O.K., time for the first approach. Iīm still waiting for my copy of the book though, but in the meantime i thought it would be a good idea to think about some colour schemes here.
Yeah, i know the scaleīs not right, iīll fix that later . Hopefully *cough*
This shows the moment when Patricia realises the 7th Chamber doesnīt actually end.

 Hey, I like this sketch. Try to oversize the composition to make the foreground more huge. Nice colours!!Go on!
Looking good so far!
You've really captured it Torsten, I have to say that so many people who are participating in this challenge (and it isn't their fault if they haven't read the book) are missing the 'cylinder' aspect of these chambers. The landscapes/cities wrap around 360 degrees overhead - well done!
Nomad

I agree with PMD, you did an exellent job by picturing this chamber/cylinder.
Good work  I`m looking forward to see more :bounce:

I concur. This is also almost exactly how I imagined the 7th chamber the first time I read it's description in the book. I will be definitely checking back in on the progress. Great start.
WOW!
I have to say youīve done a great sketch. The composition is really good, you get a great set of depth in the scene. Iīd just love to see this scene just full of details that trickle off into the distance.
Maybe you need some balance with the characters to make them a bit more recognisable.
Great work!

Hey, so many repiles!! Iīm flattered. No really, i am :)
First of all: this is just a concept, and i donīt know yet if i should take it to the next level. I just thought right now in this early stage is a good time to do some concepts. Later i let you guys decide which i should go for ( hawhaw.. smart, isnīt it?)
Ehsan, adib, yanbing, MVDB, Ramitxon, Squishme, nwiz25,Danbird,thierry: you guys really help me with your encouragement. Thanks a bunch!!
PMD, phew, iīm really glad to hear that. I had a hard time to fully comprehend everything in discription and was too lazy to look up everything, so your statement was an urgently needed confirmation for me.
This goes for Nomad as well of course, thanks Buddy.
Yanbing, thanks for mentioning the sky, because thatīs what i imagined first, which i satrted with.
Ramixton, thanks and itīs great to have you around.
idyeaah,really, i do? Wow! *blush*
Nazirull, you know, this question will pop up quite often in the following contest, so i guess that this time it will be part of the sensation, to look how others are imagining the same locations. This will be fun and that is what itīs all about so youīre more than welcome to pick up this very scene and visualize it your own way.
Donīt make me feel bad ...
piccolabella, thanks for the reassurance!
Neubius, thanks, i agree and i think the image is by and large a little bit too clear for my taste. There is definitely something missing in the front and in the distance. But anyway, thank you very much.
Hey beelow, good to see you back, bro. If you find this comp sexy, then wait and see what they are doing back in the truck.:D
Mr Freeman, thanks!! Yeah, the scale, i know. Well at least i know itīs not working that way, so thatīs a good start in the end.
terro, like i said, feel free to pick exactly the same scene. Really, i mean, this will be part of he fun.
Yone, Okmer, thanks. Good point, i will need something in the foreground, thatīs for sure.
1st Angel, yeah, whatever these next steps will be. Prost:beer:
Hm, stoiik, really no need to invole god in this. Heīs a very busy man....(Thanks, buddy:) )
faultymoose and warpy, Thank you. Very much appreciated. I hope youīre not too disappointed that iīm doing some different concepts first...

Another, quite different scene. The scientists are entering the 5th chamber.
I know itīs not a good concept for a "big", epic picture but because of the mood i decided to pick it anyway. I was interested in adding a wide-angle look to the roundness of the surface.
Didnīt work, i know, but it was worth a try :)

Great sketches, your colour pallette is good, the compositions are interesting and there is drama there too. But best of all you seem have managed to 'nail' the enviromental details which are described in the book, the scene in the 7th chamber seems spot on to me - the small scale of the people with the truck set against the epic cylindrical landscape captures the surrealness of the scene in the book. Great work lookforward to your next post!

Yet another concept. Patricia learned about THE DEATH in the Library and still is shocked about it.
I still think that the first concept of the 7th chamber is the strongest by far until now, but ,hey, no need rush here, there is yet time, isnīt it?

Way to sketch em! Excellent colors. I know you're probably still working on this last piece, but something to keep in mind is the pose of the characters here. Since our focus is on them, then perhaps you can vary the poses a little so that we have some contrast in action.
Good luck man!

Nice concept, but the attention is focused more on the library rather than on the feelings of the characters.

Hmm I don't really agree, I think it does show Patricia's feeling and Lanier's comforting gesture really well as described in that particular part of the book which I think people who read it will recognize immediatly.
Not exactly the most exciting part of the story, but you executed it wonderfully.
The sketch is gorgous, especially the lighting coming from the window and the curtains that dance in the wind. Top stuff!

I really like the library. The seventh chamber is also well done (especially since, if I read correctly, you drew it before actually reading the book; it's very much how I pictured it in my own head). But the library pic was the one that really grabbed my attention. There' no real hint of the wider setting with that one, of course, but it really conveys that moment between Patricia and Lanier well. Nicely done.

I think I know why U said that... maybe it is a little problem of composition : you have 2 points of force on your scketch ( the big architecture with the beam on the upper left and Patricia on the lower right ) Maybe if you find the way to put both of them on the same axis...
I hope you understood my poor english

Michael,thanks, very much appreciated.
Greg Bear, thanks a lot. Trying to keep up with the imagination of another mind sometimes is very hard. I only wish i would find a way to cram in somehow at least a dozen aliens of the second half of the book into one picture..haha.
conkrys, thanks man. Yes, right now iīm totally lost with the perspective, i know, but i rather go with the flow so to speak right now than worrying about that.
Yeah, i love the colors from the first sketch myself but frankly, the discription of a countryside which was "not much to look at" wasnīt very inspiring at the end :D
WIL, right now iīm still working with Photoshop, because that makes it easier to push around those layers. But i will most likely switch to Painter later.

These are looking really nice, Torsten! Love the perspective angles you're trying out. It's great, as always, watching you work.
To tell you the truth, I liked the layout of the earlier sketch more: For one thing, I find this image "left-heavy" Everything's piled onto one side. It looks like a mirror image of a wrap-around book cover: Important stuff like main character on one side, and then text will go over all of the less importnat art on the back cover. I also liked in the last sketch how you could see more of Axis City.
I see we're both taking similar approaches, worm's-eye-view camer angles trying to capture the grandiose (Axis City) and the personal (Patricia) at the same time. Not an easy task... But I know you're up to it!
Looking forward to more...

great concepts you got here! i think i like the first 7th chamber concept, the reckless and vast atmosphere, i also liked the library a lot, although i think it is too static but love the characters in it, you might have something interesting in that one if you work with the angles an the lighting

Hehe, Buffichar, why should i, when youīre absolutely right? This wonīt be the picture iīm going to make anyway and my main concern about it is just what you mentioned.

Really beautiful, best capture of the feel from the book that I've seen so far. The placement of Patricia and the other characters is excellent. Really looking forward to seeing the final on this one!
I got some catchin' up to do... sheesh!

 Great work Torsten
The perspective / viewpoint is really looking good and dispite the vastness of the stone compared to size of a person, you've really captured scale and feel of the place.
Looking forward to seeing how this develops... great work :) :applause:

Minor points:
I think the right side, where you show city, is listing clockwise. It feels like its falling away. Try rotating those elements counter-clockwise by maybe 10 or 15 degrees. It will slightly violate the radiating lines of perspective but will feel better about 'wrapping around' the action. The overall feel is quite good, with the strong elements and the backgrounders. Another graphic idea is to make more of a bright spot on Patricia's face and chest to carry the light of the flaw right through her.

Hi Ernest, good points, thanks a lot for the suggestions. Hmja, will try that later on in case i will come back to this one. Sounds interesting, especially the thing with the spot.

Hey, you guys. First of all i have the feeling to make a formal apology to all of you for being such a lame duck.
I really felt bad about chicken out of this contest. The amount of work before chrismas this time was simply ridiculous, and the thing was that these were joboffers who were both interesting AND well paid. Hard to resist *cough*
I was reading all your comments and still appreciate deply this invaluable input you all gave me!
Iīm lost for words about this ( especially in english)...
Since this still even made me feel worse about this whole thing i decided to go for it and finish ANYTHING in the last week. Therefore i made a speedy today ( well.... actually it took several hours and many speedies to get this last one) and try to meet the deadline doing this Movieposter.
Iīm pretty sure some of you will be disappointed for not finishing for example the first sketch i made. But when i read the book, i felt this scene didnīt fit in well with the concept and mood of the book. Which i enjoyed reading a lot i might add.
Anyway, thanks a milion again for the great support and wish me luck for the last week :)

Looking good, Torsten!
I tried posting yesterday but had some upload problems... but basically one of my oints was the exact same as Norberg's. The rendering on the Frant is great (and I love his leg anatomy) but the face makes him look like a comic sidekick, not a serious fellow like in the book. (I too think he resembles a Gungan.) The 2 suggestions I had were that you could consider fooling around with the mouth width and size of the eyes.
I think it's cute how they're both wearing matching outfits, Olmy's brown on the top, blue at the bottom, and the Frant's colors the exact reverse.
Speaking of warbrobe, love Olmy's robe - it gives the right feeling of gravity to him. Terrific face and pose too.
Good thing you now have plenty more time to work opn this. Keep having fun with it!

walrus and norberg: Thanks a bunch for the helpful input. Appearently wasnīt such a good idea after all to change the concept from the book. *rolleyes*
Especially Norberg mentioning this ennoying yaryar which made you think where is a computervirus when you need one really woke me up. Brrr....
O.K., this is still sketchy, and i know his eyes are not quite working, but since i realized that this is already too detailed iīll leave it that way until the final resolution. After all Patricia will be at least 4times as big.
Thanks Walrus for mentioning the clothes as well, i thought this idea was too subtle to get.

interesting way to edit ones work :D
is an improvement though at least, it has taken out a lot of the "cuteness"...albeit that that also had some charm...personally I would give a bit more volume to the back/lower back of his skull to tone down the cheek bones though

Mr. Frant is looking better, Torsten. Glad the last note was helpful. The long neck is very graceful and the face is more serene than you had before.
However, I think that you could still push his entire silhouette further: Even with those alien legs and feet, the overall proportions of the loges/arms/torso, in their scale compared to each other, are all very human. And that humanoid proportion is emphasized by the fact that he's standing right next to Olmy: Their hips, knees, elbows, shoulders, chest, etc, are all pretty much at the same height. So the Frant comes off as not terribly alien, just an "almost-human" with an exceptionally long neck. Perhaps you could play with the proportions and silhouette even more to really push it further from the current shape and make it feel even more alien.
I'm afraid I can't offer better, more specific suggestions on what to play with, but I'm too biased on how it should appear: I find that all of my instincts on which parts to tell you to exaggerate are based on how I made my Frant look. :) I don't really think you need to make your Frant look like mine ('though in my mind's eye, that's the only way he's supposed to look!) but even so, I think you can play up the differences between he and a human more to give him a stronger form, less recognizeably human but still pleasing to the eye.
Good luck!

looks great Torsten... the only thing that seems strange to me is that the frant's head seems somewhat inside the clouds... i would suggest seperating him just a tad from the bg elements of your scene...
Hey Torsten,
Great work, and it looks like you are still going to polish it up to the last minute! :scream:
I hope to see your final very soon!
Go go Torsten!:wip:

Sasha, haha, ja, tell me about it. Thanks for the encouragement. Helps a lot:)
Hey, Daniel, thanks for dropping by. You are more than welcome to search . Need every help i can get since looking at an image over 10 hours or so litteraly makes you blind for almost everything.
Nazirull, well, er.. thanks. I donīt know about "winner" but surely appreciate your opinion..haha. Actually working on this gave me so much ideas of others and BETTER pictures i could have made, i really feel bad about the fact i hadnīt time to get a decent vision to work on. Well, anyway, shoulda woulda coulda- but didnīt.
Martin, thanks pal.

You've got a new fan, artvandeley! :)
I'm not able to detect defects in this EON rendering, probably the best choice among all the concept art you proposed from your cylinder hat! I like the color choice and the grandiosity of the composition. I'm sure Mr. Bear will not remain insensible to your artwork.
For a while, I risked to miss the bright atmosphere surrounding the Challenge. It was a hectic month, with many deadlines converging on January therefore I'm so happy I was able to warp time for joining you guys on the arrival line!
artvandeley
01-31-2007, 12:55 PM
Haha, thank you all. That really helps a lot.:)
Manzieri, tell me about it, hehe. If the CG-people werenīt so kind to extend te deadline i would have ended up doing silly doodles for this Challenge. If any at all. Thanks!
O.K., the sun is shining, iīm going to run some errands. Any major flaws ?
http://www.torstenwolber.de/katalog/Clos2Final.jpg
I would suggest enlarging your characters, it will fit the image better. But still, this is the best of all! Envy your color choice. Post the final!
Manzieri
01-31-2007, 01:20 PM
Oh, if the deadline didn't change, I would have been out. For sure!:wise:
Well, I saw you added some last-minute characters in the scene, close to the vehicle and maybe to show its scale. I think there is so much for the eye to enjoy in this image that I would leave them home!:)
The illustration seems epic to me with the presence in the majestic landscape of Olmy, the Frant, Patricia and Lanier. All the elements (and there are many of them in this image) work already fine together. The size of the main characters is OK for me.
It's up to you! You are the Creator of Worlds here!

Looking damn good Torsten, only thing I can think to add is just to be careful that you don't lose the depth with too much detail....and perhaps seperate the voreground background values a bit (just thoughts).

Yeah, some haze might underline the hugeness of the flying ... thing. :) I absolutley understand, that you won't like to hide all the nice detail in haze but I guess it would really improve the whole thing a bit.
edit: Man! You're fast! :D
Hey, and watch the rightmost hovering city thing! The middle axis suggested by the structures below the city do not match the middle axis that is suggested by the city buildings. Looks a bit bended. Should be a quick fix!
Und nun drücke ich Dir die Daumen! Viel Erfolg bei den Bewertungen!

When i was a child i loved reading Science-Fiction-Novels ( as a matter of fact i still do :) ) and spend hours watching the front covers, dreaming myself into those strange and foreign worlds.
Because of that i was often somewhat disappointed to find out that the image has little to no connection to the book. So rather than doing a fancy movieposter i decided to go for a classic book cover, more in the tradition of stars like Tim Hildebrandt and others.
A classic book cover for a classic novel.
Patricia is the main Character in this scene. Torn between her old life in her back and the couriosity of this strange future on her right she hesitates to step over the line, the axis which divides her world .
Now it all depends on the two things she still can rely on: her knowledge and her faith.
