View Full Version : MeshSelectMess
Ive rigged my character and skinned it, and now I want to put a bunch of MeshSelect and XForm modifiers in face for facial animation. ( I did this previously in Maya with Clusters and liked the results) However, I am getting wierd results. The pic below shows a MeshSelect and Xform applyed to the upper lip and moved up a bit. Even though the verts on the lower lip ARE NOT SELECTED they STILL move with the selected Verticies. I have toggled on and off SoftSelect and the results are the same. Why is this happening? Also, Is there anyway to paint weights with meshselet instead of using soft select? I think I saw that somewhere in the help, but I thought Id ask here....

maybe u accidently turn the "use soft selection" checkbox on?
ok, I think the deal is that the changes I make in MeshSelect dont carry over to Xform above it, so If I want to change things in MeshSelect, they are not going to affect Xform unless I delete it and put in another X form...is this right?

Could you show a screenshot from your modifierstack please? That will provide helpful information to pinpoint your problem I think.
err, this is kind of embarrasing, but I dont no whow to capture screenshots of 3dMax. I kinda looked around for a how to, but a cant find any..so...how is it done?

Screenshots in max are done the same way as any other app. Shift-PrntScreen then paste into a painting proggie like Photoshop for instance. It's also customary to crop the screenshot to just what you want to show.
okay, hopefully these images are close enough to legible that they are of some help. The first pic shows a MeshSelect modifier with "SoftSelect" toggled ON. Above it , a XForm Modifier that was applied to the verticies of the Meshselect before the Softselect was turned on...
and THIS image is after the gizmo of the Xform mod has been moved around a little to show that there is no soft selection taking place in its deformation. They only way Ive been able to change this is to delete the Xform and apply it agian. I have tried to have the Meshselect and Xform in other parts of the stack but this seems to be the only place that it wont screw everything up...
Anyway, Im planning on applying LOTS of Xforms and Meshselects for creating the facial animations...so if Im doing everything wrong, I need to know. Thanks for the help so far:buttrock:
