Use Pixho's excelent silver shader:

For Chrome, simply make a Phong and set all options to black or 0, except for reflectivity, which you max out. Then use raytracing via mental ray or maya renderer and there you go. This (http://ucsub.colorado.edu/~geddes/images/sink01.jpg) image was created using this kind of chrome texture.

Both of their ideas are great. But what about not using raytracing? Just your standard rendering can still fake chrome. Just as a suggestion to make the rendering faster, you can put a picture into the reflection channel. But still keep the phong shader at black.

Um... Pixho's shader don't need any raytracing. It's brilliant in it's use of lights and speculars to achieve the effect of chrome/silver, and if you want reflections, you can map them on as usual...:wavey:

MY fault, sorry. It says right on his shader description, Works with ray-traced or environment mapping
:p
