View Full Version : Skin texture practice...any suggestions?
Mahlikus 02-03-2003, 08:27 AM This is a model and texture I made entirely within zbrush 1.55B. It is still a work in progress. Going to import him into C4D and hdri render him...see what he looks like.
Any comments and suggestions welcome please!
Thank you!
Total time on texture..about 2 hours. I ended up making the texture size at about 2048x2048
Here is a closeup with post color adjustments in ZBrush.

He NEEDS some red in the transition between light and dark on his skin-- very badly. The texture looks good, the colors look good, but the way the surface handles light is more like solid clay than skin. I have no idea what the capabilities of Zbrush or C4D are, but if you don't have SSS with those, try to fake it-- some kind of gradient ramp that adds a warm glow based on the direction of the light could do it.
Check out Stahlberg's skin tutorial, up on the 3D Festival page somewhere-- it's for Maya, so it might not translate directly, but the concepts he talks about are still darn useful.

I like the veiny veins in his head!
I'm sure you're getting to this, but I'd add an alpha bump map to help regulate those textures. I don't have z-brush and just work in photoshop, but I've found scanning your own skin seems to yield good results. The hardest part, and the part that seems to need a little work is the actual adjusting of the uv's so stretching is not visible.
cool character!
I like the goatee (sp?)

Use chanlum in the luminance channel in C4D ;)

Well, I would be considered a noob just because my knowledge in the 3D industry is just that (though I have been at it for about a year). I found the skin tutorial but cannot make much sense of it...ramp...phong? As for incorporating this into C4D, well...i just cant get the material to look right. ThirdEye, by Chanlum, you mean...I am assuming channel luminance but again I am lost. Thank you for the help yall!

It is looking good, but I really think a good ole' fashioned alpha map to regulate the bump would push it into the next level. If you look at anyones face, no matter how craggy, there are places that are smoother than others like ears and that part right under your lips and most of the nose.
keep workin' on it . this is a cool character and it's worth it .

nice work, but just tone down the bump map a bit, cuz now it's a bit too obvious :) unless you want it that way off course

Awesome tips! Thank you. Guess it pays to notice the finer stuff. Thanks a million yall! What about the red tone? Did I fix it a little in zbrush...the SSS? As much as I would like to set it up proper in C4D, chanlum and alpha mask and all. The program isnt mine (client/employers) so I dont have it at home to mess around with...only ZBrush  Well, until I become officially 'theirs' so to speak..then maybe. so trying to get the feel right in ZB is very important right now. In other words..faking it. Guess I just have to see what is going on with sss.
Once again..thank you. I really appreciate all of your help!:xtreme:

Well I thought i had it but I was wrong..lol
This new one actually uses the material more then lighting, fog, and what not....so its as it should be...hopefully.
Anyone..have I done it?...
...close?....
What does it need?
thank you.
