Nice work so far, Nathaniel. i like the second even more than te first, maybe just ebcause it's fleshed out a bit more. The framing in it is nice too. Neither one really conveys being in a cylindical world yet. Even just seeing the plasma tube in the background of #2 might be a fun concession to mkae. It would be nice to see some future sketches try to integrate that aspect of the source material. But hey, keep 'em coming! :)

Thanks for the comments everyone!
Walrus--I agree, it's definitely straying from the text so far. I'm more concerning myself with moods and getting a feeling for the overall narrative, and will begin being more true to the text as I get further towards a final direction. I got really intrigued by the idea of those big chandelier shapes in the description and got carried away! Thank you for the comments, and I look forward to your thoughts as the images progress. Thanks again!

Nathaniel West is entered in the "Eon Challenge" update: View Challenge Page (http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/eon/view_entries.php?challenger=12065)
Latest Update: Concept Art: Second Chamber
I like the framing of this piece. reminds me somewhat of some the hudson river school of paintings (which is a good thing :)).
One thing you might want to think about is that these chambers are (from what i remember from my read through and reading these posts) is that the cities go all the way up and around the chambers, so that there are "upside down" buildings "above" you. maybe some hints of those dome-things or just some hints in the clouds/haze of somehting above the horizon...
the background and the sense of depth in this piece is really well done.

Thank you everyone for the nice words!
Matthias--Wow!!!!! You are amazing, and I love your version! Thank you so much for taking the time to do that. I looked at my second comp, and yes, I agree that it wasn't epic enough. So I went with your advices, and I went ahead and did the 2.35 aspect ratio just as you did. It really is an aspect ratio for epic films, and thus epic scenes.
So here's my quick attempt at doing something grander and hopefully a better composition. It's pretty rough, but I hope to take it further soon. Let me know what you think folks! Thanks again!
No problem man, your scene is inspiring, and I saw that there didn't need much more to make it totally great. Your new version is sure better, I think you should be more accurate on perspective though, looks like the extreme foreground plate is a bit off. (just check if the lines meet at a vanishing point on the horizon)
Also, I wouls suggest you put one more of those "mushrooms" between the big one on the right and all the ones in the background - would create more depth. Cause right now the extreme background seems detached from the rest of the pic.
Keep it up!

ramy badie
10-14-2006, 02:25 AM
To be honest, I feel that the structure on the version that m@ suggested looks better than the new one you posted, mainly because of the relative size and positioning of the characters, and the placement of the mushroom-shaped buildings. This is still looking awesome though, just something to consider.

I've made some changes based on all of your comments. I added a couple of other domed structures receding into the background, and I brought the figures closer to us. It really makes me feel like I'm right there with them. The one thing I haven't figured out in this comp is the fact that the whole scened is in a big cylinder. I want to show that indication of that, but I'm not sure that this is the perfect angle to do so. Maybe another pass...maybe I will mess around with another chamber too. Thanks again everyone for your comments!

Here's a REALLY quick shot of the city. I've started to indicate some curved forms in the background...maybe I will put structures on them to indicate the curve of the city as it goes up the side of the cylinder. I've gotten rid of the travellers in this one too. Please let me know what you think, and thanks so much for the feedback thus far!

Tolga--Yes! I noticed you had a similar 'mushroom' thing going, but for the 6th chamber I think it was? In the description of the 2nd chamber, those tall structures are described as pinball bumpers. I think I might evolve the shapes though, just to try something different.

It's a great piece already. I like the mood and atmospheric feeling already evident. I was wondering, as a relative digital newbie, what type of media you use to achieve that look. Is it layers used with textures, or is it within the program itself? Just curious. Good luck.
NathanielWest

Thanks for the nice words Dragginart! I primarily in photoshop. I usually work on one or two layers, and I use transparent texturing and/or photos to add additional depth to the artwork. I would suggest playing with brushes, different brush modes, photos, etc., to see what techniques work best for you. I hope this helps a little, but if you have more questions, please feel free to let me know! I'm always glad to offer any advice. Thanks again, and good luck in the challenge. Excelente lighting, it develope a very special modd, Calm and Natural.
About the key elements, I think you can complete the scene with a distant City or may be you can dreo the entrance to the asteroid, of course from the inside, cause I think nobody has done it yet.

Here's a rough model to get me set in the right direction and for basic perspective reference. Things will probably change or move on this model, as I will rearrange things as the painting evolves.
Okay, I'm off to begin the coloring!

Here's my first pass at color. I'm just letting things flow and feeling for the mood of the piece. I'm not concerned with details just yet, but mostly just the ligthing and the value structure to base the details on. Any comments are always welcome!

Here's the image, but a bit more refined. I've begun adding a hint of the curved chamber walls to the background, but I may actually put this whole image aside and begin anew with a different view and entirely different lighting scenario. More to come soon...

Great job! You've worked your atmospheric perspective perfectly and there is an easy flowing visual path that makes the image appealing. The only thing I can think of would be to add some sort of visual pay off where that "path" ends. :)

A whole new image to begin? well, its nothing wrong with this one :) I supose u meant to make every chamber the same? When I take a fast view over the whole piece, I though it would be much more interesting to make all of those mushrooms different on top. I dont know if that is ok with the original story (I didnt read it yet) but I think it would be a nice touch to a whole image. Other than that very nice start as always. Keep the great work coming!

Thanks for the kind words everyone! I haven't had a chance to work on this for awhile now, what with the holidays and work schedule and such. I have been thinking a bit about it though, and I think I will still change this image completely. In the description of the city, it is described as Los Angeles on a clear day, but I just don't see that lighting scenario from a plasma tube, and to be honest, that just doesn't sound as fun as using a hazy sky to indicate the vastness of the chamber. So I think I will probably pick a different angle, and really showcase the details of one of those big structures. I might warm up the scene a bit too. Hey, and I might play around with changing the structures a bit Ninja! My original plan was to put buildings up on top of each one, but maybe they each hold some sort of power source? We'll see what comes up. Thanks again!

I'm back! Thanks to everyone for the kind words. I've carved out some time to hopefully finish this one. I'm sooo happy to be back with this, as I didn't think I would get the chance to finish things up. I'm going to go with this image for times sake. Maybe another time for the other image...
But what I'm thinking with this one, is a reflective surface on the walls of the chamber, that doesn't show the plasma tube, but gives that hint that it's there. Let me know what you think!

I think this image is simply fantastic. Great atmosphere!
About the indirect presence of the plasma tube on the reflective chamber walls, I don't know... It deppends from its Watt power... :) Here as it is, it looks as the reflection of something from above. Maybe the light should be more linear on the walls, maybe in some way touch the architecture below inside the camera, some reflective buildings...

Hey great update! dig the reflective lighting, very cool, best of luck finishing:thumbsup:
Nathan
NathanielWest
01-29-2007, 04:03 PM
Manzieri-Yes, it's a fine line with the reflection (no pun intended) I'm hoping that the viewer will catch that the light reflection is from the plasma tube, and I may have to make it a thinner and more defined line to indicate that. I think you've brought up an interesting point, and I will make sure to define that light source!
Thanks for the comments everyone! I'll be back with the finish soon (I hope)

Here's my final image of Alexandria. I've added my own liberties to the scene, while following the basic concept of the original text. At this moment, the explorers are just coming upon the vast city before them...
