Not sure where to post this Q so i start here. since i am going to composite :)
Windows XP pro sp2 (both computers)
.AVI file exported from an AVID and givin to me on CD
i have two computers but apparently one of them is missing a codex to view the file.
Avid codex are installed on both computers.

Computer1 obviously has the codex i need, it plays the .AVI
Computer2 does not have the codex and i get a error, but no info on what codec is needed.

Q1) How to know what codex a file needs in order for windows media player to play the file?
ex: i guess that since both computers have the avid codex that perhaps i need a different codex to view the file, but how do i find out which one?

Q2) Where to find codex on computer1 and can i just Copy/Paste all the codex files from computer1 to the correct path and have them work on Computer2?

Just install the Avid Codec and you'll be fine. You can get them here (http://www.avid.com/onlineSupport/supportcontent.asp?browse=&productID=10&contentID=3795)

Case they don't work you can still convert your movie into a sequence of files on the computer 1 to be used in Computer 2.

The only tool that I'm aware to find what codec is used on .avi files is G-Spot (http://www.headbands.com/gspot/)

I hope it helps.

Thanks Very helpful!
i do have an install question:
Does the AvidAVIcodec.dll file go into the Win\system32 folder?
i have never installed a codec like this, AVICodec.reg
it looks like it will register the .dll from wherever it is on the computer, but i want to do this correctly.

I don't have this particular codec installed because I use mainly QuickTime. But I believe that all you need to do is to copy the .dll to system32 and then run the .reg one to register the codec with windows.

Have you checked with G-Spot to see if it's the right codec?
