Hi,

New user of Rhino here!

So I was doing the basic tutorials that come with Rhino demo - specifically the yellow duck. There, they create a solid (sphere), draw a line (or any curve) in front of it, and use this curve to cut the sphere. so far so good.

Now, just for practice, I try to do the same, but this time using a box solid. So I draw the box, then I draw a curvy line using 'Control Point Curve' in front of the box and use the Split tool. However, the box cannot be cut. I noticed other solids can't be cut like this either. However, the sphere is ok. Why is this? What do I need to do to be able to cut the box the same way?

Thanks!

UseApparentIntersections should be "Yes" in trimming options. You will see it in command bar when trimming. You should use a view that intersects curve and object when using this option.

Thanks, but I don't think we are talking about the same thing. I was referring to splitting not trimming.

1. Create a box using the box solid.
2. Create a curvy line using 'Control Point Curve'
3. Now, when you try to SPLIT the cube, you can't even select the curve. It is not allowed to select the curve for whatever reason.

Back to what you were referring, which was trimming. I don't know if this would be the same operation - I'm not that acquainted with Rhino yet. But when I do the same steps as I outlined above, but instead I select the Trim tool and not the Split tool, then first I have to select the curve, then the cube. However, in this case I can't even select the cube, because I get the message "Cannot trim a polysurface with a curve".

And this goes back to my original question. Why is it that I can trim or split a sphere solid, but not a box solid?

Explode the box first then trim/spilt it... Spilt/Trimming will not trim the untrimmed polysurface, you would have to explode polysurface so they can become "individual" surface hope that helps :)

Ah! OK, I get it now. Thanks!
