Is there a way to do light linking in ae7. Maya has an interface were you can tell a light to affect one object but not another is there a way to do this in AE?

Thanks in advance if anyone knows.

layers in AE have to be set to 3d for any lights to affect them, when you switch a layer to 3d it will give you additional lighting propties for that layer below the transform roll-down.

This may be stating the obvious but you can only affect it on a per layer basis, individual objects on the same layer will have the global attributes of that layer.

To have a series of lights affect certain layers and not others you will have to pre-compose the light/layers that you want "linked".

No. Well, at least not in the sense you mean it. Layers can receive lights selctively once you turn them into 3D layers, but that's pretty much it. Like JohnnyRandom alrready said - pre-composing is the motto of the day. Another trick to isolate groups of 3D layers is to break the rendering order by adding 2D layers inbetween. You could for instance add an adjustment layer on top of a set of layers to do so. Be warned, though. While it wil laffect the layers, your lights will still affect your entire scene. For more control on lights, you may want to get Buena's Depth Cue plugin set, which provides falloff lighting and can even generate Z-depth info for you.

Thanks for the replies, all of my layers are 3d layers I took an illustration and cut it into layers and spaced them apart in AE and now I ant to fly a camera through it. Thats all fine but I put in some lights and the problem is the light is effecting all the layers but I want certain lights to affect only certain layers. So my only option would be to pre-compose?

AFAIK, unless you try the plugin Mylenium was refering too...haven't used it myself, but took a quick browse and it does look interesting.

I'm using Depth Cue on a project right now, and it's pretty cool. I'm mostly using it for the "fog" feature which gives good depth to a 3D comp, but the light features are pretty nice as well. I can honestly recommend it if you find yourself doing a lot of AE 3D, especially given that it's pretty affordable.
