What are the techniques and tools used to turn a photograph into a texture map? Let's say if you have a nice close up photo of a face. How can you remove the lighting? How do you turn it into a bump/spec map?

whenever you first take the picture try and have very flat lighting in the room, it'll make for less photoshop work later. and for the bump and spec you just need to greyscale the image and modify according to personal taste. . . .

The High Pass filter in Photoshop is really useful for removing lighting. It's tricky to explain exactly how it works, so just try it out and you will see :)
