hi okmer!
awesome start! great mood and excellent scale/proportions. Could be allready a good way to go or do you want to try some more sketches?
Will be very interesting to watch the detailing. Maybe within the next step the image needs some more 3d depth information to increase the perspective differentiation within the scene.
I would keep the iconic composition you are using here but it might be important to switch the center of interest to the foreground elements.
enough bla bla
good luck dude!

Yap,still not got the book :-(
But in some kind a way,all your works and by reading some chapters and with all the stuff around here,I'm getting into the world of EON bit by it...
And I love it!!!WHooooo.
Anyway, i want to keep up with this epic demesured kind a thing with an human on top of an world, with his nose almost against this huge floating town, (without being capable to touch or it,or maybe capable but really just).
I want him or her to have this kind a expression that say's"""whooooo, when i'll get down of this hill and tell everybody about what i've seen, nobody will believe me!"or"just amazed...
So I did another sketch in this kind a concept.
Later in EON :-)

THx Nwiz!!!
Don't really know what's a gal so It's diificult for me to answer.
If not, the thing she's getting into is really the all lower part of an floating town.
Above it's huge, but indeed the others floating towns should give some more details on the size i think.
Indeed i have to go much more huge, you're right, and bring some more material of the floating town in pic.But i'm still just doodling and scribbling around, and not sure I'll start from here...
By the way, what's a gal??? :D

10-13-2006, 04:01 PM
I really like this one. there is a good sense of depth to the piece, but as mv pointed out, there are some perspective problems. the steps are not quite in line with the figure and the point of rocks. they seem to have a different vanishing point than the rest of the piece. adding somemore rock outcroppings in the foreground may help as well.
i'm also no crazy about the rebreather on her mouth. at a quick glance, it seems like the figure is almost pursing her lips, or some sort of alien. i think its mostly because the rebreather piece is the same value and tone as her skin. pushing is a bit lighter or darker may help separate it from her face a bit, and make it pop more.
keep going with this. there are some really good ideas here.

I'm going with the new one as well, I feel that it reads better from left to right going back in the perspective, it also brings more attention to the fact that the structure is so large. I also like the way you did the title here :) really excellent work, good luck with this.

Great image, very impressive... Perfect layer works and color tone :) but I think the scale of the human is too big. What do you think?
OKMER
10-18-2006, 01:38 AM
I totally Agree with you Greatto, but I'm a bit afraid that if i lower down the human scale,he/she won't be visible anymore at all.
Still gotta find an solution about that.
Because I would like this image to show the totally mad difference between the size of the human and the hanging city just above his head...

Wow, awesome image. Looks like something youd see on a book, i love the colors as well =)
faultymoose
10-18-2006, 03:45 AM
Personally I like the scale of the human.
It's like the planetary-construction-deck on Magrathea in Hitchhiker's Guide - the book describes it as looking much bigger than infinite because it's small enough to comprehend just how big it is.
If that makes sense :)
Simply identifying the human figure on the mountain is enough to give an impression of enormous scale - the mountain helps a lot as we get a sense of mass beneath the human (love the clouds!) and already in a space where grand and epic scale has been established, the city above seems to be merely the tip of a monumentally massive structure.
Absolutely adore it. Awesome.

They absorbe the energie out of light and heat to be transformed in electricity and other formes of energie needed by this town to float and life.
Not sure I'll go on with these designs but i had some fun,he,he.
And if they will be on the town, they proberly will almost not recognisable as they are in a shadow part of the pic.
Later friends!
YES ,YES,YES....coool stuff!...the solar panels are very well designed and i love the last draw you did...flipping it was a good move.

Hey YEAHHHHH, first time I get to the next stage(lineart) in a challenge here!!ha,haaa,YUUUoUUhhh.
Lets go get some beer!!!
Well, i rearranged, cleaned and named all my layers, gave them colors to find them easily and to work my pic confortably out.
And so now I started to pull out my shapes of the floating town.
I do this with a fine 60% hard point pencil and the gum in photoshop.
Did this on a compressed version of my pic.Added an almost white layer above it and put this to 70% to keep the shapes visible behind.
THe outlines will disapear later on as i will start painting.
Yap, just wanted to share my progress with you,he,he.
Still a lot of work on that pic,ha,ha.
Glad we've still got almost 3 months.

Just to say, that even if december will also be quit full, i'll proberly find some more time to get on with my pic, and I'm so happy about that, because it's so cool down here!
Had to say that!

Hope you can come back on doing this coz its gorgeous. I read through the pages and see no mention of any particular place in the book that youre doing.
Personally i think its Alexanderia showing the upright chandelier, although i cant remember reading about beams coming down from the tip of it and hitting someone, this is greg bear's Eon-inspired work! So you really dont have to be so faithful to the book!:scream:
Full of potential. quite reminds me of the scene where Luke is stuck under the tip of the Cloud city....what a scene that was.

Yoop, that has been a while since i came back on this image, and it's so cool to come back on it with a totally fresh view on it.A lot of things has gone through my head eversince i stopped working on it.
So fiinally I came back to my old outlines and erased them.Finaly I didn't really like them.
I would like to obtain a more pattern feel in the this building.
So I restarted and tried a bit more 1/2 rounded traces and a bit of indian/Persian/Art nouveau decorations proberly.
What I did as my image is quit big, is to flatten all the image, then resave it with another name and put 2 layers above the background.
1 for my light and shadow tones and 1 for my outlines.
Then I switch a lot between of them and pull out my shapes as I feel them and sometimes, I discover formes in my scribbles and color changements.
THis is how Ill slowly build it up.
Still a lot to do..aaarghhhh.
I'll proberly meet Santa this year as he passes by in the night. With this deadline I'll proberly won't be sleeping.hi,hi.I'll try to take a picture of him guys, promised!

Well, most of my outlines are dropped down.In some parts of the pic I worked out the details more then in other parts, but as the outlines wont stay, now i've made enough outlines to know where i would like to head to.
Now I'll start painting over them to get my tones and values back.
But I'm hesitating a bit and would really appreciate your feelings about this please.
Earlier on there was made a point about the size of the human, that didn't look quit little enough besides the huge feeling of the building, and somehow I agree a bit, but I'm not sure.
So i made a 2nd sketch with Patricia in the foreground, just besides her vehicule, that could be cool also maybe, but i'm really hesitating.
How do you feel about this?
I wish you all a so nice and happy new year to all of you and all the ones you love!!!

Micheal,Marley, thnks guys!me too, I'm feeling the 2nd a bit better.
Finally with all the work & family i really couldn't read all the book.
But I arrievd at the part where Ptricia enters in the 2nd room for the 1st time and when she gets out the car a moment to look at this giant buildings.
Liked that part, and finaly in the beginning my piece was more EON-inspired, it still is, but i thought it could be quit close to this moment in the book.
All the luck and love to yall for 2007!

Whooohaaa, I made it till the 3rd phase of the contest,I start coloring,ha,ha,ha.
Not a huge next step, but a little one.
Whooo, this is taking so much time, the coloring and finding my shapes.
Almost 4:30am here,hi,hi.
Finaly I just use 1 layer here that put over my outlines.
Then i just use an hardedged round brush at 30/33% opacity and my colorpicker and paint a bit like traditional oil or acrilic painting.
That means that I start with the darkest colors/zones and bit by bit bring in the lighter colors/zones to pull out my shapes. That's it for the moment.
I feel like a lot of white nights will come the next 13 days :-)
Hey, I wish y'all and extraordinary new year filled with loads of love, health and inspiration!

hi remko,
very good so far but currently it looks like you focus to much on segments of your image. Concerning the time I would suggest detailing the whole image equally to prevent to loose the overall impression or getting different detailing-levels in the end which might cause are not submitting a final image cause it looks unfinished.
just an impression
good luck for the eon-challenge and of course a succsessful and healthy new year 2007

Looking good! Given how small she is in the overall pic, I doubt you need any more detail than that at all. Only thing I'd bring up to think about is the head size, which seems a bit ont he small side. She's about 8 heads tall right now. (But then, I've never been too reliable on head size, I like 'em large... Too much animé as a kid or something, scientists have yet to be able to cure me. ;) )

HI, hey thx so much for all ya si nice comments. You don't even know how this motivates me badly!
Yap Micheal, you're right about that one and it's funny you talk about that, because 2sec before i saved for the web Patricia I resized her head a tiny little bit smaller.Me too I more used with bigger heads and a more cartoon rendering of my characters, but I wanted to try something more realistic this time. But I'll give it a try anyway later on!...
Well slowly detailling and working my things out.Still so much to do and especialy I really gotta rework much more the colortiming and depth of my pic.
The car is too big too right now,i'll work that out later on.
While working on my pic, I had a little flash for bringing in a road to increase a bit more the perspectif. But in fact I'm quit hesitating.Which one you prefere?A or B?C&C very welcome!
Cheers mates!!!
Thaldir
01-12-2007, 07:42 PM
A for me.
As I see it, I don't feel the need for a road, in fact it feels that kind of detail that becomes 'too much', definitely better without IMHO.
ReinaldoRomero
01-12-2007, 08:24 PM
Mmmm I say A for sure. I think the road doesnt work well whit your scales, whitout the road the mountain where patricia is looks bigger, also the other montains, whitout the road patricia and the ship get more atention to the corner making the composition better IMHO, maybe is because the road is to bright, mmm and the plane on the bottom right corner looks closer to the spectator, whit the road the scale of that plane is not very good.
That is my humble opinion and why...hope it helps
btw, very nice looking so far mate!

And indeed you're totally right, the road don't work out that well.It takes off indeed some depth.I'll go on with A.
Yap Artvandeley, indeed that Frant almost blown it all up, vired him at time,ha,ha.But I feel he'll be back for "The revenge of the Frant"...

01-22-2007, 09:37 AM
In the B variant things look very earthly after my oppinion. I mean if you manage to create such a fine alien structure in the 2nd plane, the marked street looks so unaccorded. In the A variant things shape well enough to sustain the theme you chose. Anyway, your work looks very good and not far away from finishing. Success!
didzis
01-22-2007, 10:18 AM
I'm all for having the road in there, because it makes it more dynamic!! Just maybe make it more visible so your eye can notice it better and gets lead thru the composition. And it will add depth too.

Tools : Photoshop
Time : much,ha,ha
Eversince the first time I saw the contest and espacialy the inspiration page I felt this pic inside of me in some kind of way.
I wanted to do the top of an iceberg upside down in some kind of way.
Because this part of the upside down town is just a small part of all that's above.
I wanted to play on the "wowww, this is huge!!!"
I've opted for a very simple composition to try to catch the eye quickly of passants or people seeing it from far.the triangle above and "V" under.
Once the eye is cathed a huge labyrinth of details is hiding behind the first view.
The story is that, Patricia who went true space and the first"quit empty" chamber, did not quit realise yet the "huge WOW "factor of what happened to her"...
Once she gets into the second chamber and slowy turns her head to the "sky" the people in the cinema can start hearing her hart beating stronger...Slowly the camera turns to the "sky" also and the music...something like "Dead can dance" with the song "Yulunga"(spirit dance) slowly takes over the sound of her heart beating...Then suddenly this giant and huge structure that seems endless appears...and Patricia, the same as the people watching the movie in cinema on the other side of the screen goes like : "wowwwww!!! this is huge!!!"
That was the moment i wanted to capture in the pic, I thought this would be a one of the first "wowww" passages in the movie...but I failed putiing in the music in my thread.
(and the jpg)
It really was extremely fun doing it and I loved the "CGfamily" experience, being here with all you guys was a honor and pleasure for me!
Thank you all for your super nice words and support,
may ze forzz be with you all!!!
==== Update notes:
Whooo, can't get this rabbit from Alice in Wonderland out of my head!!Showing me his watch!!aaarghhh
Ok lowerpart I've pushed the detail level a bit further and there is still the background, which i'll proberly give a more painterly style not to overload the viewer with details.
Even if I would like to obtain a labyrinth behind the first time you let your eye drop on it.
Then i'll start cleaning up my layers, separate the different elements in the pic and then start playing on them with opacity, layermodes and fusionmask's...welll,uihhhhh..gotta go,gotta go...later!
If not,i'll change in a frog after midnight., so farewell then

Hey, OKMER!
I remember the final image had to be sent as a JPEG image in THIS thread as well as a TIFF uncompressed image via FTP. Did you do both the submissions? Take note that if everything was regular there was a band overflow in the last hours so your image could appear later...I posted it yesterday and received an email confirmation from CGSociety...
It's strange anyway that your final JPEG image isn't here in this thread...? Best, Maurizio.

You should say this to moderator cuz I must say.. It doesn't sound good :/ On tiff upload page was huge message if you didn't upload last milestone. Still, if you unloaded your image on server before deadline they really shouldn't cough you on formalities right? So post this final image, even as a attachment cuz I'm quite curious how didi it went :]
Good luck and see you next chelenge :D
Manzieri
02-01-2007, 01:06 AM
Oh,ho...
I don't know if it's a serious thing, but when you uploaded the jpeg here as lineart/model, final composite, etc., there was also a voice saying 'FINAL IMAGE'. It was referred to the jpeg to be posted in this thread with its final destination the Challenge Page. TIFF image was just another thing. You can read it under IMAGES in the EON Instructions Section.
You should ask into the FAQ section. I suppose you can add the final image inside a last post, but it will not appear in the Challenge page nor at the beginning of the thread because submissions are closed.
Try asking Mibus in the FAQ section...maybe tomorrow they can fix the problem if you have uploaded the image on time...:lightbulb
Good luck for everything. Your image is beautiful.
