I have to say, I love the Milla model! and rain layered over your zb face looks incredible! I can't wait to see the whole character! ...sexy spandex covered body and a jetpack! OMG!

I really like the flying peoples! Good dynamic choice for your scene!

Cheers! :scream:

- I've just entered this competition, so hopefully as soon as I get some work up you'll have a look and let me know what you think. Peace Peace!

@ Nico: thanks dude! Yeah i think model a basic body is the best way, otherwise you'll lose to much time on it and it will be invisible later.

@ ragdoll: thanks a lot ;)

@ intervain: thanks! And yeah they are a bit flatten, but.....thats Milla:twisted:

Patricia will stands outside the vehicle actually, so i have to model the entire body.

@ Bergquist: thanks a lot! Of course i will take a look on your thread, waiting for your work!

Hey everybody,

i'm on the clothes actually, but today i took some time to improve the skin further. The goal was to create a skin shader that works with any possible light situation. This is really the most complex skin material i've ever made, but finally it works fine under all light conditions.

In Addition....as you can see, Patricia has eyes, finally. It wasn't easy for me to create natural looking eyes, it was modeled like a real eye model, the texture is a mix of retouche, paintings and procedural shaders. I used the eye of a friend as reference (thanks Siri ;) There's also eyelashes, each one contains about 250 hairs. Some micro raindrops are on the eyelashes too, but thats hard to identify at this resolution. On the skin surface there are 100.000 micro hairs, the effect is very subtle, but it gives the skin a bit more natural look.

see you later, i'm going to bed now!

Let me be the first - i hope - to call you insane!

amazing render. Looks great with the eyes and all.
I doubt that the micro hairs would be usefull at a normal resolution. But if it's noticable at high res, go for it!

i'm busy on the body, but i'm affraid i can't leave the detail alone ;-)

I can now safely agree with both assumptions. You have WAAYY too much and incredible skill. Great job linh!!

FANTASTIC !
great work man ... incredible.
what softwer do tou use that alows you to get so mutch polys and works so good with hair .
i just amasing how good it looks ...:bounce::bounce::bounce:
maybe the eyes could be tweeked a little to look so real as the skin does.

Imporessive textures.

At the beginning I thought it was a real picture. Only the eyes looked strange to me.

But it's gorgeus.

I will keep my eyes on your thread.

All the best.

johnnymaster
11-27-2006, 10:14 AM
@ all: thanks for your encouragement, very kind!

@ Nico: Thanks! And yeah at this renderings you cant see the hairs, except of the left-bottom rendering, on the left side of the face you see very, very little hairs.

Good luck on the body dude!

@ Steven: funny postings as always hahahhaa, thanks!

@ AndreiSzasz: I'm working with Cinema, it allows you huge amount of polys and subsurface scatterings in short rendertimes. Each renderings above only took me only 4 minutes on a Pentium Dual 4,5 ghz, 3gb ram. I will improve the eye further, at this moment it doesnt work as fine as the skin, under some light condition there are some flaws, thats because it use a more simple SSS-model than the skin, maybe i'll change to a more complex SSS model. Thanks a lot!

@ Swed: thanks Cyril! Btw great job on the vehicle texturing, i'll write something to it later!

@ simovici: thanks a lot! As i said to Andrei i will improve the eyes further, the shader is very "young", so...theres a lot to improve ;)

johnnymaster
11-28-2006, 12:57 AM
@ alvin: thanks! And yeah thats right, i've improved the textures and SSS, but these pics were rendered without the oily layer on the skin, because this would increase the rendertime 15x, too much for a fast preview ;)

beautiful model :applause: .. are u planning to animate water.. could it be done?

AndreiSzasz
11-29-2006, 11:12 AM
hey ! me again :D
i saw you said to cyril that the stone is not a place with dirt ... do you think my rusty buildings and stuf from the 6th chamber are to rusty?
i see this 6th chamber as an old chamber with mechanical things... it sais in the book that only some pomps are still moveing and the rest is some abandoned mechanisms... so i gues they are standing there for a long time, so they could be verry rusty since they are not doing anything for a long long time...
what you think?

johnnymaster
11-29-2006, 11:45 AM
Hey Andrei!

this is a point of view, it's the different ways of interpretations i think. I really like your look of the 6th chamber, the rusty look is really special and authentic. I go a different way, where i think, that the technologies of the stoners are more advanced, so rust doesnt play a role on my environment design. I want to show the different technologies between the human vehicles and the environment of the stoners. I'm thinking on some plants and vines which are growing over the hundred years and covered some parts of chamber, it's more an abstract machine world. But thats my version, i don't think that you've made something wrong, your chamber really has a special look, i also want a special look, just on a different way ;)

AndreiSzasz
11-29-2006, 11:57 AM
ok :D
i thougt that it was all about diferent perspectives , but i was't realy sure...
i thought i misunderstand something in the book.. so thanks for clearfing me
and..cool concept, i like the way your scene is devoloping  good luck ,
and whaiting to see more :bounce::bounce::bounce:

johnnymaster
11-29-2006, 12:52 PM
oh i forgot the other postings:blush:

@ icedeyes: hahaha thanks a lot ;)

@ taavi: not yet i think ;) Btw i've change some subtle things already to make her little less Milla, to suits the Patricia character better, don't want that the real Milla sue me because her digital double is maybe too ugly to her:D

@ Leothril: yeah, maybe i'll animate some water and rain effects, if my time and PC power allows that, but the water on the face is not going to flow, it's too complex and the time is short you know ;)

@ Andrei: yup, i will begin with the work on the environment this weekend, just to have the base modeling on each category, with this i feel better and saver:D

hello everybody!

quick update, as you can see - a cloth simulation test. Its on a very early stage, so there are some little clipping flaws. I'm going to add seems, little micro wrinkles, zips and pockets etc. later. The Patrica character is fully rigged and animatable. The materials are - of course - not the final ones, just simple phong.

hehe, i called you insane after the previous post, and now everybody says the same

i was thinking you were going to model the clothes, but no, you're using simulation! I'd say it's a great start. Are you going to use the simulated one as a model to do some refinements upon, or will you just use it like you'll get it?
And is it done in cinema or XSI ?

i hope i'll finish the patricia body soon so i can start on the clothing as well. I just have to do the feet (not too detailed) and rearange the loops and polys on the back.
untill your next update man

Very nice... just one question... how do you avoid getting the cloth passing through the body geometry?.. The only way i managed to do that so far is either by inresing the resolution of the mesh to insane levels of bu increasing the cloth tolerance (or push depending on what program you are using)... I would really like to know your technique... especially how it works when the arm has to come in contact with the rest of the body...

@ krrrk: hehee, thanks, I'll try to keep the detail level!

@ Intervain: thanks;) "nuts" - "insane" - "crazy" "too much time" - my CG mates are really nice to me:twisted:

@ Nico: heyho, for the clothes i'm using cinema, pretty fast and precise, I'll do some refinements later, now i'm on the boots. You'll get a mail later!

cheers!

@ Jedi: hey mate, don't worry, she would win a wet-shirt-contest! I'm working hard especially on this part:twisted:

@ icedeyes: thanks! Firstly, there isnt any animation in my scene, secondly, the simulation setup is very high to achieve precise results, in addition the clothes has a high poly amount 40.000 - 80.000 polys to avoid clippings and to allow detailed wrinkles.

Hey Linh. Those machines with shaders look AWESOME! :buttrock:

However, I must confess that the water effect is not working for me. It looks good on Patricia, but not for these. It almost looks like draped plastic wrap hanging down from the machines. IMO, the machines look a lot better without the water effect. I don't know, but have you considered going without the water effect for your scene? You might want to think about that. Perhaps it would help you finish this one on time.

As for me, I might not be able to work on my EON entry anytime soon. Some work has come up to fill my schedule. I hope to continue with this as soon as possible or else I will just have to drop out.

hello everybody,

some improvement on the skin and its lighting. I added GI and Ambient occlusion and did some tweaks on the subsurface scattering. Theres also some improvement on the water shader and the micro hairs on the skin surface. Rendered out in a lot of passes, you can see few passes above.

Hey Linh. Superb work on the skin and lighting work!

My only crit right now is that the displacements on the lips look a bit too strong. It probably wouldn't matter in the final image since most likely you are not going to have her face this close.

Also, I would have liked to see a bigger version of the comped image rather than the desaturated one. Maybe later? :)

yeah, the lips........but i have already figure out a technique to solve this problem, on the next update, the skin of the lips will be really translucently and the light will pass through the lips-skin on the flesh part of the lips, at this moment looks a bit too solid.

And sorry, the black and white is only a blow up, next time maybe i will post a bigger render, but more than 1,5h for a preview is a bit too long you know;)

ok I just went trough 17 pages of your progress, and I had to shout a few times in amazement, your skill and attention to detail is incredible. The details are amazing, but I'm missing the vehicle in your concept sketch, and I'm missing the big picture of how you will compose all these things together.

I also love the rain effect, I am only hoping that you will have enough time to finish your work at this amazing level. Best of luck to you.

Nice work! I'll be following your progress closely. The resemblence of your female is uncanny and I must say that the water displacement is really well done! I do think you don't have to cut up the uv's like you do, unless you are texturing in Z or Deeppaint or anything like that ofcourse... In any case, you work hard and it shows, wish I had the time to participate, maybe I should just quit my job for a few months and finish all the personal stuff I've got lined up. Thanks for the inspiration, motivation, smashing work man!

some vehicle stuff - there are a lot more to show, but wait til next week when i get new RAM. The hardest thing to render are the 10 mio. dirt n dust particles on the surfaces, these dirts arent just shaders, but really volumetric.

here you go! Some new stuff - in fact, not really new, the process is much more advanced right now, but i have to wait for my new hardware to render these things out, at this moment its impossible to render these things out on my current hardware.
The whole chamber is modeled out completely. My decision was against the using of a landscape generator like Terragen or Vue, because the chambers of eon are very special - cylindrical and artificial, in addition i'm a control freak;) Next time you are going to see the "machine city", with lot of smoke, dark clouds, rain and lightnings. This time you only see the ground and some highways.

In addition i have created a particle system which is freezed, because on the video everything is freezed, so there are no animations at all, except of the camera movement. The particle are created for extremely fast rendertimes, because later there lots of particle effects.

Happy new year!

i read somewhere that win could only handle 2 gig. I even thought it was a joke, but looks like windows it the joke here. nice job jhonny .. please can u share some info about rendertimes just to have an idea :wise:

before i got myself into Eon i was working on scene with some models from scifi3d it was in the interior of one of the sets of the death star, anyway the rendertimes got up to 12 hours wit all the lightining and texturin.. im going to get more memery tommorrow hope that helps

@ leo: thanks man, about the rendertime:

each frame - 640px @ 2.35:1 - takes about 25 minutes with millions of polygons and GI on a core 2 duo 2x2,8ghz and 4gb ram. I have to throttle the gi quality down to decrease the rendertime. Good luck!

Nothingness
01-03-2007, 02:37 PM
and what about rendertime with the 64-bit version? I thought this was the rendertime on the 32-bit system?

ps. i really hate windows now, the batch render of maya can only use 2 cpu's of the 4 on the mac pro. So rendertimes for me for 1000x666 pixels take about an hour per frame. Luckily it'll increase towards the end cause it's about 105 frames for this render layer.

Definately of the most impressive entries yet...

My wife and I simply loved the detail of diret between the tires.
Even though I am not too sure on how much of it will show in the render, I am a firm believer that hard work and attention to details rarely fails in presenting a masterpiece.

Like everybody else I am simply in amazement to the amount of wrok you have put in to a finalising image.

My ONLY comment would be the amount of descriptions that simply are not according to the story... at least not as I would expect from somebody with your attention to such an amount of work.
And well this HAS been covered and you HAD stated that you saw this competition as an oppertunity to do a variaty of things, such as modeling out Mila... to be frankly honest, I think you have done a VERY good job... and I am looking forward to the rest of the developments .

...
Firstly...
Linh (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=244686) I am VERY, VERY sorry for spamming your thread for my own reply...

But I have to state that I have not said anything such in my thread...
Please take the time to better read the post Nico (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=116379).
I stated that I had problems and that it was VERY bad news, since those very shaders were most of my shaders for Thistledown.

The other person you are reffering to must be Tim (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=11197).
At the moment he is having some expectable difficulties with his texturing from fast/simple solutions

That said...
Your work is amazing and very inspiring.. even though it is a big puzzle for us to be able to put together, each and every puzzle piece has it's own attraction.

As for your textures... I know very few that have made to such quality with procedurals. I think I am an in-between man; hence I use as many file textures as procedurals.

yeah, well, i misread and formulated my statement wrongly!
sorry for that. Shi[ happens when you get disturbed during sleep.
so chear up and let's keep this challenge fun. I just don't like
agressive posts.

best to just ignore me!
call me a malfunctioning dmap if you must!

ps. Linh, are you gonna add the rain effect - the thing with the cloth - to this part too? Or do you think it would be an overkill? Depending on the way your previous object and this one comes together, it might be needed.

and sorry for the reactions (that's why i don't drink coffee) i hope i will be ignored after this.

@ Black and Nico:

no problem, keep cool, the time is short, the deadline is close - we better work:bounce:

about the rain: yeah i try to add another quicker method to the background objects, we ll see;)

:hmm: wow, your eye for detail.. very very impressive.
Haven't seen all the other threads yet, but I must say.. I'll certainly track this one.

Furthermore I've really been able to learn some things all the way through your process, thanks. Next to that, your process looks very clean, no comments on that and I'm sure you'll make the deadline!

Good luck for the latest pieces, cheers

oh, godthanks for that

i was almost gonna post it sucked

weren't ya gonna try the spherical perspective to create a super panorame?

looking at the main contruction in the front, it's alright. But then the objects look a little too misformed. Not really perspective. It might come out less obvious, but are you planning anything for that?

no not really, this distortions are natural if you are using short focus lenghts, its a must, otherwise i cant cover all the models into one shot you know...

the final scene will be covered from hundred thousands of plants, vines, dirts and stones, this is just a simple rendertest;)

Nothingness
01-31-2007, 01:59 AM
true,

but with a real lens and a short focal distance, you get more bended lines instead of sheared ones. I know it's not easy to do, and i woudn't want to try it in maya, but maybe c4d has an easy way or so.

Nevertheless, it will be awsome man.

...but without vehicle and patricia.

If Eon were to be made into a movie, actors would play the characters, and CGI would be used for the settings. I think it was a good idea on your part to focus on the setting instead of on rendering the character. The image looks very impressive. Congratulations!

AAARRRRGGGHHHHH

man, this is what you get when working too tightly to the deadline man.
Did you even got the animation finished?

You can always get it finished and post it at the 3d stills. And get it in your portfolio or so.
Would be a waste to let all the 4 months of work go to waste.

i feared for the scenario.

but great entry non the less.

Anyway, you're a great modeler/texturer, and i'll sure we will see soon that you're a great animator.

I particulary love your work on details from scratch, and this entry stay one of the best here for me.

Hey Linh. It looks like over-ambitious detail is what hurt you in the end. That's some CRAZY detail you have there! :D But no worries. I also didn't submit my entry in time. Too many problems trying to convert my .avi into .flv. The good news is that I now know what the problem was. It appears that you can't convert an uncompressed .avi into .flv. Yeah, pretty silly. Live and learn.

Anyway, great news about the job prospects. I also had a couple interested parties. Maybe something good will come from that. :) Let's wish each other good luck.

Will you be in for the next challenge? I can't guarantee that I'll be there, but I definitely will be watching. Peace! :buttrock:

johnnymaster
02-02-2007, 05:37 PM
@ swed: thanks man, and hope you are going to get something for your entry;)

@ jedi: yeah, the over-ambition was a part, another was, in the last 2 weeks i have to do a some other freelance jobs, the last days was very hard, but now i'm happy that its over.

And yeah, the convertion process was terrible, finally, i have to send the file to Vietemotion who is convert my video file to flv.

Anyway, I dont thing i'll join the next Challenge, because i hope for a studio job in the next coming months and a challenge takes a lot of time as you know.

See you later, i'm curious to see your upcoming works mate!

I think you have to step back and look from a distance first, the details are all very nice, but the complete picture is messy, chaotic and doesn't show any of the detail, since there's no real clear lighting, you need contrast to show off the detail, I also think your screen callibration is way too clear, because on my screens (studio callibrated) it pretty much shows all black.

I've been writing quite a bit of conventions these days for the next project, and your work reminds me of something I've been stressing a lot in those docs. You cannot start something by it's detail, you have to start with a global design of your set, the global lighting, the colors which you want to use, then gradually increase detail on them...

You do good work, but your approach needs to change, try beginning with color keys and blocking, then general lighting tests, etc... Work on composition and concept, make sure your lighting sells the image... keep it up!

johnnymaster

@ Intervain: thanks a lot! Yeah, your right, i've learnt a lot due the challenge, could improved a lot of things - except of my poor english;)
I have to recognize, i'm a fan of your work:wise: i will keep an eye out for new works:beer:

@ derbyQsalano: at first, thanks for taking the time to make such a nice and detailed posting. And i agree, you are definitely right. I dont need to step back to see the flaws;)

I'm absolutely not satisfied with the final pic, but the character and the vehicle is not to bad, if i would present them each apart. But of course thats not a apologize for the poor overall picture. Because i was so lazy the days before, i had to create the background in 3 days and 1 day to put it all togheter in panic and rush - that are the reasons, but i think i will take some time and re-render the models, thanks once more!

animalunae
02-15-2007, 09:28 AM
You certainly have the right attitude, the ability to see your flaws and evaluate every crit you get is a good thing in this line of work. I do agree that the character and the car look wicked, why don't you do something else with it? Try a composition with your female in the foreground and the car in the background, even further back you could use your foilage. You could also replace your objects with proxies, lowpoly simple grey shaded objects, to test lighting, get some backlighting, maybe some very saturated colours, depending on what kind of mood... In any case, I'll be looking forward to more work from you!

I'm mainly replying to subscribe to this thread.

I can't believe your level of quality in your work. I mean, the modeling the face so well is one thing, but you employ so many small details like it's no big thing. I have trouble making shaders look good.

Are you using Maya for all of this?

Also, I just wanted to say something about the latest composition where you have the girl standing in the scene: It doesnt look as good as it should. I just mean that all your wip pics look so good but when you have them all together there is a lot of loss for quality. Example: milla doesnt even look near as close to her as she did in your first progress shots. But I remember you saying that you didnt want to have photo textures, so I can understand that. Also, I am sure you know what you are doing and you're going to revise the shot WAY more. So I'll shut up.

Awesome work btw!
