Hi everybody,
I'm new here and this is my first CG-Challenge/Thread (Guess that's why I got only 30 Kb max.picture-size for upload)

anyway...here's my Idea
I'm doing 'Krangg, son of Garrn' he's of an ancient reptile-humanoid race of warriors called 'The Cairrn'.
Story and details to follow later (gotta go to bed....)
here's the concept-sketch (sorry for the bad quality)

thanks lildragon :)

I only hope I'll be able to finish this in time.
I'm participating in another competition over at 3DTotal:insane:
here' the WIP (http://www.threedy.com/showthread.php?threadid=3203&perpage=15&pagenumber=36)
and the deadline for both challenges is pretty much the same,i.e.
it's going to be some tough weeks to come for me:xtreme:
But I just couldn't resist on jumping into this because I had the idea of Krangg instantly when I browsed through the submissions.

one question : why's the picture upload in the forum limited to 30 Kb ?

On my way master Fetus23 :D

But it can take a while.I've got to finish the other competition first
(though there's not much left to to besides rigging)

WIP is coming soon ;)

so here's an update on my WIP

enjoy :)

(I find it very strange to have only 20 KB of maximum upload capacity.Makes it hardly possible to show some accurate pics
:annoyed: )

leigh
02-10-2003, 02:10 AM
Looking good so far :)

And the 20Kb limit is because the sheer number of images being used as attachments on a daily basis really do start to add up - and are taking up VAST amounts of space on the server!

Rather try and find somewhere to host your own images ;)

H13
02-10-2003, 02:36 AM
thanks leigh :)

I have some own serverspace. Is it possible to link the Picture from my server and to display it in the forum-message ?

H13
02-10-2003, 05:04 PM
Hi Cabramacho.
I too realized later on that Krangg has a certain similarity to the actual Godzilla-Creature.But that wasn't intended by me.
Actually I was more inspired by a drawing of Richard Corben.
I'll post a link to his work if I find a good page
;)

H13
02-11-2003, 03:04 AM
@ cabramacho

here's the link.the best I could find. The man doesn't seem to have an own website.

he's looking cool...continue your good work you say your inspiration upper but when a saw it he remind me Desann the final boss in Jedi Outcast (see the image)

You avatar, is this The emperor?

H13
02-11-2003, 02:48 PM
Hi Martyyr25

Yes,it's the emperor. :)
Selfmade but still Work in Progress.
Last thing I did on him was a cloth test.

about Desann: I think the people at Raven-Soft were also inspired by richard Corben ;)

But the character will finally look much different.I'm going to give him a sort of Blue/beige texture with lots of scratches and a plating on the back. And he will get a Tail later on.

Looks cool!
I got some crits to tell you though.
I liked him better with the little spots instead of the big ones.
And I don't quite agree in the armour, the belt and the boots.
I think he'd look better "au naturel". Without all the civilised trinkets. I think a pair of claws would suit him better than a pair of boots. I don't quite see the use for the belt yet.
Anyway, we'll see where you take this.
Keep it up!

H13
02-27-2003, 05:37 PM
EEYYYY,
Thx Silmarillion

Ok while we're still at it:
I must say that your Model is one of the best Things I ever saw made in 3D :applause:

I hope you'll be able to finish it in time. And as I can see you made good progress in the last few days.

btw, for how long have you been working with 3D ?
Do you work as a pro in a company ?

yea its looking good...the skin textures are quite fitting and really cool lookin.

i think the clothes could work out, but yea I agree that he did look better before

you're right the race is on, keep goin!

i remember when you first posted this. your concept sketch was of an amazing looking character and i hoped you would make a model to do it justice.
you have. this is excellent work: in terms of 'character' one of my faves in the comp. its good to see some interesting style (and very well exected i might add)
only thing i am not loving too much is the colour: sky blue isn't mean enough:)
i was thinking orang red and earthy colours might suit him better.
no worries though: its just a personal thing. this one is looking excellent.
keep going!! no sleep for any of us tonight:)

Hey, that's a beaut, H13:buttrock:
From his craggy face down to his quality boots... Great model.
I like that mottled texture you've given him, though as he's a lizard-man perhaps a traditional green would have been the best. That said, the blue is cool.

The Commander

A loincloth might work y'know. Looks great, but odd without something there.

H13
02-28-2003, 03:32 AM
cloth is already in production Commander :)

I was planning to do this from the beginning (see the concept on the first page)

here's how it looks like so far :

Absolutely incredible job! I love the skin texturing!

My three suggestions:

He looks like a predator, but his teeth don't match that, and the appear to be coming out of the lip rather than jawbone.

The rounded-off studs on the armor make it look less intimidating. Spikes, or even squared off studs would probably help him feel more dangerous.

It would be nice if his eyes were a little more visible from far away.

H13

another update...the last for the next few hours ;)

I managed to rigg the character over the last hours.

http://www.h13.biz/Mainframe/3D/Krangg%20the%20Cairrn/Krangg_WIP_2802g.jpg

thx for the comments Jos.

I wanted his jaw to have something crocodile-like.
I was thinking of him ripping his prey apart like crocodiles do,rather than really chewing or biting it.

The rounded-off studs: I like the look of rounded ones better.
I don't like Spikes very much, because I thought of him using his
Armor for actions like breaking walls or Wooden Gates or something.Spikes would only get him stuck :D

To the eyes: I absolutely agree with you.I'm going to solve this issue with lighting later on ;)

DONE

Just in time i might add

here is my final entry:
(sorry about the size)
the image is about 260 kb (be patient :) )
It's of a better quality than the image on the Challenge-Site.
This was a great competition.
thx again for comments and suggestions, and sorry
for all those things I didn't take into consideration
...time was just too short.

ok....enough said....here it comes:

As Totitch explained above............ ...How in the World did I too miss this thread. I have followed this challenge very closely and enjoyed it quite a bit,but missing your thread is almost shocking, how did that happen??? But I am very happy that I have found it now at least.:bounce:

It's a fantastic creation. The only minor crit, and it is nit-picking I know. I would have liked to see more dirt, grime, wear and tear on the belt and satchel, and a little more irregular spots on the back of the head and the neck areas. But anyways it's a very small thing easily fixed after the challenge in your spare time.

Great head full of true "Character",nice detailed stitching, armor etc,etc... and he is a real fierce looking LOTR creature. Modeling is great and texturing too is very well done.

One of the elite creations for this challenge in my humble opinion. Sorry I missed your thread up until now,but at least I caught it on time.Congrats on a very fine creation.:applause:

H13
02-28-2003, 11:48 PM
@ Virtuoso

thx very much for the compliments :D

and thx for the crits, too ;)

You're right with what you said.I see to those things later on.
I've neglected my creature for some time by hanging around,so I had to speed it up in the end.
Pity I couldn't do everything I wanted (e.g. more detailed textures)
But anyway,I'm quite happy with the final look.
I'm actually glad that I started with the render-tests early enough, since the final render took me about 1 hour (!)
maybe I start another thread when my Character is really finished
:)

How in the name of god did you texture this so fast? :argh: I mean wow man, what app do you use btw? Looks really really good. Love the comp

salud

H13
03-04-2003, 04:19 PM
Eyyy,THanks Lildragon

You're right... I actually did manage it to texture fast.
I had huge trouble at first because uvw-unwrap modifier (I use 3dMax 5) didn't seem to work.
I use the uvw-unwrap for characters, but for some strange reason
the map wouldn't show in the editor window.
So I asked a friend who couldn't help me with it either, but he told me about a tool called 'chilliskinner'.It's basically the same as doing uvw-unwrap by hand, but instead of just mapping, it provides some tools that help you flatten the mesh and then apply a planar -map to it.After that it puts the mesh back together with a correct mapping.
then I used texporter for exporting a template of the mesh.
Only trouble with this was: It's meant for Low-Poly models actually,so in the end working with chilliskinner was more work than uvw-mapping by hand. But it was the only thing I could do since the map wouldn't show in the editor.Hardest thing was to unfold the mesh correctly (I had to move loads of vertices) and after that was done to draw the texture, because I had to constantly jump between Photoshop and Max to see if the changes in the texture were ok (I made some mistakes when flattening the mesh, but time was too short to do it again).
So in the end I've spent about 4 hours with flattening
the mesh, and about 6hours for texturing (working overnight with no sleep).
here's a link to chilliskinner:
chilliskinner (http://www.chilliweb.co.uk/chilliskinner/index.htm)

Accessories (boots,Armor,Belt, etc.) are just planar or cylindrical mappings ;)

here are the texture maps:

Really great model you've made here! 5 points in your face!

About tour problem with the unwrapper in max 5... I've had the same problem. I solved it by setting the brightness (in uwv properties) to 1.0 instead of the default setting 0.0...

But anyway - - love this character!

good idea about the uvw settings !
I'll try this and tell you if this works.
