View Full Version : Is NURBS modeling unpopular?
ntmonkey 02-03-2003, 05:17 AM Why is it that I see more people modeling in polygons and sub-ds than in NURBS? Is it a Maya thing or is it just too hard for people to bother with? Almost everything I come across is done in polys. What gives?

while I am no pro....... I'll babble a bit anyway..
there is a time and a place for Nurbs...and for Polys...sometimes both in conjunction...
Many people shy away from Nurbs because most people find Polys easier....that and with all the recent advancements in the Poly and Sub D modeling area...it has become just that much easier for people to pick up modeling in 3D.
I started in Max 2.0 and I began immediatly useing Nurbs...though, they really sucked back then. I still look at objects and see them as Trims, Cuts, Lofts, isoparms etc....
but I've found lately that much of what I model can be done just as well and sometimes better, in Polys or Sub D.
It still boils down to a preferance issue.... many still Begin a model in Nurbs... then convert it to Polys or Sub D etc...and sometimes vise versa..
But again, I am no pro...so It'll be interesting to hear what others, perhaps folks in the industry might have to say about this.

It used to be (nurbs) the only way to build organic models but there are limitations to it.
Until the ressurection of the polygon modelling and reintroduction of subdivision surfaces.

I still use nurbs for all my environments and props because I find them easier when it comes to texturing(especially when I am doing alot of camera mapping). Especally in maya, nurbs run much faster in the viewport than polys, so huge environments will not kill your viewport speed. When it comes to seemless characters from scratch poly/subds are eaiser. Though UV's are still a pain in the ass.
