At the moment I'm designing a character with armour which has some awkward contours and curves. How can I make the armour look metallic? Do I just have to paint the effect or is there a special way of doing it?

You would pretty much need to study a reference chrome image and try to emulate that by painting.

There are stacks of photoshop chrome tutorials but they are usually very non realistic looking which probably is not what you are after from what you describe.

If you armour was simple shapes, you could try using an actual image of something chrome and combine it with your image.

Good luck - Chrome and glass are some of the hardest things to draw.

Google Julia Bell. She is a fantasy artist who does a lot of shiny armor on female forms. Also Boris Vallejo is another good choice.

I would suggest downloading some of Christopher Potters chrome styles from the Adobe Xchange and modifying the style as needed.

Of course if you are creating a realistic image and it is in a 2 point perspective you might need to paint the look you need. Study the way chrome looks and then apply that to your painting. Usually chrome is just a gradient with reflections and highlights but the way you impart the reflections can make it look more "real". Whatever is in your scene or painting will need to show up in some form on your chrome. You could use the warp mesh or liquify feature to create the distortions that happen on curved and bent metal chrome. Also consider using the path tool to create shapes for your highlights. I think the best way to tackle this type of projects would be to paint as if you are using an airbrush - masking is key.

Tutorials are helpful but they in no way substitute experience and creativity.
