I like the idea with vast land and terrain kind of look, and large smoke/cloud??

wow, interesting concept art! I like the feel of where this is going... though i'm not sure where that is =)
I like the wavy/organic feel you've put into the larger areas of metal where it seems to swoosh through the design of circular inlets and outlets.
- I've just entered this competition, so hopefully when I pull something together you'll have a look and let me know what you think.

hey alvin !
the spaceship look's cool. nice texturing. i think that the blue background it's a little disadvantaje for the texturing and the lighting of the ship. but i gues it would loock diferent in the final scene :D
good luck !
Nothingness
12-21-2006, 10:14 PM
great texturing and shading Alvin
the light on the spaceship are great, but maybe try a contrast between the background and the color of the light. You might change the background of the final, but try and work it out to see what it does.
When i look at your other work, you try to get a global feeling through color. But it's a bit to much one global color sceme. So by giving the light the opposite color of the background, and lighting the ship with the combination of both, you could get some interesting things. I'm gonna try and work with blues and yellows. So maybe try an orange light on your ship in contrast with the blue background. Or the other way around (free enough to try) :applause:
cheers

claudio_jordao, thanks:)
AndreiSzasz, thank you. I haven't decide what background colour yet, may be blue sunny day or sunset? :)
Nothingness, thanks, you are right, the contrast isn't strong enough, I have tried orange and red, they both look good, but I prefer blue just to give it more cool looking. Angain it all depands on the final sence which I am working on it, so could be blue, orange or red, will see.:)

Thanks aurora, I am using Vue6Xstream not TG2. Yes, I had play around TG2 a while before, compare to Vue, Vue to me is much "easier" to control, but TG2 seem to produce better result than Vue and very reasonable price... you know what I mean...:D

Placed trees on terrain, several tests here, I was also surprised that changing colours of leaf also comes out different result!
Here are three samples attached, I have added smoke/fog to for testing...
Will post next one with the trees/plant on cliff, see you later!

Hey Alvin. Good to see that you're still moving strong.
Your environment tests look good. It's my understanding that the majority of the environment within the chamber is artificial. There is also very little hints of an atmosphere except I think in chamber number 6 where it is often raining. Don't have the book with me now so I can't double check. I just thought I would remind you of this. :)

Jedi-Juice,
Thanks for the info, I think is chamber number 4 you talking about? I need to check that as well... :) "majority of the environment within the chamber is artificial" I am working on that now, which give me more freedom to do so, as I was thinking doing more real life environment.
Thanks:)

I did not "expect" to taking so long... but once I see the polygon counts, like about 2 million, that explain why!
Here are some images of close up and difference angles, lighting as well as skies tests.
I am about to finish rendering(if not crash..) than will comes to effects and composite, for skies, fog etc etc, will post some samples soon(hopes!).

Hey alvin,
great looking landscape.
I must admit i'm not a fan of using vue in these challenges, but i think that the thing that botters me most is that this looks just like something on earth. Lit by a sun with a hugh streching atmosphere. I don't have the time to read all posts, but is this in one of the chambers? I know it's hard to recreate the feeling, because a tube light gives a very strange lighting effect.
But anyway, the environment looks nice.

looks nice, even if i prefer more handmodelled stuff for such special landscapes, because - like nothingness said - it looks like earth landscapes:
- its lighten by a sun
- theres no cylindrical shape at all...
...its absolutely flat and thats the biggest flaw on these landscapes, but if you ignore these things, then you have nice looking images. Nevertheless, good luck!

"Fourth chamber was a recreation center, as near as we can tell," Lanier said. "And of course, a reservoir and air-purification system. There are four distinct islands here, each with a different habitat. There were underwater habitats, too-coral gardens, freshwater ponds and river systems. Resort, wildlife preserve, fish farm-it’s all returned to an untended state, a bit wild but prospering."
Hi, I am doing Fourth chamber, and I picked a part to concentrate on, most likely close to"freshwater ponds and river systems", not the whole "Fourth chamber" I must say...:D
The final sky will be more artificial lights and smokes around(which is what I am rendering now), basically the top half of the images will be the huge "air-purification system" and bottom half will be as much as earth like environment.
Thanks:)

i think the sky is still way too much saturated compared to the ground below. Don't forget that bounced light from the atmosphere also lightens the ground and trees. So maybe try loosing the saturation, or give the rest a more blu-ish tone.
right now the bottom part lookes like a scene at the eavening when the sun is is hiding behind some dark clouds. So this contrast makes it looks so unreal and unbelievable.
cheers and i'm curious to see the new model.

Hi Moir, :)
Thanks for your comment.
I know the lighting isn't make "sense", because does not means to make "sense", it has no real sun in it, the plasma tube is the sole source of illumination. :D
I did some tests early on(earlier posts), those images were very earth looking feel but feedback was too earth looking enviroment!
It isn't "real" after all, is inside chamber... I try to create something in-between real world and artificial world... :p the landscape side is "real world" and the lightings atmosphere is "artificial world".
I hopes... at least my explanation make "sense".:)

Hey, Alvin:
This looks great! My only suggestion would be to tweak the saturation down the image. Right now, you've got a lot of very saturated blues near the top and very dull greys near the bottom, which is kind of jarring. Evening things out a bit would help. But it's a great image -- congratulations!

The Islands
… inside the chamber, there are 4 distinct islands. As I imagine it, these islands are mostly covered by light fogs, full of mysteries, a place like Eden Garden, a beautiful and unpolluted environment...just like a new born earth...
Somewhere inside the 4th chamber, there is an alien room with air-purification and recreation, with different habitat in each island, ranging from freshwater ponds to whole rivers systems, from resorts and wildlife preserve to mountains and waterfalls, flying birds - it all returned to an unattended state... all are harvested. This is a land, full of wonders... The Islands.

Congratulations on a masterpiece!
I've only been watching this competition for a few weeks and have been quite amazed at so many of these entries.
Your's in particular I have been just in awe of how you have interpreted this contest.
I am not currently familiar with the story, but guaranteed I will be picking up a copy of this book very soon!
(one little thing that I hope is just my ignorance when it comes to the story, but didn't wan't to go unnoticed to you if it happens to be a mistake... at the end of your animation it reads "ENO" instead of "EON"... please understand I am only pointing this out in case it is a mistake... out of absolute respect for you and the work you have done here.)
I seriously wish you the best (as in first place) in judging, and I would like to thank you for being such an inspriation to me!

I have posted new and revised video... what has been changed, I have re-animated baby alien's ship close to camera(at beginning) and added heat wave on the engine exhaust, if you look closely:) you can see wave there... have also move those flying birds little away from the main alien ship(huge air-purification system)... you know, I don't want to fry those chicken:D .

One of my favorites! It doesn't connect to the EON story as well as some of the other entries, but it is still very spectacular.
