Hello!
And I am begin (excuse my english)

Short contents of my idea.
We see an enourmous mechanical city (inspired "The Sixth Chamber" and "atmosphere surfing on an air-sled"), outbound downwards and on many kilometers upwards.
It consists of largest dwelling and production quarters.
On the right we see a big ship (linkor) flying to the bright spot between constructions.
On the left two small fighters (flatters) of accompaniment.
My main deal, I think to create more explicating alive and atmospherical world with many small details (buildings, ships, peoples and many more).
One of the concept idea is a design of ships, significant sprained on vertical.
This is made that manoeuvre on narrow spaces megapolis.http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/15/11859/11859_1160372588_medium.jpg (http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/15/11859/11859_1160372588_large.jpg)

did you use a specular layer to make the voyager and kraft ships shine like that
no, i use only normal map, i paint it by hand keep all jaggies and buttings..its spent more time and efforts than usual technology (specular+bump map), but make the best result.

Presently scene near 100000 poly (triangles).
And my machine enough quickly processes this scene.
Why so little?
Because many construction will not seen from for ships and so I model it in lowpoly style.
I think in MAIN deal to have a good scetches and development plan of all scene.
And FOLLOW him, then will possible be concentrated on the achievement of good results, rather then concern with a searching mistakes in the bad plan.
After the accompaniment of ships and other small details, I plan not to be beyond of 500000 polys. This will suffice there for that I could render picture in acceptable time and do small animation. :buttrock:

Hello alL!
How many polys have you now? btw, are all seperate objects? Or all in one same mesh? I mean, the texturing is going to be pretty hard if all is in one object right?

On previous wire view each separate element is shown by colour.
I split model mesh on initial stage for best checking for modeling and unwarp textures, then weld all element in one model.
I almost done modeling linkor (not complete stern), and currently in model near by 85000 poly.

p.s. thank you all who keeps a check my thread!

Hi all!

What is your texture procces

All you textures look spot on are you making them all in photoshop ?

I use photoshop only for final color correction textures. Most of work i do in small vector programm called "Xara Xtrem". Its very simple and fastest tool for processing
biggest textures with vector drawing...
This much like like work in PS, and that vector programm give me possibility made final textures in independed resolution. Normal map is combination of hand draw and PS plugin...

The Famous director James Cameron apparently was very fussy over little details (when it came to model making) and he would have a reason of functionality for every nook and cranny on a spaceship.. well you remind me of him, here is everything explained in great detail, so much so you have made me question why i am in this competition in the first place..you make me feel extremely lazy by comparison :scream:

Hey pichunter,

great test render you just posted here.

just a few things: did you use the full textures on the right ship, or is it something caused by the jpg compression?
I think you also used a kind of Final Gather, but it really doesn't show too much. For example, inside the back of the big ship there is too much detail. The light shines about everywhere and that gieve a really flat game look.
Also try the create a good depth between the ships and the background cause right now you could see the left part as one, meaning you won't recognize it as a ship. Because we've seen it before, we know it.
Maybe there is too little seen of the ship to be able to recognize it easy.

cheers

Hello all.
to Nothingness... thank for good critiques (its need for me!)
did you use the full textures on the right ship, or is it something caused by the jpg compression?
In render i use full non compression textures (4000x4000pix), and artefacts appeared after i comress final post jpeg.

You right, for fast test i use simple color scheme (only some omni to fill all scene).
In final render i'll use many spot and global light (this requires too much time presently).

In real, this render is 1/3 part of final composition, and certainly we will see whole ship and many other :)

looking great, besides the depth issue i think you should add a little more colour, most textures are fairly gray at the moment, by adding some variation to the colours the whole thing would look a lot better, maybe some coloured warning lights and such too!

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRGGGHH!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRGGH! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRGGHH! You are insane! The level of detail is beyond awesome!!! why you've got the time to do all this is beyond me! why hasn't someone paid you to not have personal time for projects like this is insanity! INSANITTTTTYYY I SAY!!! seriously its not even a competition for modeling anymore, now it's a "watch pichunter do his thing" and see if jonny-master pulls close.

Dude in freakin sane! I love it! Love it!

honestly, I didn't think you could do it, I didn't think ships with no characters would be that strong but damn you are sure changing my mind!

Awesomeness.

The ships in the last render look too shiny, very toylike, to me. Maybe lower the specularity a bit... maybe :). Great work either way, your effort definitely shows in your work. Keep it up, very beautiful!

Hi all!
Someone ask me what i mean in older post "vector texturing".
In this pic i show how i draw texture in Xara vector programm, this content many small object with complex fills and opacity.
It's give me a chance to export in very high resolution that i need.
That's all :)

Beyond the fact that your work just blows my mind (in a great way) the thing I love most about seeing updates to your thread is that you always show interesting 'work' bits and not just updates to the scene. I have go to start doing that too. I'm a tut kinda guy and I just have not done anything helpful for others. Santa's gonna bring me nothing but coal and I don;t want to know what cool things he's gonna bring you!

I was ready to done all to 15 january, but challenge is prolonged and I has decided to do else more.
Last week I creat video. Only one render has occupied my computer on last 3 day
This video does not pretend on high artistic move, but I seem is got it atmospheric. Hope you like it.

For those that lost their patience in downloading the animation... wait...
it is definitely worth it!
(I have a Meg per sec speed, and it took mine over an hour to download)

The closer details revealed in the animations renders were FANTASTIC Valery (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=189864)!

Unfortunately there was a serious amount of what we call "the Blink Factor" that simply makes your viewers blink per passage from a scene to another scene.
But none the less that is video editing.. as a designer/modeller and a texture painter.. you have done YOUR part of the deal as good as it gets.

Congratulations!

My only prayer for you on this challenge is for the jury to not harshly think in the lines of:
"This could have been from any Sci-Fi story..." or similar.
Because it is a Fantastic scene and all your hard work shows.
(Actually I liked the earlier, less saturated renders... this last one looks too much “Story Book” to compare)

Black
Ps: Thanks for the tip about texturing with Vectors!!!
I can’t believe I never thought of that! Though I HAVE used it a lot for signs and text textures.
Guess it’s time to put my illustrator skills to a challenge after this project is over with.

Hi GREAT WORK you v done here. Ithink is nothing to wory about the scince fiction thing, because EON is a science fiction book.As I seen you are the only one who finish the models and the small trailer at the same time.I like the way you modeling because is base on lowpoly and you think more than a model base, you have perspective of a project, that skill you have make you one of the best modeler I v seen.

I wish you GOOD LUCK! and all the best!

Video gives a great feeling of size, please, please, please get rid of the cheesy music, as soon as possible and just add a deep rumbling sound and whooshing noises, hand-made if you like, ANYTHING BUT THAT MUSIC!!! (please)

Brilliant modelling, textureing etc, all been said before by everyone, such an immense scene could only be put together by an immense talent like yours.

Please get a job at http://www.brickhousevfx.com/ surely you have the skills for that, you might need to move house though...

Can't compliment you enough, I'll be watching your next move. (oh, and more tutorials please - they (CGS) should do a feature on your entry)

Really awesome man, but i must ask, whats with the gai music... I mean it sounds like some 80ish bladerunner happy scene or something...

We want roar, we want brrr, we want aaahhhhh. now thats some real effects. try watching a space film trailer or some great film trailer, the tension is getting higher by seconds and at the end its aahhh or bum and then switch to the eon screen

rorkijon
01-25-2007, 11:06 PM
we need to stop nagging...

Music aside, we all know it's brilliant, and I'm sure Valery just threw some random tune as a filler before we get the final masterpiece.

We just all want it to be as perfect as the modelling, we don't want tears before bedtime!

Good luck to you Valery.

I remain watchful, and respectful!!

seeing your wire makes it obvious just how little detail there is in the modelling - don't get me wrong, it's still a huge undertaking - but you HAVE to give us a tutorial on texturing, to get the kind of detail we BELIEVE we're seeing in that image.
The sheer volume of lights must've taken it's strain on render times, but just how large are your textures?!!! Out of interest, what's your poly count?

Just wow. Again.

Ok. THIS IS final render of my "EON-Flying away".

Small description of my work:
We see an enourmous mechanical city (inspired "The Sixth Chamber" and "atmosphere surfing on an air-sled"), outbound downwards and on many kilometers upwards.
It consists of largest dwelling and production quarters.
On the right we see a big ship (linkor) flying to the bright spot between constructions.
On the left two small fighters (flatters) of accompaniment.
My main deal, to create more explicating alive and atmospherical world with many small details (buildings, ships, bridges and many more).
And i want to show an image not only exact displaying a situation a description in the book, I try to show biggest, massive and infinity world that to my mind be a spirit of book 'EON'.
One of the concept idea is a design of ships, significant sprained on vertical.
This is made that manoeuvre on narrow spaces megapolis.
Work is named "Flying away", and what adventures wait us behind far light?...

Tech info:
All 2d work (scetch, textures) was done in XaraX (vector programm) and Photoshop.
3d work was done in Max8, and video was collect in AfterEffects.
Final image was render 15 hours in single pass without any layer with Brazil render.
No post work.

These three months were for me hard and very interesting.
Thank you all who was interested by my work and gave valuable advices.
Excuse that not to was able to answer all and immediately, time was little.
And thank you all again and good luck!!!

First off: I´m extremely impressed by your skills and what I´ve sen in this thread. Very inspiring!

I´m a bit dissapointed by the final render though. It might be the low res compression, but it´s not as easy to read as the scenes in the video where the warmer tones in the background really brings out the hugeness of the scene. (The music to the video really doesn´t help at all. You might want to skip that.)

Anyway, you´re by far my favourite in the model category and I´ve learned alot from your step by step posts. So thank you and good luck!

I really love your post, and you're also my favourite in this class but i STILL think and agree with Norberg that the music really sounds cheesy and happy blade runner kind of scene, i think its should be more metalic(doesnt mean metal, but to support the scene) and not kind of children playing with frisby like. I really really like your scene, but man i STILL think that music is like 1/3 of the whole thing

01-30-2007, 04:39 PM
Great work, both in the still and video, but that music doesn't suit it, it's just awful! It would be great with a very subdued epic or industrial piece... down tempo orchestral piece, or a very dark, moody and quiet piece by Nine Inch Nails, for example.
