Well....I just got my hands on a toshiba 5100 and was wondering if I should leave the winxp home installations with all the toshiba special utilities or convert the whole darn thing to pro?

(I don't suppose you can upgrade home to pro??)

Although I can get drivers for the video and sound the utilities that control the special features and bios is embedded into the darn recovery disks (which is winxp home)

I was wondering in terms of using the laptop as a standalone and using 3dsmax and photoshop etc...does it matter? Are the major differences in security and network or does it handle memory/resources better (remember it's a laptop)

XP...:argh:

2K that sucker. I was never much a fan of XP because of the way it handles memory and allocates it. It's nice if u have multiple users and u like to have the system "freeze frame" stuff so u can hop between users without missing a beat... but for a single user, and a high end user, XP memory management is really shoddy, regardless of Pro or Home. I would suggest Win2K which has great memory management for multitasking and working with high end software for 3D and other animation.

:shame: XP used to be a perfectly good mango until Bill Gates raped it until it popped....

but that's just my opinion. Other people luv XP... i personally found nothing special about so much tackiness. But yah, u can't go wrong w/ Win2K Pro.

I use XPpro... 2k works too, but be aware that support for 2K will disappear long before XP's support... probably in the next 18-36 months...

it took a lot of umming and ahhing to move to XP....but I have decided to take a leap (I agree that there is some better hardware support - now and in the future)....The problem is whether to use home or pro?!? Since I'll be mainly travelling around with the laptop networking ISN'T a priority...

Professional not Home.

2k's support won't end for at least another 2-4 years. 2k expansion and features....now that will stop much much sooner. Its already happening with Hyperthreading support.

Do remember that even if a consumer/professional OS is 2-4 yrs old that support won't end for it. Most government agencies are still using NT4 and are just now starting to port over to windows 2000.
