View Full Version : Next program, when changing from Cinema4D
pltfrm 02-03-2003, 02:32 PM I'm thinking of changing a to another more professional 3d app, what would be good? Should have good rendering. What app is easy to learn after Cinema4d?
Thanks

A more professional app? Only 2 apps are more advanced than C4D: Maya and Softimage XSI. They're both really really difficult to learn. Maya renderer is crap. You have to tweak a lot of settings to gain good results. XSI has probably the best renderer out there: Mental Ray. They both cost a lot more than C4D, XSI expecially. Download the Experience CDs from www.softimage.com and decide if you like it. Good luck.

Should have good rendering.
I have always been impressed with C4D renders. Without going to stand alone render engines (brazil, final render...) I'd rank C4D's output as "better then most" (for stills at least...haven't seen many C4D Animations)
What exactly are you looking for that C4D is lacking?
Itīs not the tool, itīs the artist ............. ;)

The problem could be the fact that C4D is not so diffused in cg industry and he may find some problems finding a job.

i'll give u an opinion as Cinema 4D user. I love it, great render, powerful modeler, good animation. I'm actually in a Master, for digital animation using maya. Well let me say that Maya is of course more professional, a lot better animation engine (the IK is very simple and accurate), a lot more modeling tools, the new FLUID effects (it rocks!!!) and more. Maya render engine is SLOW and crap as third eye said.
Well... being honest i agree with Pit... if u know how to model in Cinema (or whatever it is) u can model with every app, and if u know how to animate... the same :)
AH.... Btw untill now everything that i did in maya, i was able to do it also in Cinema!! :))
Sorry for my english!

Why not hold on, C4D is becoming the more professional 3d app, and will be one of the most one day, I think!:wavey:

Because C4D is really a very cooool thing! We love it as it is so cool though it isn't as powerful or "professional" as other highend apps now. :bounce:

didn't anyone notice the last one was deleted by the admin, I recommend this kept clean this time.
AS for my quick opinion, if you wanna jump ship go for it, I recommend keeping your copy of C4D and continue learning in as many apps (legally) as possible. for maya and XSI which I gree are your only real logical steps up, they both now have good demo versions, XSI experience is awesome, the video CD that comes with it is very clear and informative, though the two narrators both have harsh accents, one french the other I don't know what.
and the Maya PLE apparently has lightened up on the watermark and is very functional, check them out before yougo spending money, but once youknow one 3d app it isn't hard to leanr another, because the basics stay with you as do the concepts of 3d art, so all you need to do is learn the technical.
You could also look at LW and Max, but in all honesty, all yould really be doing is changing your workflow, not improving your tools.
?Even maya and XSI, while definitely more powerful overall, most of that power isn't touched unless in the studio houses, otherwise the capabilities are similar and its again more of a matter of workflow.

Each version of C4D has been substantially better. Maxon has been listening to it customer base and has delivered.
I say stick with it. Pit makes a good point - it's not the tool . . . it's the person.
If you switch to a Maya like application - you're just asking for trouble and a possible aneurism. Applications like that are really geared towards a production environment in my opinion. Look at that kind of environment closely and you will find that these people are not using Maya alone. In fact, most people are only using a part of the application full-time. Watch any movie that is tricked out with special effects and check out the credits, they list all the FX people in groups of Modelers, Animators, etc . . . They use other applications for rendering, animation, modeling, compositing, etc . . . Their is no one application.
I've been teaching 3D at a local college here in Rochester NY for the past seven years (Alias|Waverfront - Studio) and I know a lot of the animation students (Maya) rather well. From what I've seen, you need to live it, breathe it and eat it every day of your life to know it - and they still never know it all. This leads to a higher burnout rate. They are doing too much with a tool that is entirely unnecessary for what they want to do.
If you want some hard evidence that you don't need to spend the wad of money to make yourself "oh so attractive" to employers - check out http://www.rustboy.com. Read the intro. That should give you some perspective! :)

Maya and XSI are both much more powerful but you pay for it in money and time
XSI would be the easier one to learn. To be honest I would not think about switching until you have used 99% of Cinema or/Max/or LW because there is no point.

I have to say i completely agree again with Nurb'd. Don't forget Houdini tho.

With the free apprentice going on I think everyone should take a crack at it.. no matter what program they use. It is not like everyone can run out and put down 17 thousand! but knowing how to get around in it can not hurt

Please define "more professional"
and show us where you hit the wall
as in some animation or CG effect that was NOT possible
In cinema in anyway .
if you have pushed Cinema to its breaking point
and used creative thinking solutions to create above average
models or animation with cinema4dxl the latest release
and are stilll left lacking i can understand
( for me it was Cloth simulation on a humanoid character)
if not then going to a new program wil not help you as an artist
it may help you when applying to be an 18 hour a day grunt
at some CG studio that uses whatever new app you switch to.
Good luck:D
