In the x-section image above the trees are aligned perpendicular to the blue outer ring and are offset by the height of the brown inner irregular "Hills" ring. THis is part of an idea I'm working on for the EON chalange, for effectively placing forrests on the surrounding walls of the chambers. Is this possible to do with the function editor and ecosystems and can I be pointed to the relavent tuts about this.

You need to drive your ecosystem population by a b&w bitmap where the white would be the line along which your trees would populate. You need a large scale terrain/object to populate on, if the scale is too small, it won't populate right.

Load your bitmap in the variable density channel of the ecosystem. Next to the sphere representing the density, there is a filter. Edit it and create a new keypoint at about 0.75 in X and drag the point down to about 0.10 in y
