HELLO!! nice to see you here Mona So I guess wi will struggle once again ;)
Good luck to everyone. This one looks like the hardest topic yet. I've got no idea atm becouse i haven't read EON and still trying to find any in my local bookstores. Anyway trying to come up with some ideas from just some snippets of the story may be very intresting and challenging.
Good luck and here we go!!

HI - this is how my bore hole is going to look like - It was mostly shader & texture work ( diffuse / bump / displace maps) so I give it to shading category. It still needs some tweekings through
.I also developed basic lighting for a scene And it was quite hard to develop satisfying shatowing .I managed to setup shater and light the way you can see it now
Hope you like it.

good luck in challenge Bartek!

1. If you have Only one polish existing copy of EON , maybe you would like to share with me a xero-copy? Because i didn't have that much luck .

2 . Forgot about using photos of the moon surface if you want to have nice looking craters. You need ELEVATION map in greyscale or other gradiend colors. Photos has shadows which makes you surface unnatural (deep in shadow zone and peak in light) .here is a link of example map you need.

Hey fgdf, I like you work... but there's one thing, related to the tunnel, that is bodering me:
The tunnel is artificial, it should have artifacts or some other aspects that reflect the intervention of man... not of nature, like craters or so... it's just my opinion. Good luck.

maybe some devided bloody bodyparts from the russian soldiers:D

YES SIR!!
In this scene (according to the book) there is one wrackage and I want to show it in animation. But there are no bodies (at this stage of attack ;) )

Now I'll animate camera and show 3d nature of this scene.
From first test I assume I will not have such problems ( Original image is 4444x3000) like constantly occuring FE 0.2 errors . Lover resolution will "eat" some details and I have to make some trick to realy show off.

I "developed" realy nice and "low cost "method of producing volumetric lighting which was my main problem in this scene at the beginning - so the only problem now is meshcount 13 934 812 per scene ...and this is FAT (for my pc :D:D:D )
MY animation's resolution will be 640x480 and. I only have ONE QUESTION:
FRAMERATE - 24? 25? 30? WHICH?

Thank's and cheers

Hi there!

Wow, so much detail in your models. One thing that sticks out to me is the guy near the center who has his arms up. He looks like a GI Joe doll or something, a bit too rigidly posed. Try giving him a more dynamic pose. It looks right now like his arms can only pivot up and down. Just a thought!

Bartek, great work so far, the composition is dynamic and interesting

I have just a crit about the "ground" texture. You can highely improve it by adding more bump and much more texture variations.. both procedural and bitmap.

Here is an example of texture. (http://www.grisda.org/teachers/conferences/2004fc/Meteor/Photos/Holsinger%20Meteorite%20-%20Meteor%20Crater%20Arizona%201.jpg)

ok. The space ships have lights and they fly low but there is no shadow on the ground. You have people walking or flying low. Where are the shadows? Also little bit of fog on the search lights will give a space look. Definetly the space is colder and i had read in the book the first chamber also gets some snow.

Little details like that.

Probably one of the ships spot light should fall on the guy with gun below and you can cast a shadow of the guy on the rock. It will look better.

Hello it's been a while but I'm still fighting.
I rerendered things to mach new composition. I made a lot of smaller tweeks and fixes and I think I'm done.
I'll not postprocess this image more becouse if it's about model not post fx why should i do that.
For sure it's not perfect but I'd have to polish things and details in 2d soft - I'll leave it as you can see it now.
So here it is (I guess ;) )
I hope you like it.

Good job!

Everything looks good in terms of the modeling. However, the composition looks very chaotic. My eye is all over the place when viewing it. I think that it may have to do with everything being in focus. Perhaps rendeing a z-depth pass and some post work could help. I know that we are not being judged on the post work, but I think it can still be a nice add-on to your final still image.

Another crit is that the lighting could probably be brought up a bit inside the asteroid. After all, there should be some lighting coming from within the asteroid due to the chambers and the dock. I think it could also help to bring out the details that you put into the asteroid. :)

Ok, enough crits from me. I now eagerly await your animation. What do you have in mind?

Hi Bartek!

I have to agree with Jedi-Juice on the composition... I don't really know what to look at, especially as an outsider who is not familiar with the book. I think bringing down the lights on some of the objects around the edge of your image might also help...

O..K.. I counted 1..2..3 and that means I have to do something with composition. So will be done. I'll try to make it less baroque and clean I'll focus on rotating docs instead of docs& ships (i'll show off them in animation). ehh .. nature of this contest is very demands a lot of compromises.. but thanks for reminding this to me.

Thank you Magda - I'll spend this night rendering new composition so.. I dedicate this night partialy to you ;)

Ok - I cut some ships soldiers etc and focused on entrance - last night was short but I like the outcome. And I hope you will like it also. Nature of this contest demands to focus on modeling so sometimes you forget about other stuff (at least you don't want to resign from some things to make them better) So back to the basics of painting - composition fool! ;)

It looks nice, however it seems kind of "unrealistic" that the astronauts are placed "exactly" in the empty regions of air, I mean there isn't any partially-visible astronaut behind some machine or ship... kind of seems too regular =/

looks way better already - the pink lights still detract from the centre IMO and hmmm there seems to be no depth to it - everything is equally saturated and equally bright, no matter how far away from the camera - I'd play around with that in post or with renders :)

what kind of camera angle do you have on there? The top part of the main piece is really skewed in a strange way - doesn't quite make sense compared to the rest of the image - did you render them out all separately and composited together or are they in 1 scene?

don't give up - it still can be improved on!

Thanks!

Those pink lights are laser shields;) They have to have different saturation but you really pointed another problem with my scene. I wanted a kind of mysterious haze enviroment built by lights and laser shields. Controling saturation levels is a huge problem on this scene becouse there are almost only lights and.... dark areas. I'm trying to simulate a kind of blue lens filter which changes a hue of all and make it more "equally collored" - without it, saturation is even more contrast. It is a common problem wiht space scenes i guess
http://www.supershadow.com/starwars/pictures/3/r1.jpeg

Anyway it looks like I have to fix it ;)
When it comes to camera
Yes it is one scene I used 35 mm camera and this strange skew is jus an optical issue. Top dock is over 300m length , ships are just closer to camera (each 40m long) and that do the trick. You will see more on animation.
Thank you very much for support and critq you're very helpful.!

I'm preaty dissapointed by max resolution of 640. It is realy hard to show all details in it. What's the worst Shaders & lighting behave different and i think in future contests this limit should be extended.

Cause over HERE (http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/eon/instructions.php)
it says:
Your final image dimensions should be in print resolution (as large as you can possibly render). Do not send in a low-resolution placeholder and ask us to get back to you, as we won't.

I have downloaded your image and it is very nice.. I believe by every angle you pretty much fit into the regulations. I don't see a problem.

In any case, thank you for sharing...

And BEST of luck from here on...

Asaulting the bore hole...

When I read the book I had clear view of what impressed me the most.
The scene when russian ships asaulted the bore hole. I imagined how must have it felt for a gray soldier to see those giant rotating docks , the entrance , all other soldiers and ships flying around
The best about this book and contest was that it wasn't telling you like what to do - how did it look like etc - but it stimulated your imagination to see and image it your own way.
And this is how I saw this scene - and I'm very pleased with it ;)
I'd like to thank all great people who helped me during my battle and reminded me that beyond every vision even the great there stands simple things like proper composition ;) - youre great.thanks!

3d scene:

The idea was to make a cinematic scene - something with breadth that make's you feel a small compared to the stone , docks and all what was going on there.

BIggest challenge:

The scene was ment to be renderet at 4x4k resolution so I put as much details I could have. Than I had to animate them at lower resolution and this was the moment when things became complicated. Some shaders behaved different at higher resolution - some elements became invisible at lo res and some occured as to tim consuming.
Managing over 150 moving objects was also a big task.

some facts

It took average 22 min per frame to render
There are 160 rusiian soldiers on the scene - 1,3 mln tris
5 visible russian ship each 1,4 mln tris
stone surface & rotating docks - 2,2 mln tris
I rendered the scene animation in 2 main layers ( becouse of my machine's technical limitations)
- docks / soldiers / ships
- volumetric lights
