Hey guys,

I've been into architectural visualization for nearly 2 1/2 years now and love it. However, recently, I've been stocking up on 'extras'...people, animals, ect to help give my work some life. Many of the models I have are 'ready to pose', aka people with arms straight out and animals in standard stances, fish straight. They are ready to have bones.

My question is, while I currently use Vue 5 Infinite to render, I'm getting into 3dsMax8 and VRay as another renderer...

What I'm curious to is...is it moderately easy to learn how to bone/rig in 3ds max? Or would another program be easier to bring models into, pose, and export to 3ds...such as Poser or Daz? Does one of these methods work better?

Any guidance is appreciated.

I'm a 3dsmax user using vray as my renderer so I'm in a decent position to field this.

3dsmax for basic bipedal animations is excellent and super easy, max comes with a premade skeleton rigged and ready to go called "biped", once created you can resize the bones to fit inside your mesh, and when that's done, apply a physique or skin modifier to the mesh and begin painting weights. It is very easy and very functional I highly recommend it for beginning/intermediate usage. Look through the documentation on biped how to set it up and get a skinning tutorial for max and go to town!

Best of luck

So what about animals though? Stuff that isn't canned. Is it hard to set up the bones from scratch?

Max offers (or so I'm told) options for setting up non-bipedal characters easy enough, thought I haven't tried. The only ground-up bones building from scratch rigging I've done is in maya surprizingly enough. Maya's is pretty complicated, Max's I'm sure is a bit too, Biped still works great.
