View Full Version : R10 - Enhanced OpenGL bug?

Playing with the R10 demo...

1. Setting anything more then 2 shadows (Preferences / Viewport / OpenGL Shading / Enhanced OpenGL / Maximum Shadows) not working.
2. No shadows with Infinite light?
Can anyone confirm this or it's a driver / video card (GF 6600) problem?

Enhanced OGL depends a lot on your hardware, and of course on the inherent limitations of OGL. I think your video card is too old to support more shadows. No shadows with infinite lights is--I believe--a limitation.

Preferences>Viewport>Show OpenGL capabilities
This tells you whether your card can take enhanced or not.

My super cool mega fast ATI FireGL7100 exceeds the requirements in pretty much every category except for the missing frame buffer capability. So no Enhanced OGL GAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!
That stinketh.... And I was soooo happy about the enhanved opengl features. I can't believe that this expensive workstation card doesn't do it.... I must research!

PS:The weird thing is that a diag prog says I have 10Bit per channel frame buffer available.... ?!

for the 6600 if you have the right drivers you should be able to have 4 shadows at the max. There aren't very many cards yet that can do the maximum.

For the ATI card, while being a highend, its three generations old, most cards that old are missing a few things. the 5000 series nvida cards can't do floating pointimages and suc with transparency for example.

My test prog confirms the availablity of the frame buffer. C4D does not recognize it. Now I have to figure out if that's a setting or a driver issue. I love it.... I bet it's a driver adjustment issue. The 7100 also has quite a few settings for applications. XSI, Modo,Maya, Max and a few other apps are selectable as certified presets. Not C4d so... probably Maxon didn't bother to get certified. So there are no default settings. Sighhhhh. FiddleStix...

WOuld be cool on which cards it actually runs in Enhanced Mode....

Checked the openGL capabilities on my stock x1600 (iMac 20") it claims to be more than powerful enough. I have the latest Mac OS 10.4.8 and when I try to use enhanced openGL everything goes crazy. I get random artifacts ripped across the entire C4D interface. I realize the iMac is not exactly a workstation, but I thought the x1600 was a decent card - maybe not.

Two things, First of all that is most definitely a driver issue, my X700 went through the same problem. Try finding a different driver, but until you do find a different driver, simply set the ogl preference to GLSL, that should work.

Hi

Is there a list of compatable Graphics cards for C4Ds enhanced Open GL? I have a Radeon 9600 Pro whch at first glance doesn't seem to support the Enhanced OpenGL.

I purchased the card less than 6 months ago but I realize the card has been available for a while now. If anyone who knows more about these things than I do (probably everyone) can confirm whether this card is a go/no-go I would appreciate hearing from you.

It sounds like a driver issue to me too. Are you suggesting it is safe to update the driver on a factory installed x1600 on Mac? (I've done that in the past on a G4 - all my Apple software started having issues)

*edit*

By the way, I just checked the setting under enhanced openGL and Cg is chosen. I cannot choose GLSL - it is grayed out.

Have you tried looking in the demo to see what it says?

sorry that was my fault, I don't think mac users have the choice. Don't honestly know baout updating drivers ont he mac either :/

as for what 6600 drivers I'm using, 8.4.2.1

you must mean that the other way round surely as the nvidia cg toolkit is not yet released for mac yet (though you can download a beta version).

on the mac i guess you should only use glsl until nvidia release the final version of the cgtoolkit.

cheers, simon w.

mmm yes you are right simon, I got it backwards, it was while we only had GLSL that my flickering triangles was happening, when CG was added it fixed. My mistake, thanks for clearing that one up.

i can confirm that the GF6600 can handle all enhanced ogl features, im using the 78.01 driver version:)

I found the problem. I can have more shadows.. but only with spots :) Still 2 shadows max. with omni and area. That's with the 84.21 driver, i'll try again with 78.01.
