Photoshop CS2:

Is it possible for undo ["step backward" specifically] to not cause layer changes? I hate it when I select a new layer to draw something and then step backward a stroke, it changes me back to the previous layer and I have to click on the new layer again or risk drawing on the wrong layer! Is there an option for step backward to not cause unnecessary layer changes?

BTW: This bug only happens to "step backward" and not "undo".

No this is not possible. It is not a bug - its just how history works at the moment.

I know it may seem wierd if you are only going back one or two steps but its pretty logical when you think about it. Imagine if your history started off with just one layer and over time you added many other layers and clicked on one of those new layers to highlight it. If you stepped back in history to the point where you only had one layer, what layer would photoshop highlight then? It couldnt highlight the layer you just selectected because this layer no longer exists.

I guess adobe could program some "intelligence" into the whole history function but how would you implement it? What if you were like me and actually preferred photoshop to highlight the exact layer I had selected at any given point in history?

well they already have it working the way i want in with the ctrl z command...why not the step backward also?

why not the step backward also?

If photoshop did that or tried to, what layer would it highlight if you stepped back to a point where your new layer didn't exist?

If photoshop did that or tried to, what layer would it highlight if you stepped back to a point where your new layer didn't exist?

history example:

current layer
select new layer
stroke

or

current layer
create new layer
stroke

it would go back to just selecting or creating the layer minus the stroke. therefore the layer focus doesn't change. it already works this way via ctrl z. it should be able to work this way with step back also.

So what you are saying is you would like "select X layer" as part of the history list? That way it would be clear which layer is highlighted when moving back in history.

I think the solution is you just need to be aware that there is a difference between "undo" and "step backwards" and adjust the way you work accordingly. I know it can be a bit of a trap and it has caught me out before which is frustrating.

doesn't necessarily have to add select layer to history...ctrl z doesn't change layers on the user so step backward should do the same. this problem is a big annoyance for projects in which you have to edit and switch layers repeatedly such as when drawing with the wacom tablet.
