Ok here is your standard Photoshop spacescape.....i do alot of these mostly for practice....it lets you just experiment and you dont have to worry if it looks real or not......the Ships where done in Illustrator and then exported out to Photoshop and there i applied some more standard "tweekage"
what do you think?

so i guess you dont like it....hehe
as for flares the only flares are on the windshields of the cheesy little ships.....oh and it does remind me of an atari cartrige
