my basic idea / sketch of the earth, the starfield was created in max, need to add more elements...

added the sphere, i think most of the explosion and stuff will be done using photoshop... other than that ...

need to get a nice earth texture hehe ;)

cool! i found a default earth material in max, but .. yikes! this is certainly not what i want :(

need to work on it a lot .. :(

trying to modify the mapping coordinates and reduce blurring...the settings on the right are the same for all the 3 maps..

some more changes .. this time .. the colour falloff map ..

i think this should do...i wanted the illumination around the earth to be more brighter and a little 'tight',i especially didnt want it to have more coverage...

i even added the original material so i could see the values and change them accordingly in the new earth material...

nwiz25

this is what i got .. i also added a displacement map with a value of 1 .. i didnt want it to be so strong ..

less is more :D

by the way for the displacement map .. i just duplicated the original earth map > desaturated it > and added to the displacement map slot with 0.1 blurring...

will have to see how far i can take this image ... :s

more updates soon ;)

nwiz25
10-07-2006, 03:08 AM
hey culpin :) ... i used 3dsmax default earth material, located in the library, but as u can see i had to modify it a lot in order get the right look.

check out the link given below...lots of earth maps!

a very basic work on the asteriod...created using an ellipse shape..then smudge tool .. a little bit of the dodge tool and finally a textured brush ... hope this works :(

nwiz25
10-08-2006, 12:13 PM

this is the reason why i kept the earth atmosphere ring thick and bright ... using color dodge layer blending mode, i ended up with this ...
still a long way to go ... sighhh ... :(

ok ... keeping the earlier layer hidden, n using a peach colour..i started painting a basic shape, then using erase tool with the brush parameters like spacing..scatter..shape dynamics..opacity jitter ... and finally a smudge brush .. this is what i came up with ...

nwiz25
10-08-2006, 12:31 PM

after revealing the intial layer and placing it over the second one ... this is what i got ...

really sorry for the typo ..

for stage 3 i mentioned that i kept two layers hidden .. it is actually one ..

moving on ...

a thin streak ...this might come in handy when i'll add more layers .. lets see what happens .. :S

i extended the asteroid's 'tail' ... a slightly thick blue wavy tail ...

using smudge brush to give it more irregularity ...

still ... more ... :( this is not enough :(

sighh .... ok .... now i added a very thick crimson cloud trail ... i could've easily added smoke and all .. but i wanted everything to be 'seen' ...

paying a lot of attention here ...

hehe .. added the 'twins' .. :) :) :) :)

but yet maintaining colour difference ... this is it .. i think .. :(
ummm ... maybe one more :O ...

im going crazy ...

drawing the line now for the asteriod!!

well i added a few more layers to define the body of the trail ..

i used overlay layer blending mode.. for the mid blaze ...

actually the way im working right now .. its in high resolution 300 dpi ... so if you zoom into the image ... there are very minute dust particles like everywhere ... even small glowing pieces... sometimes i had to paint each and every particle the way i want it to be .. then to speed things up i created a brush with a lot of spacing, dynamics and scattering and painted trails where ever i wanted ... then finally switching the layer blending mode to color dodge ..

ummm .. i think i'll post a screenshot ... lets see ...

i'm back ... :) ... as you can see, i sketched out tall structures beyond the horizon ... also a very basic brush and smudge for the sky ... i was tempted to add a sunset scene, but then .. all attention will be lost for the asteriod ... ( which is hidden for now ) ...

i hope things will fall into place :(

Hey Neville!

Wow, this you can call a wip-thread:) , great to see the many updates and explanations:thumbsup: !
Great work with your earth, you already have created a nice mood.
But I'm a little confused about your concept, it looks like your asteroid is going to hit the earth, am I right? The idea of the book is to have a huge asteroid in the orbit of earth, just like the moon...
But you're still in an early stage of creation, so I'm looking forward to see how your concept develops...

Cheers,

-sabrina

i had a basic idea of the type of sky i wanted...kind of simple, not too complex...so using 3dsmax and dreamscape...these are the settings..very straightforward...dreamscape sun must be used to get the final result..
here goes..

nwiz25
10-12-2006, 05:01 AM
http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/14/11966/11966_1160629298_medium.jpg (http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/14/11966/11966_1160629298_large.jpg)

this is what i got ... you must have the preview window open to c exactly what you want ... the only thing is that the sun won't be visible in the preview window.. so fire up a test render and see what you end up with. I tilted the camera to match the orientation of the earth and the asteriod...

nwiz25

http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/14/11966/11966_1160629475_medium.jpg (http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/14/11966/11966_1160629475_large.jpg)

this is how i nested the sky behind the earth layer...
need to work around some more ...

nwiz25
10-12-2006, 05:09 AM
http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/14/11966/11966_1160629777_medium.jpg (http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/14/11966/11966_1160629777_large.jpg)

as you can see, i had to get rid of that seam at ... so using another layer, i painted a similar blue tone over it in order to blend the sky properly .. even the smudge tool helped a lot here ...

photoshop is god :)

ok ... more like ..
now you see it, now you dont ;)

i erased a major portion of the sky to reveal the starfield ... also ... you'll notice the space created for the asteroid, the reason .. colour blend! .. i was zonked to see that mid blaze colour of the asteroid blended with the sky which was certainly a no no .. that space had to go big time! ...
everything counts here :O ...

this is what i came up with .. a few itsy bitsies ... blended the sun area a little more .. i could still see that seam a wee bit :| ..

i hope this has helped you all...>:D<

still, a long way to go :(

I bow to your skills of sharing your techniques :applause:

I especially like the meteor. The intricate tail tells me it's more than an ordinary one.
The sky, although very nice, seems a bit strange at that altitude. The clouds suggest the camera is already in the stratosphere, if that's the case the continents are rather small for that pov.

Nonetheless, hats off !

I think the tail of the asteroid is more magical rather than sci-fi... :S
But you're so misterious... I know that you're hiding something... the clouds at that position, the stars in the space... hmm... We want to know!! We're missing the best part, I think.

i finally started with out the structures...as you can see --

> step 1 : i began with a simple cone primitive

> step 2 : this is what it looks like after using the stretch modifier

> step 3 : then, getting rid of the tip, capping it and selecting a few polygons, i detached them as a copy

> step 4 : i flatten the detached polys

> step 5 : finally using greeble
( check it out here : http://max.klanky.com/ ) extremely helpful plugin, this is what i got ..

i hope these steps helped :) ... if you have any doubts or anything, please let me know :)

movin on .. :s

hey guys .. after completing one model, i made a copy and started modifying it...

first model is modified one, second is the actual model and the third is a hemisphere ...same technique as explained earlier..

im back..ok .. now, using different camera angles and making more copies of the structures, i render alpha maps for each one of them...

photoshop will play a major role here :|

nwiz25

this is how i've layered them one after the other ... using the same mask, so that the lower portion remains hidden...

i also had to use the 'multiply' blending mode to get rid of the white space around the structures..

also, the layer sets marked in yellow contain the main 'ring' around the earth...making more copies, i stacked them up under each alpha map to get a different effect altogether...plus, reducing the opacity value in ascending order for each nested layer set...

...hope i get this .. :(

hey guys ... i'm back ... lot of workload, i'm trying to find time to complete the structures bit by bit ... that's why the delay .. :(

ok ... i've now started working on the main building .. as you can see, i've used the dodge tool to shade the areas where i want to add lights ... but, before i did that ... i duplicated the structure and gave it a dark blue tone which is not that visible .. as mentioned earlier the dodge tool will do the trick of brightening up :) ...

nwiz25

using the pen tool .. and clicking the button for ' paths ' not shape layers ...
i create multiple paths on the structure itself ...
this will help me get the lights to move along the path easily ...

nwiz25
10-23-2006, 11:02 AM
http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/14/11966/11966_1161601370_medium.jpg (http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/14/11966/11966_1161601370_large.jpg)

here are the settings for the creating those lights ... please keep in mind that ... the shorter the paths become ... lesser will be the scattering value ... otherwise you won't have many many lights along the path ...

in other words ... experiment to your hearts content to get the desired look! :)

nwiz25

ok ... i've created a couple of path layers as shown ... next ..
> i keep the brush tool on ... (making sure that i'm using the new brush preset)
> select the desired path layer
> finally click the
' stroke path with brush ' button ...

nwiz25

here it is ... :)

for the light layer .. i changed the blending mode to colour dodge ...
i then used the burn tool to darken some of the lights ... this gave me more variation ... i didnt want all the lights to be totally lit up .. just a few ... :)

this technique i'll be using for all the structures ...

so many left ... :(

im gonna go crazy ... :S

hey buddies! sorry about the reverse WIP thing goin on ... wasn't feelin too well lately, that's why i just thought i'd post the new earth composition first and then the summary screenshots ...

( before i go any further, i decided to break down the elements bit by bit and composite all of them in photoshop for final editing )

so now .. moving on, here's the image rendered in max ...

and finally here's the blue sheet
(haze .. atmosphere .. im so confused :( )

that will cover the earth ... making the continents more faded out and distant ...
i hope :S

am i making sense here ... ? :|

this is how i arranged my layers and re-used the cloud maps and blue haze maps to get the desired effect ...

Levels was mostly used for the duplicated cloud maps to 'tighten' the white areas in order to make the clouds look a little sharp and more bright .. but in small areas ...

as for the blue haze thing ... i partially erased a portion of the duplicated layer so that it doesnt block all the details ...

you get the idea ... :)

alright! :) Constantinos suggested that i add more details for the sky ... this is the layer arrangement ...

for this process .. it was sort of like .. recycling .. ;) hehehehe .. cutting and pasting pieces of sky from the left and pasting it onto the right .. hand painting details n all ...

( in fact .. more details are likely to be added later )

Thanks for posting the PS layers. It's a great peek at your process. I'm still confused where you're going with your image, but as long as you are showing the details of how its getting done, its interesting.

However, if I am reading your picture right, you seem to be doing a conceptual interpretation. If so, make a strong statement.

Sacha : dude! thanx a lot for ur comments! its really somethin when i c u here! :bounce:

Ernest : thanx a heap for the advice! :love:me really need it buddy! im very happy that my process helps ... feels damn good! :p ..

yup ... its a composition of elements that i want to show in this concept ... still theres a vague idea about it all .. but im clinging onto them with all my life .. hehe ..

hey guys! >:D< heres another addition to the concept ...

me got to thank Bryce ( Beelow )
for his suggestion :) really helped a lot!

for start .. heres the layering stage ... i used the default planet map that comes along with max .. used spherize filter in photoshop and lots of greyscale copies of the map to give that brightness and contrast with color dodge layer blending mode ...

for now just the layers . :)

ok ... here are the layer styles settings for the planet map ...

please keep in mind that if you ever plan to use a different coloured planet in ur concepts ... do the needful and change the drop shadow colour so that it corresponds with planet's overall shade .. whether its green .. blue .. red .. etc ..

sigh....moving on ... :|

Hi mate

first of all thanks for being the first person to notice me.

Secondly I love your work, and i took my time to look through all the evolution in your work in progress.

I believe that the tale of the meteor which is falling on earth is to big

I loved the meteors tale up to version 6, in my humble opinion I think that it is to much on the following development. (Version 7 and upwards.)

How did you come to the decision to do this particular illustration by the way???

Thanks a lot again.

Yours LostPen

thanx a heap Raul! very happy to c u here! :P

well, as for the asteroid, i deliberately created the enormous tail ... i wanted it to be the prime element that catches the attention of the viewer ... also ... it is 'the asteroid' that will change everything ... thats why special preference was given to it ...
but i will consider ur suggestion and c what comes of it ... :P

on the other hand, my decision was made right from the beginning of the challenge ... till now i havent read the book .. i've no knowledge of EON ...

i thought a lot about the concept ... which i hope will define the key elements of EON ...

if u look closely at my first concept sketch ... u will notice something on the earth outline ... very very rough sketch ... that will be my final element.

thanx again Raul!

stay tuned for more updates ...

cheers buddy! n good luck to u!

No, clicking QUOTE and POST REPLY button has different function.

If you click and used QUOTE from the person who reply to this thread, your message will automatically emailed to the owner and had a copy to the person whom you quoted if they are subscribed just like you said.

If you click and used POST REPLY your message/reply will be emailed only to the owner of the thread.

Anyway, there's no problem with that, I just informed you that you quoted the wrong person though Naville will get the message because his the owner of this thread.

Thanks for the appreciation of the work that went into the classification system.
Love your art concepts .Message me if you want an updated list as a lot
have heavyweights have entered including Monsit and Runwe. Also I am not
flooding as the list is different each time however the same cannot be said of all Nazirull
1214 posts.:).Please visit also the lesser known artists in the list as they are in need of
criticism to improve.

Hi,

Fantastic work! I love it!
What can I say...it would be nice to see something close..an object (one of that ship) or a part of built in foreground...I think would add more dramatism to the composition...
keep it man
I think you have really high chance of winning

thanx a million Eduard! >:D<

i c ur point :P .. actually .. instead of the close up view of the ship .. there is one element that will complete this concept once n for all :) ...

a child ...

( finally i revealed a long kept secret )

if u c the very first concept sketch .. there is a vague scribble on the earth itself . that will be the child ... i will explain in the end the reason he's there ... stay tuned buddy!

theres still more structures to complete ... :(

thanx again dude!

god bless!

as for the description in relation to the book .. i have no clue at all ...

i havent read the book till date ... this entire concept is based on my imagination ...

thanx again dude! take care! :)

Very good image you have created thus far. I like the warm feeling It gives me. Great choice and use of colors. There is one crit If I may, perhaps its not that significant and you may choose to ignore it, ok here it goes: I would consider getting rid of some of the stars that you have in front of some of your big main objects, say "the planet". Other then that looks sweet! :)

Awesome ! Nice work my friend !

Just a little crit : the plasma tube ( or self illuminated object ?) , on the left corner, it is too much on the corner ( maybe too big too) so you have a blank hole on your composition and unfortunetly the eye focus on this illuminated point and is not (enough) guided trough the rest of your impressive work...
I hope this helps...

Happy 2007 my friend and thank you again for your beautiful christmas theme.
Cheers mate !

and idea behind it! Really gret!

Bouboul - i believe the reason the lower corner is so distracting is because this isn't the whole composition you're looking at here, just a small chunk of it on the right side. When you see the whole composition together, the light (from an entire planet) makes a lot more sense and holds the piece together more.

Neville - Haven't droppend in to say hi for a while, but things are looking fantastic. What an amazing wealth of detail! The moon looks great, the ships and the lights from them rock... Nothing to crit, just looking forward to seeing the piece as a whole. Keep going,a nd have a great New Year!

Life teaches us many things ... or so it seems... but, what about the unseen future? We are left to either wait, drift or work our way through like moles in a dark tunnel and experience hardships along the way without making a sound, in fact...on the contrary...who can hear us screaming from deep within our souls?

No one can... That’s life... isn't it?!

Our parents have high expectations of us graduating college with flying colors; make it big in the real world, but sadly, we tend to forget what they taught us, we neglect all our responsibilities, we steer away from what’s good and fruitful, before we know it ; we find ourselves plummeting into a world filled with unimaginable pain and suffering ; drugs ... Alcohol ... murder. Living in criminal shadows... all become us. That’s where we end up being torn between two realms... our dreams and reality... both can give us a taste of heaven and hell.

It’s how we deal with it as they say.

In a different universe, we feel afraid and angry the same time, when mom and dad end up in an argument, challenging us to keep our mouth shut, hold back our tears and walk quietly back to our rooms and wake up the next morning to start a brand new day.

Mankind is still fast asleep, not knowing what will happen next. He holds his teddy for comfort and companionship, he has no clue of about the future. Confusion, fear, depression, lonliness ;
all become his close friends. He has no place to go, everything is happening so fast, unexpectedly catching him by surprise!

A blinding light, a new unknown.. in all its vivid glory render him motionless, What lies beyond his wildest imagination, he dares to explore.

We are all caught between fighting our own battles or running away from them. Are we prepared for the inevitable? Are really that strong to bear all the consequences? or are we forced to see the very end before our eyes?

I tried my level best to capture all this in my work, having not read the book, it was very difficult to bind the elements with the concept that I thought about. Even the colors were carefully chosen to blend the entire scene seamlessly; I specifically used blue, purple and green for a cooling effect but kept the red, orange, yellow for the blazing asteroid taking the ultimate plunge! But on the emotional level, I concentrated more on the little boy; innocent yet filled with sadness, a spitting image of ourselves challenged by all that’s dark and discerning.

How we long for happiness and tranquility, a world without war, selfishness, greed, lust for power!
Its beyond our reach, we can only create a little paradise in our hearts serving as the ultimate sanctuary for self fulfillment.

This is where we live...
Our own world within the world that we die for, still loved and cared for by a divine order.

I guess that's just about it...
this challenge taught me so much!
I met a lot of talented people out here; and i thank each and every soul for commenting and viewing my progress right from the very start!
Day by day all of you have helped me come up with something very special and personal.
I made a lot of cool friends who made me laugh and remember them by their individuality and closeness!

My best wishes to everyone!

God bless all the eon entrants with his love and care!
