Good lord.

Very nice work.

Great details and lighting.

Must have taken some time.

Very slick! I was drawing up plans for an interior cathedral myself a while back but never got into it. This is really cool!

Very detailed and very nice texturing but something about that bottom picture looks very unrealistic. The windows partly, but also the blurring. And the lighting is a bit off with the sky in both pics. Maybe lighten the sky, make it sunnier, or darken the scene to make it more gothic.

Very nice work though.

Edit: on a second look, its just cuz the edges are so straight, you can tell its a fake!! but the only way to fix it would be to create each individual brick which would be insane. so forget it, it still looks great.

yeah, maybe chamfer the edges a little so it rounds off and reduce the scale on the stone textures (edit: the bump on them, not the size of the bricks themselves) cause the last pic kinda looks like a model... miniature model that is... nice work :applause:

the textures need more work (they should be finer IMO). Except that, nice work.

the last one totally looks like a miniature, that bump is too tall
Awesome modeliong and shading, very nice indeed!

this could use a little tiny bit of displacement(dunno what app your using but that should not be to heavy), should be the easiest solution(or some more agressive bump-mapping.

cheers and very very nice model!

I agree with some others: The textures need some work.
But it's really a great model, I like gothic architecture very much.

02-03-2003, 08:40 AM
For some reason when I look at it.... I get the sense that it's a model about 3 feet tall. Maybe it's the DOF, or the bump mapping isn't fine enough... but other than that, it's fantastic!

Great looking stuff!

I think the only critique I have has been raised by the others already - it does have that sort of "looks like a model built by Gerry Anderson" look about it, but even that is an accomplishment in itself.

Well done!

I agree that it looks like a 3 foot high building.
I think you can solve that problem, by decreasing the bump and make the stones smaller.
If you wanna keep those "big" stones, you have to reduce the space between them.
I think those things will help.
Anyway,

great model and detail, but i agree that it looks like a miniature, mainly because of the depth of field blur, u wouldn't normally get this in reality.

didn't you post these somewhere else about 4 months ago, I thought you would have improved the renders since then...still, very nice modelling.

How long did the modelling take? What's the final poly count?

Arnold renderer right? What were the render times for each of these?

Awaiting your reply.

A very impressive work!!!

I just wondered how you did it?
It looks like you used splines to form the model( i.e you had the building as an background image and then draw a 2d spline map from it?). Am I right?

If you used that way, how did you "get it" into a 3Dmodel?
I'm fairly new in the "3D world" and I want to learn as much as possible. It would be very nice of you, if you could send me a reply on how you built that very beautiful building.

Buen trabajo... mmm... es de lo primero de Gaudí ¿verdad?, la verdad es que es la obra que menos me gusta de Gaudí, pero el 3d esta bastante bien hecho, y creo que refleja el "look" del original...

-posted in WIP and I have not done anything since then...
How long did the modelling take? What's the final poly count?
-I made 3 models of gaudi ... this is one of them. Three models late about 2 months
Arnold renderer right? What were the render times for each of these?
-Arnold :yes Time render:i can´t tell nothing about that
I just wondered how you did it?

Awsome work!

But yes it looks like a model! I think it is becasue the size you have made the stones on the side of the building. Compare them to the roof tiles. If you make them smaller the building will look real!!

Great work though!:applause:

Looks very nice.

I think you can improve it massively through better textures. Now, to me, the stones are looking like a 200g/m² structured piece of high-quality writing paper.
I assume you are using the same bump map for the bricks as well as for the gaps between them. I would try to separate them, so that it is possible to control the bump amount of each one independently. Thus, it should be possible to make the gaps more "deeper" w/o an overuse of the stone-bump map.

I´m not too sure about the color of the diffuse map either, even if a photograph served as a base, but that´s maybe just me...

Hello
The pic is great, great detail.
What jumped into my eye was the windows and the sky.
Both belong together in some ways.
To make bot more realistic at the same time do the following (this will only work if you are using a raytracer that does not cut off the reflections at 100% brightness, like LWs does i.e):
The sky is too dark. Make the sky- surface more than 100% liminous (possibly like 200% or even more, it is a bit about testing and the mood you want to get).
The windows in contrast are too reflecting too much. So set down the reflection of the windows and give them a darker bluish color.
This way you will get ore contrast in your reflections.
Otherwise great work!

Wow!
Ah well, scratch that with the diffuse map completely. I should have looked at the name of the architect twice.

The surface of the stone looks really like, well, paper (real picture). Somehow. Uh. Hm. Forget it. ;) :D. Quarrystone. Surreal.

I think this is some pretty amazing stuff. I agree with the earlier crits (textures). Why so hush-hush about the render times, it's not like any of us are going to have a chance to use the Arnold renderer.

The reason your building looks so small is the depth of field you've used.
If you focus at something huge from that point, it wont be that blury :p
And btw, amazing piece of artwork

very nice, however it looks like a model. Some scaling of the textures will fix that up for you.

Per-Anders
02-03-2003, 07:11 PM
lovely image, andmodel but problemeatic because of the stone texture and here's why.

in a real stone building the stones used start out larger at the bottom and grade upwards, they then have futher bracing blocks every 15 or so feet which are larger, but more importantly wider, spreading the load of the above blocks accross the blocks beneath.

because this model has no difference in the sizes of the blocks layyer to layer if gives the impression of a modern building where the masonry is in fact a cladding and serves no purpose. it's also what i deem a common fault of postmodern replicas of traditional building styles, as there is no function left apart from beauty people somehow have got the idea that the beauty is in the stone alone rather than actually in the functional arrangment of the stones... it's building without zen.;)

but asside from that it's a wonderful model, and just needs some minor texture tweaks to make it look totally convincing photorealistically.

Some amazing comments here for this piece, I can't add much more, but its still rather impressive and I can't begin to think how much work went into it. The minature look many mentioned is somewhat appealing but you can remedy that quite easily :). Anyhoo

It's cool but in some areas the tiling looks like a texture, it's a little skewed (like on the arches...) also the way the windows are textured makes it look like miniatures.

prrr!
07-30-2003, 07:06 AM
great work man

Pero creo que se ve como un modelo a escala ,el brillo de las ventanas y quizas algún detalle de la textura no le permiten lograr el fotorealismo completamente. Dejando de lado esos detalles creo que es un muy buen trabajo y muy complejo,

first i must congratulate you on completing such a project. ive been planing something of the like for a future project. the ground plan is well thought out, it has everything a good gothic church needs, apse, ambulatory, radiating chapels, transept, nave, and five isles. oo, very nice. the window style you have chosen is a bit understated and spratic for the gothic area though. gothic architecture is all about light. the basic premiss of the design is that light is from the heavens and thus by letting more light in you became closer to god.
i see your cathedral has a ground story, gallery, and claristory which would put it in a very early gothic era before they scraped the gallery. one might try to add large occlulus windows to the top claristory section, it might give the whole structure a more gothic look, adopting a constant window style for the rest of the building would also unify the building. the gallery level windows on your ambulatory are exceptionally gothic and well suited for the rest of your cathedral. no gothic structure was built without reference to another. check out, paris, leon, chartres, and reims cathedrals for reference. they closely resemble yours. especially paris since it has five isles.
all in all this is a wonderful piece the lighting and texturing are wonderful. and the surroundings are very well done.

Looks good, but it looks like a small model (maquette) photographed with a macro lens because of your DOF settings. Is that your intention? I would change the DOF values to achieve a normal lens look...Looking the DOF in architecture pictures helps a lot...

Cheers
