My first enry for my first contest. I am basing it on two main concepts along the challenge intentions:
1-I really like the title "Worlds within worlds", so that is the idea I choose to work on. You can realize that the composition consists of a circle within a circle.
2-Impact. I want to show how spetacular is the general situation in the book, and what I mean by "general" is that everything must be there, the hero, the chambers, the Stone and the Earth.
I am going to add Patricia's refletion on the window.

Thanks.
Hugo

I am trying to show Patricia in the OTV, amazed as watch the first chamber landscape from the top moments after have entered the Stone - with the Earth yet in the background. But, reading the referred part of the book, it seems not possible. ;( God, that's hard!

What you say?

Here is a sketch of the whole scene. Inumerous adjustments in Patricia's face will be made during the paiting (as you know). :)

See you in the next.

Here is a sketch for light and shadow and later the painting process. I am still thinking about the texture of the glove , maybe change it to look more like an "astronaut" type; and I've also considered the fingers' shadow strategically covering more of her face.

Well, now I am just chewing on it since we have a long time till deadline - I must wait in the case of a better idea come up.

I had to take a decision about the hair and the shadow of her hand. Actually I am pushed to put that shadow because it must be according to the light position and all the rest. I had previewed that a little more out of her face.

Here is the composition. The Earth could not be in the background as it was before, since it has to be placed behind the Stone if one looks towards the Entrace (which is described as on the 'dark side' of the asteroid).

Cool work and interesting concept :bounce:

Just my thoughts: IMHO the girl/Patricia looks too afraid... for me it`s like a horror movie poster and not SF  Why do not try to make her touching a virtual screen with a finger, a mathematical symbol, a technical drawing of a machine... you know certainly what I mean.

Anyway great work so far

I don't think she looks too afraid, because in the book she is afraid and horrified about the Death. It is refreshing to see a Patricia that is showing emotion instead of looking like a babe ( or a neandrathal like mine does , ha ha). Just my crit on the emotion of your Patricia. As for Composition, it is really kind of hard to tell what exactly she is doing, I know there is the Earth and the Potato, might be better to try to zoom out of the whole scene IE: Making the earth and Potato smaller ( Is she looking at a video display? ) Not sure really what is happening, but if nothing is happening other than the Patricia the Earth and the Stone, then ignore my comments :)

Despite many critics (not here, but spoken critics from my brother) I insist to keep this daring composition.

I added some stellites or space stations to intensify the perspective around the asteroid, giving it a good depth sense.

I have some notes to follow from now, added to any suggestion that you may come up with:

1 - Add many details and texture on the shuttle interior to make it look like a shuttle interior.

2 - The beehive texture around the entrace.

3 - Take a decision about the backgrond window.

4 - Tiny spaceships to "indicate" the scale is a good idea, but do they look nice that small?

5 - All the rest.

Good luck!

Believe me or not, I do thought about mathematical symbols, but actually I was thinking to put them in the background, in a computer screen or something. Maybe I can do it.

About her expression... if you think so, then I will pay attetion to it while I paint from now on, or maybe I will try to give her a reason to be really scared. :)

Thank you.

This is one part of the work. I am doing it in two files, and this one alrealdy finished... or almost.
The satellites are from Earth and they are placed there to monitor what happens around the entrace of the asteroid. It justifies why Patricia says: "We did all this in just five years?". "No, it was there already" (I wish I could say that)... only the satellites are terraqueous.

lol, here we go with text again, I got to that stage and decided I may as well leave it out , was giving me such a headache.

Your text looks too big for the rest of the composition and also the worlds within worlds is at a different angle than the rest of it.... throws the whole thing off a bit , to my eye anyway. The illustration is awesome, you have done a great job :)

"In the middle of the large polar crater was an indentation-judging from the scale of the Stone itself, quite tiny, no more than a kilometer deep and three or four kilometers wide.

The Stone’s rotation was easily discernible. As the OTV matched course with the Stone, then began its approach along the axis, the crater enlarged and showed even more detail.

With hardly any surprise at all, Patricia realized the floor was marked by shallow hexagons, like a beehive.

(...)

“WE DID ALL THIS?” PATRICIA ASKED, HER VOICE UNSTEADY. ”IN JUST FIVE YEARS?”

“No, honey,” the blond said. ”It was here already, I’m sure you’ve heard the Stone is hollow inside with seven chambers. We have a fair number of personnel and thousands of tons of equipment in there, doing God knows what and finding things we’d give our eyeteeth to see, believe me. But this is where our knowledge stops, and we’ve been instructed not to pass along rumor. You won’t be needing it.” "
