Title: Spike - creature design
Name: Patrick Reilly
Country: USA
Software: Painter

This was mainly just a practice character design. I decided to borrow some elements from the insect world to create this character. I find the insects evoke a certain creepiness so what better subject of reference.
I gave the character a body shape similar to that of a flea and the spikes were inspired by the Rhino Beetle.

Done on one layer in PainterIX using round oils, feathery oils, detail oil, spatter airbrush and digital airbrush.

Thanks everyone.

Like everyone else, this piece is sweet.

I'm left wondering what the spikey stuff on his back is for though. Does he ram into stuff witth the two front spikes? The others could be a defensive thing like a porcupine's spines.

There's a lot of mass that looks like it weighs a lot up there, and his sloopy posture looks like it is a hindrance more than something useful. Maybe a difference pose could show me it is more of an energy force or something than a deadweight.

I can picture him without it being really agile, but with it he seems slow and load-bearing.
What do you think?

HOLY FREAKNESS! That some awesome work there!

As far as crits go, all I can say is that I'd like to see some more illustrations of that creature. Doing so will help finalize that particular life form, I think.
