As far as I'm concerned, Fantasy is Science fiction, Science fiction is fantasy.
Nice start btw, I agree that's very nicely painted.

Hi, I agree with Jose-Pardo that the work looks too fantasy, it`s like a piece from Lord of the Rings. IMHO if you can change the cyborg`s look to something more mechanical than bones like that will solve certainly the problem and give to the image a hard SF look.
Anyway the image is awesome and I like alot the mood
Good luck and have fun :bounce:

Very nicely painted but this looks too Fantasy, EON is Science Fiction.
I'd like to make the point that a limited view of what science fiction can be may produce limited and uninspired works. Science fiction is a broad term, it doesn't have to all be spaceships, and Eon is a broad book, with lots of interesting images to draw from.
Keep it up dude! I think your off to a very promising start.

Very Nice .Also Very Hellish Atmosphere.Which chamber is the post human in?
The inspiration guidelines are very chamber centric.Keep up the good work.
naetronic
10-27-2006, 06:42 PM
Hey brrrhmmm thanks for the feedback bro...I actually wasnt going for one of the chambers in this concept, I was leaning more towards what was visualized by the explorers and others in the museums describing the Death (catastrophic nuclear war) to come.
Written in 85' when the U.S. was going through some Nuclear war drama with the Soviet Union, I felt a little like Bear wanted to make his readers aware and concerned with what was happening in the world as well as entetain us with his awesome imagination. I know it doesnt really represent the whole book all that well, it was just a subject i thought might make an interesting image, its just my opinion though. :)
I might change it entirely after i finish the book...haha

I was just reminded that I need to provide the work in progress (Line Art, etc.) pictures so here they are.
Heres my original, hand drawn then inked, picture of the character.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v82/tattykiss/eonlineart1web.jpg
Using photoshop i then put the other wing behind the figure to add depth and create a side profile view. I put that on a seperate layer and started painting the background with my wacom from scratch.

Here Ive worked on the smoke and clouds in the background a bit more. using mostly soft round brushes at low opacity and flow with various shape dynamics, cloud texture, noise, smoothing, smudging. I think the color variation still needs some work.

11-08-2006, 12:47 PM
Well this is very nicely rendered, I agree there - and the colors and balance are very good -- but I agree with a couple of the previous posters that this doesn't do much to remind me of Eon, which is a book very close to my heart and I know it well. But that does not mean you shouldn't continue on this course -- your skills are apt and it will be beautiful regardless!

11-14-2006, 02:41 PM
kerem and icedeyes thanks for the comments. I probably will have to change the winged cyborg concept quite a bit to make it work. You see I was only about a quarter into the book when i created it and now ,being about three quarters into it, I dont think it represents the amazaing story of Eon very well. As for the latest one, the V-STOL: it needs quite alot more to make it fit accurately into the story as well, so we shall see.:)

Well It's been a great experience for me to participate in the Eon challenge. Thanks to everyone who helped with critiques and comments along the way. A big thanks to my wife, Candice, who contributed so many design ideas that I never would have thought of on my own.
Influenced and inspired by the climactic moments from pages 452 and 453 here is a little quoted text for eveybody:
"Ry Oyu handed the clavicle to Patricia. She took its grips firmly in her hands. Now feel the power of what is happening, he said in English. Learn the sensation of a correct opening. The clavicle was alive in her hands, part of her, connected with her by its constant picting...The power was exhilarating..."
Greg Bears "Eon" is an extremely detailed and visual story with so many brilliant ideas, captivating characters and locations, what more could I ask for?

Wow theres alot of new entries here in the last couple weeks! I see they extended the finishing date until the end of January, pretty excited about that cause it was a pretty rush job for me, now I'll be able to add a bit more detail and effect to this concept. Here's my latest update: Adding the clavicles glow effect, adjusting a little more color to compliment the bright blue, Adding wires coming from the clavicle, and changing the floor to sheen more rather than be transparent. Be great to hear some feedback before I turn this in...
Best of Luck to All Entries dont forget to Have Fun!

Hi Nathan, Great pic mate!.My note, ;;her head and chest feels a bit strange.Like her hait is dark it disappears in the background.Maybe some little backlight on her could help take her head more out.An overall backlight could maybe bring in some mystery also.
The guy nest to her on the balcony, his arms seems a tiny litle bit too short.
just my two cents..Love the textures also!
Good luck and fun on the last run!
