ok this seems so easy to do and yet such a daunting task in lightwave... i'm using the discovery edition... let's say I make a box and a sphere and want to select just the sphere.. do i have to right click and draw around the sphere in order to select it ? is there an easy way like maybe, just clicking on it ? also when I do have all the points selected and i try to surface, both box and sphere change ! how do i just surface the sphere ??? .. i'm getting the inside lightwave book this week, so hopefully i'll get better at this.. thanks

To select all the polys in one object, simply select one poly and click "]". That will select all polys attached to the one you selected :)

When assigning surfaces, you have to have polys selected, not points ;)

As a tip - if you have 2 shapes that you are working on, it would probably be easier to put each shape on its own layer - that way, modifying each one individually is much easier :D

i cut the sphere clicked on the second layer, pasted and it still surfaces with the same exact metal i select for the box... are you supposed to click ">" to go to layer2 or the small divided box ? but then the object dissappears ... i'll just play around till i get it thanks

You've already assigned the sphere the same surface as the cube so when you make any changes to the cubes surface it will affect the sphere. Go to layer 2, press q and assign a new surface to the sphere.
