targa format and ticking the alpha channel check box. Any ideas to resolve this problem are much appreciated.

It's kinda hard to say without seeing how the image is hooked up, but check and make sure that the name of your alpha channel in photoshop is called "Alpha" and not "Alpha 1". Maya doesn't like it to be called anything else. Also make sure your TGA is 32 Bit.
